Conceptual Framework

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to investigate the impact of cyberbullying on the mental health of

adolescents in Bais City National Science High School. Specifically, the study aims to assess the

prevalence of cyberbullying among students, examine its association with mental health

outcomes, and identify any potential risk factors or protective factors that may influence the

relationship between cyberbullying and mental health. By addressing these aspects, the study

aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the issue and pave the way for the

development of targeted interventions and support systems for affected students.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. How do adolescents perceive the impact of cyberbullying on their mental health?

2. What coping mechanisms do adolescents employ to deal with cyberbullying and its

impact on their mental health?

INVESTIGATING THE IMPACT OF CYBERBULLYING ON ADOLESCENTS’
MENTAL HEALTH IN BAIS CITY NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL
3. In what ways does cyberbullying affect different aspects of adolescents' mental health?

4. How do adolescents perceive the role of school policies and interventions in addressing

cyberbullying and its impact on mental health?

5. How do adolescents believe parents/guardians can support them in dealing with

cyberbullying and its impact on mental health?

Statement of Hypotheses

Based on preliminary research and previous studies on cyberbullying, it is hypothesized

that there is a significant association between cyberbullying and adverse mental health outcomes

among adolescents in Bais City National Science High School. It is expected that students who

experience cyberbullying will demonstrate higher levels of depression, anxiety, and stress

compared to those who do not experience cyberbullying. Furthermore, it is anticipated that

certain risk factors, such as a lack of social support or low self-esteem, may exacerbate the

negative impact of cyberbullying on mental health, while protective factors like strong peer

relationships and self-efficacy may mitigate its effects.

Significance of the Study

The study Investigating the Impact of Cyberbullying on Adolescents' Mental health in

Bais City National Science High School holds several significant implications. Firstly, it

contributes to the growing body of research on cyberbullying, shedding light on its effects

specifically on the mental health of adolescents. By identifying the relationship between

cyberbullying and mental health outcomes, the study can raise awareness about the detrimental

consequences of cyberbullying and emphasize the need for preventive measures and

interventions. Additionally, the findings of this study can inform educators, parents, and
INVESTIGATING THE IMPACT OF CYBERBULLYING ON ADOLESCENTS’

policymakers about the urgency of addressing cyberbullying in schools. Understanding the

specific impact of cyberbullying on mental health in a localized context, such as Bais City

National Science High School, can enable targeted interventions and support systems to mitigate

the negative consequences experienced by adolescents.

Chapter I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Introduction

Cyberbullying has become a prevalent issue in today's digital age, particularly

among adolescents. With the increasing use of technology and social media platforms,
INVESTIGATING THE IMPACT OF CYBERBULLYING ON ADOLESCENTS’
MENTAL HEALTH IN BAIS CITY NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL
instances of cyberbullying have risen significantly, posing a potential threat to the mental

health and well-being of young individuals. Bais City National Science High School is not

immune to this problem, and it is crucial to understand the impact of cyberbullying on the

mental health of its students. By investigating this issue, we can gain valuable insights into

the extent of the problem and develop effective strategies to address it.

In addition, Cyberbullying is an extremely significant problem that affects not only the

young victims but also their families, the bully, and bystanders. The victim of cyberbullying,

however, may encounter a multitude of emotional problems that have a negative impact on their

social and academic performance as well as their general mental health.

As parents today, you might not have personally experienced cyberbullying. It's hard to imagine

how simple letters on a computer screen could be so excruciating. After all, it appears that

bullying in schools and on playgrounds has long been an issue. Perhaps you observed bullying

while you were in school or were the target of it. You might sense it. As a result, the current

study will assess the impact of cyberbullying on adolescent’s mental health in relation to student

learning among students in the 2022–2023 school year.

Scope and Delimitations:

This study will involve Junior High School students that are officially enrolled in Bais

City National High School, with a total of 40 during the School Year 2022-2023. Senior high

school students is not part of the study.

The result of the study only shows the investigating the impact of cyberbullying on

adolescents' mental health of Junior high school students and not to the whole population of Bais

City National Science High School.

Definition of Terms

Cyberbullying – is the act of using electronic communication tools, such as social media, instant

messaging, or online platforms, to harass, intimidate, or harm others repeatedly.

Mental Health - is the emotional, psychological, and social well-being of an individual,

encompassing their ability to cope with stress, handle emotions, maintain healthy relationships,

and make decisions.

Effectiveness- is the capability of producing a desired result or the ability to produce desired

output. When something is deemed effective, it means it has an intended or expected outcome, or

produces a deep, vivid impression.

