The tomb of Humayun, the second Mughal emperor, was built between 1526
and 1571 by the Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyuath under the instructions of
Humayun's grieving widow, Hamida Banu Ghiyuath Begum. The oldest garden-
tomb in the Indian sub-continent, is the first example of the Persian influence on
Indian architecture. It houses more than 1000 graves, which has led to it being
called 'the dormitory of the Mughals'. It houses the tombs of the Mughal
emperors. Jahandar Shah and Farrukh Siyar, and also of Darah Sikoh,
Shahjahan's mudered son. The tomb is a protected monument, which means
that defacing it in any way would cost you Rs. 5000 or three months in prison. It
is on the World Heritage List, and recognized internationally as a monument that
deserves protection for the benefit of all humanity. A massive restoration
process was carried out over four years to ensure that the maintenance of the
tomb met international standards. Between the years 2000 and 2003, the Aga
Khan Trust for Culture, in collaboration with the Archaeological Survey of India,
carried out a project to revitalise the 30-acre garden and monument itself. The
