Torsion of Bars

The document is a test report for a student's experiment on torsion of bars. It details the apparatus used, procedures, formulas, sample calculations, results which show steel tubes are more resistant to torsion than solid bars, and a discussion of the results and safety considerations.

Torsion of Bars
Aim:
The SE 110.29 Torsion of Bars can be used to investigate the fundamentals of torsional loading. Two
adjustable scales permit reading of the torsion angle at any given cross-section.
Apparatus:

1. Universal Test Frame SE 112 (not included).

2. Chuck, adjustable.
3. Adjustable angle scale.
4. Chuck-mounted test bar.
5. Clamped-on pointer for angle scale.
6. Additional test bars of differing cross-section.
7. Wheel for introducing moment.
8. Adjustable guide pulley.
9. Hanger with weights.

First remove previous test bar:

o Release both pointers for angle scale (3):

Slacken off hexagon socket-head bolts M2.5 (a).

o Open left chuck and move it to the left(b).
o Release right chuck, take out test bar and remove
pointers (c).

NOTICE: Take care not to break

off pointers.

Fitting new test bar:

1. Slip pointers loosely onto desired test bar.
2. Insert test bar with pointers into right chuck, thread
pointers between angle scales and insert test bar into
left chuck.

NOTICE: Take care not to break

off pointers.

 Firmly close both chucks to prevent test bar slipping through

under load.
 Set desired distance between angle scales.
 Adjust pointer in front of angle scale and secure in 0°
position (Fig. 3.4).
 Apparatus is now ready for performance of experiment.

Result:

This shows that the steel cross section of a tube of the same diameter is more resistant to torsion. Twisting
is very common in the slit cross section (test strip 1). Shear tension causes longitudinal cross section
deformation in this situation.

Discussion of result:

In all tests 1,2,3, and 4, there was a positive association between load F in N and torque MT in mm.
