Assignment

The document discusses a queuing model for a loading gate at a fruit distribution company. It examines different scenarios: one loader, two loaders, and two loading platforms. With one loader, the probability of more than 3 trucks waiting or being loaded is 10.54%. Adding a second loader reduces the hourly cost of truck driver idle time by $3.50. Using two parallel loading platforms lowers the average number of trucks waiting to 0.0560 and average wait time to 0.019 hours. However, server utilization is not maximized. Adding a second loader or building another platform both improve throughput but in different ways based on the company's priorities.

CLASS ASSIGNMENT FOR TM 7

042111233265 – Nauraluna Nevetari S

Question
12-19 Juhn and Sons Wholesale Fruit Distributors employs one worker whose job is to load fruit
on outgoing company trucks. Trucks arrive at the loading gate at an average of 24 per day, or 3
per hour, according to a Poisson distribution. The worker loads them at a rate of 4 per hour,
following approximately the exponential distribution in service times. Determine the operating
characteristics of this loading gate problem. What is the probability that there will be more than
three trucks either being loaded or waiting? Discuss the results of your queuing model
computation.

Giving mean arrival rate λ = 3 and mean service rate µ = 4

The operating of this loading gate problem
λ
ρ = µ
3
= 4
ρ = 0. 75
Average time a truck in the system is,
1
𝑊 = µ−λ
1
𝑊 = 4−3
𝑊 = 1

Average number of trucks in the system is,

λ
𝐿 = µ−λ
3
𝐿 = 4−3
𝐿 = 3
The probability that there will be more than 3 trucks either being loaded or waiting is,
3
𝑝 = 𝑝 𝑥 (1 − 𝑝)
3
𝑝 = 0. 75 𝑥 (1 − 0. 25)
𝑝 = 0. 1054
12-21 Truck drivers working for Juhn and Sons (see Problems 12-19 and 12-20) are paid a salary
of $20 per hour on average. Fruit loaders receive about $12 per hour. Truck drivers waiting in the
queue or at the loading gate are drawing a salary but are productively idle and unable to generate
revenue during that time. What would be the hourly cost savings to the firm associated with
employing two loaders instead of one?

So, for every hour of work, the cost of idle time for the truck drivers is:

Idle time cost = (1 - 0.25) x $20 = $15

Cost savings = (1/2) x $12 = $6

New idle time cost = (1 - 0.125) x $20 = $17.50

Therefore, the net hourly cost savings associated with employing two loaders instead of one is:

𝑁𝐶𝑆 = 𝐶𝑜𝑠𝑡 𝑆𝑎𝑣𝑖𝑛𝑔 − 𝐼𝑛𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒𝑑 𝑖𝑛 𝐼𝑑𝑙𝑒 𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 = $6 − ($17. 50 − $15) = $3. 50

So, the hourly cost savings associated with employing two loaders instead of one is $3.50.

12-22 Juhn (of Problem 12-19) is considering building a second platform or gate to speed the
process of loading the fruit trucks. This, he thinks, will be even more efficient than simply hiring
another loader to help out the first platform (as in Problem 12-20). Assume that each worker at
each platform will be able to load 4 trucks per hour and that trucks will continue to arrive at the
rate of 3 per hour. Find the waiting line’s new operating conditions. Is this new approach indeed
speedier than the other two considered?

To analyze the impact of building a second platform on the waiting line's operating conditions,
we can use queuing theory. Specifically, we can use the M/M/2 model, which assumes a Poisson
arrival process, an exponential service time distribution, and two parallel servers.

Given that trucks arrive at a rate of 3 per hour and each worker can load 4 trucks per hour, the
arrival rate λ is 3 and the service rate μ is 8 (2 workers x 4 trucks per hour per worker).

Using the formulas for the M/M/2 model, we can calculate the operating characteristics of the
waiting line with two parallel servers:

● The utilization factor

λ
ρ = (2 𝑥 µ)

ρ = 0. 1875

● The average number of trucks in the system L is 𝐿 = λ 𝑥 𝑊 , where W is the average

𝐿
waiting time in the system. Using Little's law, we have 𝑊 = (λ+µ)

𝐿
𝑊 = 11

λ
𝐿 = (2 𝑥 (µ − λ /2))

𝐿 = 0. 333

𝐿
Therefore, 𝑊 = 11

𝑊 = 0. 030

● The Average number of trucks waiting in line Lq is

2
𝐿𝑞 = λ / (2 𝑥 µ 𝑥 ( µ − λ / 2))

𝐿𝑞 = 0. 0560

● The average time a truck spends waiting in line Wq is

𝐿𝑞
𝑊𝑞 = λ

𝑊𝑞 = 0. 019

By comparing these findings, we can see that creating a second platform causes the
average number of trucks standing in line to be lower (Lq), as well as the average amount
of time a truck spends standing in line to be lower (Wq). Yet, as the usage factor () is also
the lowest, the servers are not being used to their full potential. Juhn's priorities will
determine whether this new method is really faster than the other two. The best course of
action is to construct a second platform if he wants to reduce truck wait times. However,
hiring a second loader to operate with the first platform (as in Issue 12-20) is a preferable
choice if he wants to maximize server utilization.
