Solar Quiz
Solar Quiz
1. What are the key differences and similarities between active solar heating and passive
solar heating?
There are two ways to harness solar energy. Passive systems are structures whose design,
placement, or materials optimize the use of heat or light directly from the sun. Active
systems have devices to convert the sun's energy into a more usable form, such as hot
water or electricity.
2. On a clear day, what is a good rule of thumb for direct radiation power density (measured
in terms of watts per square meter)?
a) 500 watts per square meter
b) 100 watts per square meter
c) 1000 watts per square meter
d) 250 watts per square meter
3. Approximately how many kilowatt-hours represents the daily average energy consumption
for water heating in an average United Kingdom (UK) household?
a) 5 kilowatt-hours
b) 1 kilowatt-hour.
c) 20 kilowatt-hours.
d) 10 kilowatt-hours.
4. Assuming you are somewhere in the northern hemisphere and do not move the solar
panel, what tilt angle value will be perpendicular to the Sun's rays at mid-day on the spring
and autumn equinox?
a) A tilt angle equal to 180 degrees.
b) A tilt angle equal to the latitude .
c) A tilt angle equal to the longitude.
d) A tilt angle equal to 45 degrees.
5. In terms of glass and transmittance, what do manufacturers strive for when manufacturing
solar collectors? They try to strive for transmittance wich is the fraction of incident light that
passes trough it
Take into account visible light, short-wave infrared radiation, and long-wave infrared light
when answering this question.
6. Explain the similarities and differences between direct and solar diffuse radiation.
direct is going straight and directly to the objective l, and diffuse is going to different
directions and not with a lot of potenci
7. There are 3 forms of heat transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation. Explain the
underlying principles of each.
*Suggestions for your answer:
Conduction - energy flows from hotter to colder regions that are touching.
Convection - hot air expands, rises. When its cooled down it sinks
Radiation - depends on the temperature between de radiating body and its surroundings.
8. Briefly explain each of the following solar heating systems: swimming pool heating; roof
mounted water heating (there are two 'types' buy you only need to pick one); Trombe wall;
conservatory; and direct gain.
The cool water from the pool is being pumped up to the roof where the sun is heating it up to
be put back in the pool. The rooftop solar water heater works the same except the water that
is being heated doesn't go in the pump. It is being heated by the pipes. All three models
have a window to heat up the house. the conservatory has a large area where the hot air
from the greenhouse goes in the house. The Trombe wall has pockets for the hot air to come
in and the cold air to go out. I direct gain there is no greenhouse to store the hot air which
means it comes through a large window
9. Identify the five techniques used for general passive solar heating. aperture, absorber,
thermal mass, distribution and control