Survey Questionnaire- a survey questionnaire is a set of questions used in a survey. The survey

questionnaire is a type of data gathering method that is utilized to collect, analyze and interpret

the different views of a group of people from a particular population.

Descriptive study - is a powerful tool used by scientists and researchers to gather information

about specific groups and phenomena. This type of research provides a detailed and accurate

picture of the characteristics and behavior of a particular population or subject.

Standard deviation - it measures the extent of scattering in a set of values, typically compared

to the mean value of the set.[1][2][3] The calculation of the SD depends on whether the dataset is

a sample or the entire population.

Variance - is a measure of variability. It is calculated by taking the average of squared

deviations from the mean. Variance tells you the degree of spread in your data set. The more

spread the data, the larger the variance is in relation to the mean

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Related Literature

Cyberbullying, a pervasive issue in the digital age, it has emerged as a significant concern

affecting the well-being of young individuals. Cyberbullying can occur through SMS and apps,

or online such as social media, forums, and games where people can view, participate, and share

content. Cyberbullying includes sending, posting or sharing negative, harmful, false or mean

content about another person (Stop Bullying).

This may involve sharing personal or private information about others that may cause

embarrassment or humiliation. Some types of cyberbullying cross the line and become illegal or
INVESTIGATING THE IMPACT OF CYBERBULLYING ON ADOLESCENTS’
MENTAL HEALTH IN BAIS CITY NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL
even criminal. This review examines the prevalence and forms of cyberbullying, its effects on

mental health outcomes, and explores potential interventions and strategies to address this

problem. The findings emphasize the need for proactive measures within the school environment

to mitigate the adverse impact of cyberbullying on the mental health of adolescents. In real-

world bullying situations, most bullying incidents occur between a victim and a bully (or group

of bullies) at school.

These incidents range from simple verbal abuse to more serious bullying acts such as

spreading rumors, harassment, threats and incidents of physical violence. However, although

victims of real-life bullying are given reprieve when they go home, they cannot escape

cyberbullying.

Cyberbullying doesn't end when the school bell rings. It can last at any time and all night.

This can be in text messages, social media posts, chat room messages, altered images or videos,

and many other digital forms. Cyberbullying gives victims little opportunity to defend

themselves. No teacher or parent can see what is happening and step in to stop it. Because

cyberbullying can be anonymous, victims rarely have the opportunity to report bullying to

authorities. Cyberbullying can also quickly expose hundreds, if not thousands, of bullying

incidents across social media platforms. If the victim knows who the bully is and chooses to

block the bully on social media, the bully can simply create a new account. Alternatively, you

can send a text message, send a message, or use a friend's account. Kids these days are very

imaginative and tech-savvy. There is not much a victim can do if they want to participate in

cyberbullying.

MENTAL HEALTH IN BAIS CITY NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL
"People do and say hurtful and humiliating things online that they would never say in

person," said Eric Alcera, M.D., medical director of Hackensack Meridian Behavior Health. .

"When cyberbullies spread rumors or share embarrassing photos on social media, the words and

images can go viral and reach more children within minutes," Eric said. There is potential,” he

also said (Sirisilla, Shrutika).

Evidence shows that the ongoing and pervasive nature of cyberbullying often results in

more detrimental outcomes for victims than traditional bullying, especially symptoms of

depression. Considering this relevance, it is speculated that the psychological effects of

cyberbullying on perpetrators may be different from traditional bullying. Furthermore,

cyberbullying can disrupt healthy social relationships and hinder the development of strong

interpersonal skills, leading to a sense of social exclusion and loneliness. Incidences of stress,

depression, and anxiety disorders are higher in students involved in cyberbullying than in

students not involved in cyberbullying (Sc,Michael Greenwood M.).

Overall, cyberbullying poses a significant threat to the mental well-being of adolescents,

necessitating effective preventive measures and support systems to mitigate its detrimental

impact.

The aim of this study is to Investigate the Impact of Cyberbullying on the Mental health

of Adolescents in Bais City National Science High School. Cyberbullying refers to the deliberate

and repetitive use of electronic communication tools to harass, intimidate, or harm individuals. It

involves the use of technology such as social media platforms, messaging apps, email, online

forums, and gaming platforms to target victims. It has become a prevalent issue among

adolescents. The prevalence rates may vary across different studies and contexts, but research
INVESTIGATING THE IMPACT OF CYBERBULLYING ON ADOLESCENTS’
MENTAL HEALTH IN BAIS CITY NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL
consistently shows its significant impact. Adolescents who experience cyberbullying often report

heightened levels of anxiety and stress.
