1.0 Calculation Basis

1.1 Methodology

Cables are sized based on the following considerations:

a) Current carrying capacity - the ability of the cable to continuously support the expected full load
current, in the specified installation conditions.

b) Voltage drop - during steady state and transient conditions, the voltage drop across the cable
shall not exceed the limits as detailed here.

Steady state (full load) 5 %

Motor starting 15 %
Feeders to MCCs 2 %
Feeders to distribution boards 2 %
DB to lighting fixture 3 %
DB to Other uses 5 %

Three phase voltage drop can be approximated by the following, based on the load power factor:

3  I  L  (Rc cos  + X c sin  )

Vd 3 =
1000 x n

Single phase voltage drop permited on the circuit run is calculated using the following equation:

2 . I  L  (Rc cos + X c sin)

Vd1 =
1000x n

where Vd3Ф is three phase voltage drop (V)

I is full load current (A)
Is Motor Starting Current (A)
L is cable length (m)
R is ac cable resistance (Ω/km)
X is ac cable reactance at 50Hz (Ω/km)
cosФ is load power factor
n Number of Cables in Parallel
Vd1Ф is single phase voltage drop (V)

c) Short circuit temperature rise - the ability of the cable to withstand the adiabatic temperature
rise during the worst case prospective short circuit condition.

The minimum conductor size is calculated by:

I 2t
S =
k

where S is minimum conductor size (mm2)

I is maximum prospective fault current (A rms)
t is operating time for the protective device (s)
k is a constant derived in IEC 60364-5-54 Annex A for copper conductors as:

  f −i 
k = 226 ln  1 + 
 234 .5 +  i 

where θi is the initial temperature of the conductor (°C)

θf is the final temperature of the conductor (°C)

1.2 Assumptions

1.2.1 LV Cable Types

The low voltage cable types are based on Cable Specifications

The main features are summarised below:

Cable construction Cu/XLPE/PVC, Cu/XLPE/SWA/PVC

Voltage grade 0.6/1kV
Operating temperature 90 °C (maximum)
Final conductor temperature 250 °C
Temperature rise constant, k 143

1.2.1.1 Cable Parameters

The following sources are used for cable data:

IEC-60364-5-52 Table B.52.12

1.2.1.2 Installation Conditions

The following installation conditions are assumed for all LV cables:

Ground temperature 15°C

Installation method Cables installed touching, in the ground
Grouping Maximum grouping is 6 cables on a single layer (MultiCore)
Soil thermal resistivity 1.2 K m/W
Dept of laying 0.5m

Correction factors for MultiCore cables are as follows:

Ground temperature 1.0

Grouping 0.55
Depth of laying 1.0
Soil thermal resistivity 0.99
Overall correction factor 0.54

Correction factors for SingleCore cables are as follows:

Ground temperature 1
Grouping 0.56
Depth of laying 1.0
Soil thermal resistivity 0.99
Overall correction factor 0.55

1.2.1.3 Feeder Load Data

AC feeder loads are based on the maximum rating of the protection device (MCCB or
MCB). The power factor is assumed to be 0.85 lagging for all AC feeder loads.

Page: 5/27

1.2.1.4 Circuit Protection

Circuit protection shall be either via moulded case circuit breakers (MCCB), miniature circuit
breakers (MCB) or fuses. It is assumed that for MCCB's and MCB's:

- the instantaneous disconnection time is 0.001s

- at a disconnection time of 0.2s, the minimum trip current is 7.5 x rated current.
- at a disconnection time of 5s, the minimum trip current is 5 x rated current.

And for the fuses:

- the instantaneous disconnection time is 0.001s

1.2.1.5 Earth Conductors

The cable earth conductor shall be:

2
- 100% of the current carrying conductor for all cables ≤ 16 mm
2 2
- 50% of the current carrying conductor (but not less than 16 mm ) for cables > 16 mm

1.2.1.6 Short Circuit Temperature Rise

The short circuit temperature rise considerations are based on a fault occurring at the source end
of the cable (after the protective device).

The maximum short circuit current is based on the upstream MCC fault rating. While this is
somewhat conservative, the cable is consequently sized for any future work that may increase the
prospective fault level up to the switchgear fault rating.

1.2.1.7 Short Circuit Fault Level

Prospective fault level is as shown in each calculation sheet.

Cable type : 0.6/1kV 3C, Cu/XLPE/SWA/PVC

Source : New 415VAC MCC @ Control Building

Destination : New 3kW Industrial Socket @ Oil Metering Shed

15.2 Load Data

Load type Incomer Cable Length : 167 ft
Load voltage VL : 415 V Cable Length : 50.90 m
Load VA : 4.70 kVA
Breaker Rating (Full Load Current IL x 1.25) IB : 8 Amp
Power factor cosФ : 0.85
Max volt drop V : 2 %
15.3 Current Carrying Capacity
Installation method : Buried
Ambient temperature 40
Installation correction factor Ci : 0.79
Ambient temperature correction factor Ct : 0.94
Overall correction factor C = Ci x Ct : 0.74
Required current rating Ic = IB / C : 11.0019 A
Minimum cable size (for current rating) : 3 of 4 mm2
Cable current rating : 42 A

Is the cable current carrying capacity greater than the required current carrying capacity: YES

15.4 Steady State Voltage Drop

Cable run length L : 50.90 m
Selected cable size (for voltage drop) : 3 of 4 mm2
Cable resistance Rc : 5.88 Ω/km Refer Appendix 2 (90°C)
Cable reactance Xc : 0.093 Ω/km Refer Appendix 2 (XLPE)

three phase voltage drop Vd3Ф : 3.56 V ( 0.86 % nominal voltage )

3  I  L  (Rc cos + X c sin  )

Vd 3 =
1000
Is the steady state volt drop less than that required by the Project/Client specification: YES
15.5 Short Circuit Temperature Rise
Protective device : Circuit Breaker
Prospective short circuit level on the feeder Isc : 65 kA
Protective device opening time t : 0.0001 s
Adiabatic temperature rise constant k : 143

Minimum cable size (for short circuit temperature rise) I 2t = 4.55 mm2
S =
k

OR Therefore the minimum required cable size is : 6 mm2

15.7 Conclusion
The minimum core size selected is 3C of 6 mm2 .

The minimum earth core size required is 1C of 6 mm2 .
