The Warhammer Vault exists to preserve the rich
lore and background of Warhammer 40,000 and
Warhammer Age of Sigmar. As such, outdated game
scenarios and unit rules have been removed from this
publication.

From the maelstrom of a sundered world, the Eight Realms

were born. The formless and the divine exploded into life.
Strange, new worlds appeared in the firmament, each one
gilded with spirits, gods and men. Noblest of the gods was
Sigmar. For years beyond reckoning he illuminated the
realms, wreathed in light and majesty as he carved out his
reign. His strength was the power of thunder. His wisdom
was infinite. Mortal and immortal alike kneeled before his
lofty throne. Great empires rose and, for a while, treachery
was banished. Sigmar claimed the land and sky as his own
and ruled over a glorious age of myth.

But cruelty is tenacious. As had been foreseen, the great

alliance of gods and men tore itself apart. Myth and legend
crumbled into Chaos. Darkness flooded the realms. Torture,
slavery and fear replaced the glory that came before. Sigmar
turned his back on the mortal kingdoms, disgusted by their
fate. He fixed his gaze instead on the remains of the world he
had lost long ago, brooding over its charred core, searching
endlessly for a sign of hope. And then, in the dark heat of
his rage, he caught a glimpse of something magnificent. He
pictured a weapon born of the heavens. A beacon powerful
enough to pierce the endless night. An army hewn from
everything he had lost. Sigmar set his artisans to work and
for long ages they toiled, striving to harness the power of the
stars. As Sigmar’s great work neared completion, he turned
back to the realms and saw that the dominion of Chaos was
almost complete. The hour for vengeance had come. Finally,
with lightning blazing across his brow, he stepped forth to
unleash his creation.

The Age of Sigmar had begun.

HAMMERS
OF SIGMAR
The Hammers of Sigmar are the Firstforged, the
heroes amid the tempest – a vengeful Stormhost
whose war against Chaos is just beginning.

Faces stern behind their golden masks, the Hammers of

Sigmar strike from the heavens with bold determination.
They are valiant heroes to a man, reforged upon Sigmar’s
own anvil into beings of incredible power. The wrath of the
storm surges like lightning through their veins. Its energies
transport them into battle, and lend thunderbolt fury to every
swing as they strike down their foes in Sigmar’s name.

The Hammers of Sigmar are lent strength – as are all

Stormcast – by their hatred of the Chaos Gods and their
vile followers. Each of these courageous Stormcast Eternals
was snatched from the fury of battle by their God-King, but
not before they had seen their tribes slain and their lands
despoiled by the horrific influence of the Dark Gods. Granted
might, fortitude and immortality by Sigmar, the Hammers
now have a chance to exact revenge for the horrors inflicted
upon them – and they intend to make the most of it.

The heraldic designs borne by the warriors of the Stormhosts

are bold and glorious – visual proclamations of the Stormcast
Eternals’ martial might and celestial nobility. Warriors from
Stormhosts of the First Striking display the lightning bolts
of Sigmar’s storm and a hammer device upon their shields,
shoulder guards and the like. Several meanings are attached
to this iconography; the hammer can be said to stand for both
the Stormcast Eternals and for Ghal Maraz, the hammer of
Sigmar himself. The lightning bolt, by comparison, evokes
Sigmar’s Tempest as it brings sudden destruction from the
sky. The Hammers of Sigmar go to war clad in the gleaming
gold of sigmarite set against the sky blue of Azyr.

From its sculpted base to the halo-tips of its reliquary,
this model is wreathed in impressive detail. However,
contrasting the heroic aesthetic of the Stormcast Eternals,
Ionus Cryptborn is redolent with menacing, morbid
imagery. His skull helm hints at his abyssal heritage, yet
it is the reliquary that he bears aloft that truly evokes
the macabre. This skeletal relic clutches an ancient
blade of mysterious origin, and is hung with skulls and
runic parchment.

THE GORETIDE
Chanting, gnashing, bellowing, the lunatic warriors of the Goretide flow across the land like an
onrushing tidal wave. No mere army this, the Goretide is an entire nation of murderers, a savage

18
To this end, Khul pushes his Goretide
ever harder to win glory in Khorne’s
name. Korghos’ natural inclination is
towards fair and open combat, but he
has been forced to compromise his
twisted code of honour in his pursuit
of glory. Once the Goretide numbered
only the elite amongst its ranks, hosts
of Blood Warriors marching beneath
the hellish icon borne by Threx
Skullbrand. However, when faced by
the tribal masses of the Halkafane,
Khul knew that he required vast
numbers of his own. So did he make
common cause, albeit distastefully,
with the teeming, cannibal hordes of
the Bloodreavers. Later, Khul found
his conquests slowed by the elusive
and resilient smoke walker tribes of
the Blazing Steppes. Rather than allow
his strange foes to wear his armies
down, Khul enlisted the aid of Vekh the
Flayer, whose Khorgoraths smashed the
smoke walker lines asunder.

Now, the much-enlarged Goretide

stands triumphant over vast swathes
of Aqshy, and Khul nears the end of
his path to glory. Yet still ascension
eludes him, and Khul cannot shake the
gnawing suspicion that, in choosing
victory at any cost over a glorious
death in battle, he may have actually
undermined his own cause. Certainly,
the Realm of Fire has become a poor
hunting ground of late, only a handful
of paltry mortal tribes remaining to
oppose the Goretide’s advance. It is
no surprise, then, that Khul and the
Goretide welcome the onset of the
Stormcast Eternals. At last, they face a
true challenge once more, and a skull-
harvest that Khorne himself would
consider worthy.

 ORGHAK'S
SLAUGHTERMEN
The Blood Warrior models are
arguably the most warlike and
savage-looking miniatures in
this collection. Mouths yawning
wide and faces twisted into
bellows of rage, the fury of these
Khornate warriors is evident. The
macabre iconography of Khorne is
prominent in every aspect of the
Blood Warriors, from the Khornate
runes worked into the crests of
their helms and emblazoned upon
their breastplates, to the fanged
bone of the Chaos Champion’s axe.
This model is of especial note, for in
addition to his triumphal pose and
detailed armour, he has a gaping
maw in his chest. This grotesque
detail really marks the model out as
a favoured servant of Khorne.

26
THE CRIMSONFANG &
SKULLRIPPER TRIBES
The Bloodreaver models clearly evoke
the barbarian savagery of Aqshy’s
people corrupted by the fell influence
of Chaos. Their armament of axes and
short stabbing blades demonstrates
their frenzied desire for the brutality
of close combat. The sheer physicality
of these models suggests great strength
and resilience, giving the impression
that just a single Bloodreaver, even
with his scant armour, would be more
than a match for any mere mortal
man. With their horned helms, flowing
topknots and severed head trophies, the
Bloodreavers are clearly devotees of the
Blood God. Though not individually
as large as the Blood Warriors, when
massed upon the tabletop these
charging, howling madmen make for
an impressive and daunting sight.
