introduction

CONVENTIONAL ENERGY SOURCES:

Conventional energy sources such as natural gas, oil, coal, or

nuclear are finite but still hold the majority of the energy
market. However, renewable energy sources like wind, fuel
cells, solar, biogas/biomass, tidal, geothermal, etc.

RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES:

Renewable energy is energy that comes from a source that

won't run out. They are natural and self-replenishing, and
usually have a low- or zero-carbon footprint. Examples of
renewable energy sources include wind power, solar power,
bioenergy (organic matter burned as a fuel) and hydroelectric,
including tidal energy.
ENERGY PRODUCED IN INDIA

RENEWABLE ENERGY ZONES IN INDIA

Potential renewable energy zones (66.5 GW – Solar 50 GW and Wind 16.5 GW) have been
identified in the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra,
Rajasthan & Madhya Pradesh and a comprehensive transmission scheme was evolved
integrating these renewable energy zones.

CONVENTIONAL ENERGY ZONES IN INDIA

The total oil production in India was 0.3 million tons in 1950-51, which increased up to 32.4
million tons in 2000-01. It is mainly found in Assam, Gujarat and Mumbai. As of 31 October
2023, the installed capacity is 425535.52 MW. Gujarat (48.6 GW) leads in power
generation capacity, followed by Maharashtra (44.8 GW) and Tamil Nadu (38.2 GW), though
Rajasthan leads in renewable energy capacity.
COMAPARING THE INDIAN & INTERNATIONAL
ENERGY SOURCES
ENERGY SOURCES IN INDIA

• How many sources of energy are there in India?

Over 80%of India's energy needs are met by three fuels: coal, oil and solid
biomass. Coal has underpinned the expansion of electricity generation and
industry, and remains the largest single fuel in the energy mix.

• What is the maximum source of energy in India?

Thermal power is the "largest" source of power in India. There are different
types of thermal power plants based on the fuel used to generate the steam
such as coal, gas, and Diesel, natural gas. About 71% of electricity consumed
in India is generated by thermal power plants.

• What is the total power generation in India 2023?

Performance of Electricity Generation (Including RE). The electricity generation

target (Including RE) for the year 2023-24 has been fixed as 1750 Billion
Unit (BU). i.e. growth of around 7.2% over actual generation of 1624.158 BU for
the previous year (2022-23).

• What is the second largest source of energy in India?

Petroleum or crude oil is used for generating electricity and other purposes
also. India is the third-largest consumer of crude oil in the world and it
accounts for 29.55% of the total energy produced in India making it the
second-largest source of electricity generation in India.

ENERGY SOURCES IN INTERNATIONAL

• Between 1971 and 2019 world total energy supply (TES) increased 2.6 times
(from 230 EJ to 606 EJ) and its structure changed markedly. Oil fell from 44%
to 31% of TES between 1971 and 2010; its share has held steady since then
and it remains the most important fuel in 2019.

• How many energy sources are there in the world?

Primary energy sources take many forms, including nuclear energy, fossil
energy -- like oil, coal and natural gas -- and renewable sources like wind, solar,
geothermal and hydropower.

• What is the world's main source of energy?

Oil is the world's largest energy source today. It is the dominant source of
energy for the transport sector in particular. This interactive map shows the
share of primary energy that comes from oil across the world.

• What is 80 of the world's energy?

Fossil fuels

Fossil fuels—including coal, oil, and natural gas—have been powering

economies for over 150 years, and currently supply about 80 percent of the
world's energy. Fossil fuels formed millions of years ago from the carbon-rich
remains of animals and plants, as they decomposed and were compressed and
heated underground.

CURRENT SCENARIO OF ENERGY PRODUCTION & HOW

MUCH IS UTILIZED

 What is the production and consumption of energy in India?

During the fiscal year (FY) 2022–23, the total electricity generation in the
country was 1,844 TWh, of which 1,618 TWh was generated by utilities. The
gross electricity consumption per capita in FY2023 was 1,327 kWh.
 What is the current energy scenario of India?
India ranks 6th globally in hydropower generation during the year 2019. India
has 136 GW (38%) installed capacity of renewable energy. It is one of the
world leaders in renewable energy investments and installations. India has set
a target of 175 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity by 2022.

 What percentage of energy is used in India?

Coal is the country's top energy source with a share of 46% in 2022, followed
by oil (24%) and biomass (21%). Natural gas covers 5% and primary
electricity (hydro, nuclear, solar, and wind) 4%.
 Which energy is mostly used in India?
Thermal power is the "largest" source of power in India. There are different
types of thermal power plants based on the fuel used to generate the steam
such as coal, gas, and Diesel, natural gas. About 71% of electricity consumed in
India is generated by thermal power plants.
 Why is India's energy consumption so high?
A recent report by BMI Research said India's power demand would grow by
70% by 2032 on account of rising urbanization and increased demand from
the construction, manufacturing and services sectors. While the share of
renewables will increase, coal will continue to command the lion's share of
power generation in India.
