1.1 Methodology
a) Current carrying capacity - the ability of the cable to continuously support the expected full load
current, in the specified installation conditions.
b) Voltage drop - during steady state and transient conditions, the voltage drop across the cable
shall not exceed the limits as detailed here.
Three phase voltage drop can be approximated by the following, based on the load power factor:
Single phase voltage drop permited on the circuit run is calculated using the following equation:
c) Short circuit temperature rise - the ability of the cable to withstand the adiabatic temperature
rise during the worst case prospective short circuit condition.

1.2 Assumptions
Ground temperature 1
Grouping 0.56
Depth of laying 1.0
Soil thermal resistivity 0.99
Overall correction factor 0.55
AC feeder loads are based on the maximum rating of the protection device (MCCB or
MCB). The power factor is assumed to be 0.85 lagging for all AC feeder loads.

Circuit protection shall be either via moulded case circuit breakers (MCCB), miniature circuit
breakers (MCB) or fuses. It is assumed that for MCCB's and MCB's:
The short circuit temperature rise considerations are based on a fault occurring at the source end
of the cable (after the protective device).
The maximum short circuit current is based on the upstream MCC fault rating. While this is
somewhat conservative, the cable is consequently sized for any future work that may increase the
prospective fault level up to the switchgear fault rating.
