How It Feels To Be Colored Me

Zora Hurston shares her experiences growing up as a black person in the United States. She discusses living in the all-black town of Eatonville, where race was not an issue, and then moving to Jacksonville, where she transformed into "just a little black girl." Hurston also reflects on how racism affects both black and white people. She describes instances where she did not feel defined by her race and how she responds when facing discrimination with astonishment rather than anger.
