I. Introduction

Online communities of learning have revolutionized the way people acquire knowledge and skills. These
communities leverage the power of the internet to connect individuals with shared interests or learning goals, providing
them with a platform to collaborate, exchange ideas, and access valuable resources. In this module, we will explore various
online communities of learning, including social media platforms and online resources, to help you better understand their
potential for education and personal development.

II. Content/Body

Language Learning Communities

Livemocha -The site offers free language lessons, opportunities to chat with native speakers and other helpful
resources.
Busuu - Language learners who join this free language community can practice their skills with other people around
the world. Busuu also provides interactive lessons for learning English, Spanish, German, French and Italian.
My Happy Planet - My Happy Planet is a user-driven community that makes it easy to find a language learning
partner. Members are also encouraged to upload videos and post their own language and culture lessons.

Green and Civic Learning Communities

MakeMeSustainable - MakeMeSustainable is a community of people who are concerned about their environmental
impact. Community members can calculate their carbon footprint and learn how to take action to reduce it.
SocialVibe - This social community has helped to raise nearly $1 million for various causes. Community members
can choose the cause they are passionate about and then help spread the word through Myspace, Facebook,
Twitter, WordPress, Blogger, and other social media properties.
Change.org - This online learning community raises awareness about important causes and encourages members
to participate through petitions and other actions.

Scientific and Academic Learning Communities

ResearchGate- Is the professional network for scientists and researchers. It helps researchers connect and make it
easy for them to share and access scientific output, knowledge, and expertise. It was founded in 2008 by Ijad
Madisch is a German virologist, founder, and CEO of the research network ResearchGate. But take note that
ResearchGate is not a publisher and does not accept articles or papers for publication. Rather, members can track
their publications, store private copies, and make their published or unpublished work publicly available on
ResearchGate - if they have the rights to do so.
Pronetos- is a social network for scholars–a way for professors to meet others in the same discipline, to publish
articles online, to get feedback and reviews, and to get work published. One of the most obvious reasons to join
this network is simply to network and meet other people who are ostensibly interested in reading and reviewing (or
commenting on) your work. Chris Blanchard, CEO, and founder of Pronetos. Chris is a history graduate student at
BSU and also received his undergraduate history degree from BSU. He is computer-smart, energetic, and full of
great ideas.
Academia.edu- is a social networking platform for academics. Its mission is to provide a system for scientists to
share their results, independently of the current journal system. The founder of Academia.edu is Richard Prince.
Academia.edu is to accelerate the world's research. Their goal is to speed up research in every domain - finding a
solution to climate change; finding cures for diseases; evolving artificial intelligence. They want to accelerate
research in all these fields, and others too.

Education-Related Learning Community

TeacherTube- is an online community for sharing instructional videos, educational videos, and other teaching
resources. It was founded in 2007 by Jason Smith, a former educator who saw the need for a safe and educational
alternative to YouTube.
We The Teachers- is a community of educators that aims to provide a platform for teachers to connect with each
other, share their experiences, and learn from each other.
TeachAde- TeachAde is a social network for educators. Members can find and share lesson plans, audio, video,
and other multimedia resources.
LearnHub- LearnHub is home to many different online communities for students and lifelong learners. Some of the
most popular communities focus on studying abroad, standardized test prep, languages, social sciences, and
mathematics.
GradeGuru- Created for college students, this free knowledge sharing network makes it easy for students to share
and find class-specific notes. Members can also utilize GradeGuru's free study materials and academic tools.
Connexions- This Rice University site allows members to contribute learning modules and study modules that have
been created by other people.
Online Resources- refers to digital content and materials available on the internet that provide information, education,
entertainment, or other services.
