NTWK Project Student

This document contains two networking scenarios describing home and office networks. Scenario 1 describes a home network with multiple devices including laptops, tablets, and phones connected via a wireless access point. Scenario 2 describes a small office network with 11 wired workstations connected to a switch, which is then connected to a router providing internet access via an ISP. The document provides tasks for drawing network diagrams, determining network types and addressing, and investigating network properties and connectivity.

ASSIGNMENT NTWK1007 JANUARY 2022

SCENARIO 1: A wireless network

You are at home online connected to the Server that hosts UTT’s CANVAS
Programme. You are viewing your NTWK1007 notes online via your laptop.
There are also two other people online at your home; one person uses a laptop and the
other is on a Tablet. Your phone and the other people’s phones are connected to the
network.

1. Draw a diagram to depict this small network showing all the devices in the Scenario,
and include in this diagram, the Access Point, the ISP and UTT’s Server.
(For the diagram, use a software of your choice)

2. i. Generally, what type of Network Architecture is depicted?

ii. What is the common name given to this home Network?

3. In your command prompt, use the command to display your IP address, subnetmask,
and default gateway. [Include a snip or snapshot]

4. Use logical ANDing to find the network you are on, and hence state the class of the
network.

5. What is the IP address and mac-address of your phone?

6. Draw a table and insert the IP address and subnet mask for your laptop and phone.
Include possible IP addresses and subnet masks for all other devices on the home
network. Include the gateway for each.

7. How do these devices obtain their IP addresses?

8.i. Use the appropriate command to get an output that shows IP addresses and
Associated mac-addresses. [Include a snip or snapshot.]

ii. Under the type column, what does dynamic and static suggest?

9.i Use the appropriate command to display all active connections on your computer.

ii. What is the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of your computer?

10. Investigate if the Server at utt.edu.tt is up and running. Show the output of your
findings and highlight or list the ip address of this server.

11. Take a snapshot of the output that depicts the number of hops from your computer to
utt.edu.tt.

ASSIGNMENT NTWK1007 JANUARY 2022

SCENARIO 2: A wired network.

A small office consists of eleven (11) workers and each has her/his own workstation, and
they are all connected to the same switch via Ethernet cables. There is a DHCP Server
which allocates IP addresses to these workstations using Class A addresses. They all
share one printer. Common office applications are configured on all workstations and
they share files amongst themselves. This switch is connected to the port of a Router
which affords access to the internet via an Internet Service Provider (ISP).

1.a. Draw a diagram to depict this network, and assign ip addresses to the computers.

b. On your diagram, indicate broadcast domain and collision domain.

2. a. What type of media (cables etc.) will you choose for this network? And, give reasons
for your choice.

b. At what layer of the OSI model will we put cables? Name a protocol at this layer.

c. A worker is typing a word document. At what layer of the OSI model does this program
reside? Name a protocol at this layer.

3. State what type of IP address would be assigned to the printer and why?

4. What is the name of the database a switch builds and how does it go about doing this?

5. If one computer wants to send a file to another with another, how does the switch handle
this?

6. Someone at the office types “www.amazon.com” into their browser. Explain how this
web address is processed to allow communication.
