JERES-W-011
Testing on production welds is performed as per Attachment 1, ASME
A1 Para.
B31.3, Para. 331.1.1, or if PWHT is applied due to service requirements.
15.2
JERES-W-011
Hardness testing for P-No 1 material production welds in sour service
A2 Para.
shall also be performed.
15.3
Hardness Measurement is taken at Weld Metal and Heat Affected Zone JERES-W-011
A3 of production welds, if specified by the applicable code. (ASME B31,3, Para.
Para, 331.1.7) 15.3
Test area is ground flush with Base metal to a smooth, flat surface.
B1 NOTE: Scaled or discolored areas are unacceptable. (NACE RP0472,
Appendix A, 1)
Test bar is inserted into holder, with the spacing buttonin the extreme
B2
forward position. (NACE RP0472, Appendix A2)
B3 The test block is flat on the test surface. (NACE RP0472, Appendix A, 3)
Make impression by striking the anvil nut squarely with a 1.4kg - 2.3kg
B4 (3.0lb - 5.0lb) hammer. Pull the hammer away so it does not rebound or
restrike the anvil. (NACE RP0472, Appendix A, 4)
Measuring on the weld test site by placing the microscope such that the
impression is approx. in center of scale. Adjust eyepiece such that scale
B5
and top of impression are in sharp focus. (NACE RP0472, Appendix A,
5)

Rotate eyepiece 90° and take second reading. If the two readings vary
B7 > 0.10mm, discard specimen and redo. If acceptable, average the two
readings for the recorded result. (NACE RP0472, Appendix A, 5)
Repeat the procedure in Item No. B4, to measure the impression on the
B8
test bar. (NACE RP0472, Appendix A, 6)
For subsquent testing, move spacing button toward the rear. This
ensures that the impressions on the test bar are properly spaced and
B9 avoids double impressions. Continue this practice for succeding
impressions until 1/2 of one side of the bar, and again move the spacing
button to the extreme front position. (NACE RP0472, Appendix A, 7)
Subtract the determined weld hardness from the test bar hardness. This
should be -10 to +50. If not, discard specimen and retest with a new test
B11 bar. The new test bar should have a hardness closer to the weld
hardness to improve the reading accuracy. (NACE RP0472, Appendix A,
8)
All Brinell impressions at one test location should have at lest 6.4mm
B12
(0.25") between their nearest edges. (NACE RP0472, Appendix A, 10)
Hardness impression can be made on only two adjacent side of the test
B13
bars. (NACE RP0472, Appendix A, 11)
Two additional welds from the same lot are tested if any welds are found JERES-W-011
B16 to be unacceptable. If the result showed more than one weld in a lot is Para.
found to be unacceptable, then all welds in that lot shall be tested. 15.5
C Evalution of Test
JERES-W-011
The maximum allowed hardness for P-No 1 material production welds in
C1 Para.
sour service is 200 BHN.
