SiteRecoveryExpress
CitrixEssentialsforHyperVExpressEditionisafreeeditionoftheCitrixEssentialsproduct.Citrix EssentialsExpressEditionprovidesalimitedversionoftheSiteRecoveryfeature,,calledSiteRecovery Express,whichentitlesyoutouseStorageLinktoprovideaframeworkforreplicatingandfailingovera manageddeploymentofapplicationstorageresources,physicalhosts,andHyperVvirtualmachinesto anotherlocation.ThisfreeeditionallowsyoutouseStorageLinktosetupSiteRecoveryExpressforup totwoHyperVserversandasinglestoragearrayontheprimarysiteanduptotwoHyperVserversand asinglestoragearrayontheremotesecondarysite,withouttherequirementofalicenseor installationoftheCitrixLicenseserver.

Overview Featureoverview
CitrixStorageLinkhasanumberofkeyfeaturesthathelpsimplifythelifecyclemanagementof applicationsandvirtualmachinesinyourvirtualizedinfrastructure.Thesekeyfeaturesinclude: Rapidvirtualmachinecreation(UI).StorageLinkallowsyoutoformgoldenimages(virtual machinetemplates)fromstoragevolumes(LUNs)inyourstoragearraysalongwithdataLUNsto enablerapidvirtualmachinecreationofcomplexserversbyleveragingthecloningandsnapshot capabilitiesoftheunderlyingstoragearrayhardware.

 Improvedstorageutilization.Thisallowsadministratorstoeasilyaddcapacityandimprove utilizationoftheirstoragehardwareinvestmentbyleveragingthinprovisioningcapabilities inherentinmostmodernstoragearrays. LowerTCO.StorageLinkautomatestheconfigurationandprovisioningofvirtualmachine storage;usingtemplates,theprovisionedstorageismatchedtothevirtualmachinestorage resourcesrequirements;StorageLinkreducesmanualerrorpronetasksandensuresthevirtual machinehasthenecessarystorageitneeds. StorageLinkprovidestheuserwithagraphicaluserinterface,acommandlineinterfaceandWindows PowerShellsupport. StorageLinkgraphicallydisplaysstorageassets,virtualizationhosts,hostHBAs,andfabricinformation.

TheStorageLinkGatewaycanbeinstalledonaphysicalorvirtualmachine.
Note: If you are using the Windows firewall, your firewall will be disabled automatically. If you are using a 3rd party firewall, you must manually create a firewall rule to open port 21605, or disable your firewall altogether. Another alternative is to run both the Citrix StorageLink Manager and the Citrix StorageLink Gateway service on the same machine.

InstallationProcess
Insummary,theinstallationprocessforCitrixStorageLinkgoesasfollows: 1. InstallandapplyCitrixLicenseServertheStorageLinkGatewayandStorageLinkManager requirethatyouinstallCitrixLicenseServerandapplythatlicensetoyourhost(Platinumand EnterpriseeditionsonlyExpresseditionrequiresnolicense). 2. InstallStorageLinkGatewaythisisthefirststepforusingStorageLink.TheStorageLink GatewaycanbeinstalledonWindows2003ServerorWindows2008Server. 3. InstallStorageLinkManagertheStorageLinkManagerisinstallednext.Itisthegraphicaluser interfaceusedtointerfacewiththeStorageLinkGateway. EitherbeforeorafterStorageLinkinstallation,theoverallenvironmentneedstobesetupforusewith StorageLink: Oneofthesupportedstoragesystemsmustbeavailable OneormorehypervisorhostsrunningWindows2008Servermustbeavailable

Note: If, after installing StorageLink, you want to use a different License Server, use the ls-set command:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\StorageLink\Client>ls-set <license server> <license port>

You will need to restart the StorageLink Gateway service after this. There is also a ls-get command which retrieves the License Server settings.

Note: Citrix License Server is not required for the free Citrix Essentials Express edition. If you are installing the Express edition, skip this section. Citrix License Server is not supported on Windows Server 2008 R2.

