ONLINE SEARCH & RESEARCH

Online search and research are more than just

“googling”-typing a word in Google and then click the
button.

It is a skill that every Internet user should know to

do smart searching and this starts with improving
search and research skills to get better results.
The Internet has made our lives easier especially in
terms of doing research. By browsing the internet, we
can access limitless topics. Web-based catalogs are
available in many libraries to assist researchers in
locating printed books, journals, government documents
and other materials. The biggest obstacle facing all
researchers on the internet is how to effectively and
efficiently access the vast amount of information
available

SEARCH ENGINES
• These are websites used for retrieval of data, files, or documents from data
bases.
TIPS ON IMPROVING SEARCH AND RESEARCH
SKILLS
NARROW THE TOPIC
Identify the key concepts or important ideas. Assuming that you
would like to search for answer to this question:
“What precautionary measures should you observe when you are
logged in a public computer?”
Do not type the whole question in the search box as it often
leads to a large number of and inappropriate results.
NARROW THE TOPIC

“What precautionary measures should you observed when

you are logged in a public computer?”

KEY WORDS are terms that are used in by most

search engines to find related documents.
PUT THE WORD “AND” BETWEEN KEYWORDS TO CREATE A
SEARCH STRING
IDENTIFY THE SYNONYMS OF THE KEYWORDS

Not all databases or articles use the same words to describe a

topic. Group similar words together by using the word “OR” for a quick
and relevant search.
Examples:
❑Precautionary measures - preventive measures
❑Observe - pay attention
❑Logged in - signed in
USE THE PLUS (+) SIGN FOR A MORE SPECIFIC SEARCH
Just type + before a keyword to indicate that the word after the
sign is a required word that must be found in the search.
Example: +preventive measures

USE THE MINUS (-) SIGN FOR A MORE SPECIFIC SEARCH

If you want to exclude a word from your personal search, place

a minus sign just before (without any space) the word you want to
exclude.
Example: public computers - personal
USE WILDCARDS FOR BROADER SEARCH
Wildcard characters (*) let you find variations of word
Example: measure*

USE QUOTATION MARKS TO FIND PHRASES OR NAMES

Enclose the phrase or name that you want to search in

quotation marks
Example: “precautionary measures”
USE SEVERAL SEARCH ENGINES
Search engines are programs that look for documents based
from specified keywords and return these documents were found.
Major search engines include Google, Yahoo, AltaVista, Bing
and Lycos.
USE WILDCARDS FOR BROADER SEARCH
Wildcard characters (*) let you find variations of word
Example: measure*

USE QUOTATION MARKS TO FIND PHRASES OR NAMES

Enclose the phrase or name that you want to search in

quotation marks
Example: “precautionary measures”
OTHER SEARCHING SKILLS AND TOOLS

➢ Ampersand (@) is used to find social tags.

Example: @SteveJobs
➢ Hashtag (#) is used to find popular hashtags.
Example: #LawOfClassroom
➢Finding Documents – using the filetype refines the search for
documents on the web.
filetype:pdf filetype:doc
filetype:xls filetype:ptp

Some websites produce documents for the purpose of
motivating users to buy products. If this is the case, information
might be biased.
