INTRODUCTION OF
CONVENTIONAL & RENEWABLE
ENERGY SOURCE
Potential renewable energy zones (66.5 GW – Solar 50 GW and Wind 16.5 GW) have been
identified in the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra,
Rajasthan & Madhya Pradesh and a comprehensive transmission scheme was evolved
integrating these renewable energy zones.
The total oil production in India was 0.3 million tons in 1950-51, which increased up to 32.4
million tons in 2000-01. It is mainly found in Assam, Gujarat and Mumbai. As of 31 October
2023, the installed capacity is 425535.52 MW. Gujarat (48.6 GW) leads in power
generation capacity, followed by Maharashtra (44.8 GW) and Tamil Nadu (38.2 GW), though
Rajasthan leads in renewable energy capacity.
COMAPARING THE INDIAN & INTERNATIONAL
ENERGY SOURCES
ENERGY SOURCES IN INDIA
Over 80%of India's energy needs are met by three fuels: coal, oil and solid
biomass. Coal has underpinned the expansion of electricity generation and
industry, and remains the largest single fuel in the energy mix.
Thermal power is the "largest" source of power in India. There are different
types of thermal power plants based on the fuel used to generate the steam
such as coal, gas, and Diesel, natural gas. About 71% of electricity consumed
in India is generated by thermal power plants.
Petroleum or crude oil is used for generating electricity and other purposes
also. India is the third-largest consumer of crude oil in the world and it
accounts for 29.55% of the total energy produced in India making it the
second-largest source of electricity generation in India.
• Between 1971 and 2019 world total energy supply (TES) increased 2.6 times
(from 230 EJ to 606 EJ) and its structure changed markedly. Oil fell from 44%
to 31% of TES between 1971 and 2010; its share has held steady since then
and it remains the most important fuel in 2019.
Oil is the world's largest energy source today. It is the dominant source of
energy for the transport sector in particular. This interactive map shows the
share of primary energy that comes from oil across the world.
Fossil fuels
During the fiscal year (FY) 2022–23, the total electricity generation in the
country was 1,844 TWh, of which 1,618 TWh was generated by utilities. The
gross electricity consumption per capita in FY2023 was 1,327 kWh.
What is the current energy scenario of India?
India ranks 6th globally in hydropower generation during the year 2019. India
has 136 GW (38%) installed capacity of renewable energy. It is one of the
world leaders in renewable energy investments and installations. India has set
a target of 175 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity by 2022.