ToinstallCitrixLicensingServer 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Fromtheautorunhomescreen,selectInstallCitrixLicenseServer. Whenpromptedwiththesecuritywarning,selectRun. IfpromptedwiththeInternetExplorerSecurityWarning,message,selectRun. ClickNextatthebottomoftheWelcomescreentocontinue. SelectIacceptthelicenseagreementandthenclickNexttocontinue. UsethedefaultinstallationpathorclickBrowsetobrowsetoyourpreferredinstallation destination,andthenclickNexttocontinue. 7. Selectthefeaturesyouwouldliketoinstall.Allfeaturesareselectedbydefault.ClickNextto continue. 8. Selectthefolderwhereyouwouldlikethelicensefilesstoredorjustcontinuetousethedefault valueC:\ProgramFiles(x86)\Citrix\Licensing\MyFiles\.ClickNexttocontinue.

9. Entertheportnumberforthelicenseserverandtheportnumberforthedaemon,orjust continuetousethedefaultvalues(recommended).ClickNexttocontinue.

10. Theinstallerhasgatheredthenecessaryinformationandisreadytobegininstallingthe software.ClickNexttocontinue. 11. Theinstallationhascompleted.ClickFinishatthebottomofthescreentoexittheinstallation.

Gettingyourlicensefile
WhenyoupurchaseStorageLink,youareprovidedwithalicensecodethatwillallowyoutodownloada licensefilefromtheCitrixwebsite.Toactivateyourlicense,youneed anaccountontheMyCitrixwebsite.Ifyoudontalreadyhaveanaccount,goto http://citrix.com/English/myCitrix/loginNewUser.asptocreateone. thehostnameofthemachineonwhichyouinstalledCitrixLicenseServer.

Note: A Citrix license is required for Citrix Essentials Platinum and Enterprise editions only. It is not required for the free Citrix Essentials Express edition. If you are installing the Express edition, skip this section.

Installingthelicensefile
OnceyouhavedownloadedyourStorageLinklicensefile,youneedtoinstallit.

Toinstallyourlicense 1. CopythelicensefiletoC:\programfiles\Citrix\Licensing\MyFiles(orwhereveryouinstalled LicenseServer). 2. InaCommandPrompt,changedirectoriestothelicenseserverlocationC:\program files\Citrix\Licensingandenterthefollowingcommand:

 whichtriggerstheLicenseServertorereadthelicensefile.
Note: You will need to modify the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration (ESC) so that you can download and install required software components, such as Suns Java runtime environment required by Citrix Licensing Sever, to ensure the Citrix Essentials product works as desired. To temporarily disable IE ESC in order to download these software components, please do the following: 1. Open Administrative Tools -> Server Manager. 2. On the Summary Page, click on Configure IE ESC, and choose the Off radio button for Administrators and Users. 3. Install all required software components. 4. Re enable IE ESC.

InstallingtheStorageLinkGateway
1. LogontoyourMicrosoftWindowshostastheAdministratoruserorasauserwhoisamember oftheWindowsAdministratorsgroup.TheGatewayinstallationprocesswillaskyouforyour Administratoraccountlogininformation,astheGatewaymustrunatanelevatedpermission levelinorderforittomanageotherhostsintheenvironment. 2. InserttheDVDcreatedfromtheISOimagedownloadedfromtheCitrixwebsite. 3. ClickInstallStorageLinkGatewayfromtheautorunscreen. 4. Thesetupwizardstarts.ClicktheNextbuttonatthebottomoftheWelcomescreentocontinue. 5. TheLicenseAgreementscreenappears.ClickIAgreetocontinue. 6. IfinstallingtheCitrixEssentialsPlatinumorEnterpriseEdition,theLicenseServerSettingscreen appears:

IfyouhaveaPlatinumEditionorEnterpriseEditionlicense,checktheUseLicenseServer checkboxandentertheLicenseHostNameandLicensePortNumberintheprovidedfields. Otherwise,uncheckthecheckboxandtheExpressEditionwillbeinstalled. ClickNexttocontinue. IfinstallingtheCitrixEssentialsExpressEdition,theLicenseServerSettingscreenisnot displayed. 7. TheChooseInstallLocationscreenappears.UsethedefaultinstallationpathorclickBrowseto specifyyourpreferredinstallationdestination,andthenclickInstallatthebottomofthescreen tocontinue. 8. Theinstallerhasgatheredthenecessaryinformationandbeginsinstallingthesoftware. 9. Whentheinstallationhascompleted,clicktheFinishatthebottomofthewizardtocomplete theinstallation.

