Adding & Subtracting Integers (33 Exercises)

The document provides rules for adding and subtracting positive and negative integers. It explains that when adding two positives the sum is positive, and when adding two negatives the sum is negative. It also explains that when adding a positive and negative integer you subtract the numbers and the sign of the answer depends on the sign of the larger integer. The document then applies these rules to multiple addition and subtraction examples with positive and negative integers.

Adding Positive and Negative Integers Name _________________________

Juan Carlos Salgado

Rule: When adding two positive integers, the sum is positive. 7+5 =12
Rule: When adding two negative integers, the sum is negative –7+ –5 =–12
Rule: When adding a positive and a negative integer, subtract to find the
difference between the two integers. If the larger integer in the equation is
positive, the answer will be positive. If the larger integer in the equation is
negative, the answer will be negative. 7+(–5)=2 or –7+5=–2.

Subtracting Positive and Negative Integers
Rule: Change the subtraction problem into an addition problem. Follow addition rules.
Example: 7–9=
7+(–9)=
Change the minus sign to the plus sign. Change positive 9 into negative 9.
One integer is positive and one is negative so subtract the two numbers. 9-7=2
Give the answer the same sign as the largest integer in the equation.
9 is the largest integer in the equation. 9 is negative so the answer is negative. 7+(–9)=–2.

Example: –7–4=
Change the minus sign to the plus sign. Change positive 4 to negative 4. –7+(–4)=
Both integers are negative so add them.
When adding two negative integers the sum is negative. –7+(–4)=–11

Example: 9–(–6)=
Change the minus sign into the plus sign. Change negative 6 to positive six. 9+(6)=
Both integers are positive so add the two integers. 9+(6)=15
When adding two positive integers the sum is positive. 9+(6)=15
