COATut 2

This document contains a tutorial on performance evaluation of computer systems. It discusses calculating execution time of programs, comparing performance of different processors in million instructions per second (MIPS), calculating average cycles per instruction (CPI) for programs with different instruction types, calculating total power consumption of computer components using different voltages, and estimating monthly electricity costs based on power consumption of a monitor, CPU and other hardware. Techniques to increase computer speed and reduce power consumption are also discussed.

Tutorial-2
Topic: Performance Evaluation of Computer Systems

1. Suppose a computer system executes a program of 10,000 instructions using clock frequency 2
GHz and a CPI (cycles per instructions) of 2. Find the execution time of the program in pico
seconds. We are trying to reduce the execution time by 30% but this leads to an increase of 20%
in the CPI. What clock rate should we have to get this time reduction? Suggest some techniques
to increase speed of your computer system.

2. Consider two different processors P1, and P2 executing the same instruction set. P1 has a 3 GHz
clock rate and a CPI of 1.5 and P2 has 4.0 GHz clock rate and has a CPI of 2.5.
a. Which processor has better performance expressed in MIPS (Million Instructions per
Second)?
b. If both the processors are required to execute a program of 10,000 instructions in 10 micro
seconds, find their CPIs.

3. A computer processor uses clock period of 0.5 ns and executes 1000 instructions program of
specifications given in the table:-

Instruction Type Number of Instructions CPI

Arithmetic 400 4
Logical 300 2
Branch 200 3
Load and Save 100 6

Find the average CPI and execution time of the processor.

4. Mother board of a computer system works at DC power supply of 12 V, processor uses 3.3 V and
USB ports/CPU fan requires 5 V. If all these components uses average current of 2 amp.
Calculate the total power consumptions in kWh/day and units/day. Suggest some techniques to
reduce power consumption of your computer system.

5. Suppose your computer monitor consumes 60 watt per hour, CPU consumes 80 watt per hour
and all other hardware components consumes total of 40 watt per hour. How much amount you
have to pay monthly @ Rs 6 per unit.