GettingStartedwithStorageLink
ThefollowingtasksneedtobeperformedbeforeusingStorageLink.DetailscanbefoundintheCitrix StorageLinkUserGuide. Configureyourhypervisorhostsfirst,enableeachservertofunctionasaHyperVhost.Todo so,opentheServerManagerandclickontheRolesnodeinthetreeintheleftpane;theninthe right,clickonAddRoletolaunchtheAddRoleswizard,andselectHyperVfromthelistofroles thewizardpresents.Enablingthisrolerequiresareboot.Afterthereboot,makesurethatyou openHyperVManagerandaccepttheEULAthatitwillpresenttoyouonfirstlaunch. Second,enabletheiSCSIinitiator.FromtheStartmenu,selectAdministrativeTools>iSCSI initiator,andconfirmthatyoudowanttoenabletheiSCSIinitiatorservicewhensoprompted. ConnecttotheStorageLinkGatewayfirststepistoconnecttheadministrativeconsoletothe StorageLinkGateway(canalsobedonethroughtheStorageLinkcommandlineorPowerShell interfaces). ConnecttoyourHypervisorhostsoncetheStorageLinkGatewayandStorageLinkManagerare installedyouneedtoaddyouhypervisorhoststhroughtheStorageLinkManager(canalsobe donethroughtheStorageLinkcommandlineorPowerShellinterfaces). AddStorageArrayAdaptorinordertointerfacewithyourstoragemodules,theymustbe addedtotheStorageLinkGatewaythroughtheStorageLinkGUI(canalsobedonethroughthe commandlineorPowerShellinterfaces). CreateaStorageRepositorycreateastoragerepositoryusingtheStoragerepositoryWizard (canalsobedonethroughtheStorageLinkcommandlineorPowerShellinterfaces).

UsingSQLServerwithStorageLink Gateway
StorageLinkGatewaysupportsSQLiteandMicrosoftSQLServer2008databases(forSQLServer,only WindowsAuthenticationmodeissupported.)SQLiteisinstalledwithStorageLinkGatewayandisused bydefault.

Requirements
IfyouwanttouseSQLServer,thereareacoupleofrequirementsandrecommendationsforbest performance: Usethesameserver(physicalorvirtualmachine)onwhichtheStorageLinkGatewayserviceand SQLServerbothrun.SQLServermustbecollocatedwithStorageLinkGatewayinordertoallow forWindowsauthentication,whichistheonlykindofauthenticationStorageLinkGateway supports. UseaserverwithtwoormoreCPUs(physicalorvirtualmachine)forbestperformance.Ifyou douseasingleCPUhost,runtheSQLServerserviceatahigherprocessprioritythanthe StorageLinkGatewayservice.Todothis,opentheWindowsTaskManagerandclickonthe Processestab.FindtheStorageLinkGatewayprocess(listedascslg_service.exe*32),rightclick onit,andselectSetPriorityfromthecontextmenu.SetittoNormalifitnotalreadysettothat choice.Next,findtheSQLServerprocess(listedassqlservr.exe*32orsomethingsimilar),right clickandchooseSetPriority,andselectAboveNormalorHigh.ClickChangePriorityinthe confirmationboxthatappears,thenclosetheTaskManager. Ifneitheroftheserecommendationsarefollowed,youwillseeaheavyslowdownofcertain operations(particularlywhileusingSiteRecoveryandvalidatingvirtualmachinefailover configurationonasecondarysite),aswellasspuriousfailuresofsiterecoveryplanvalidation withdatabasetimeoutsregisteredintheStorageLinkservicelogs. WealsorecommendthatyouinstallStorageLinkManageronadifferenthost(physicalserveror virtualmachine)thantheonerunningStoragelinkGatewaySQLServer.

NOTE: The server name and instance name parameters depend on a couple of factors: SQL Server compact edition uses (local) for the Database Server Name. All editions other than the compact edition use a real server name, localhost in most cases. For editions other than SQL Server Compact Edition, the Database Instance Name may or may not exist depending on whether SQL Server was installed as a "named instance" or as an "unnamed default instance." In the case of SQL Server Compact edition, there is no named instance; only the unnamed default instance can be used.
