DRIVE SELECTION For Standard and Non Standard Motor Speeds The following information is required: 1. KW POWER AND TYPE OF DRIVER, 2. THE RPM OF THE DRIVER, 3, THE RPM OF THE DRIVEN MACHINE. 4, THE SHAFT DIAMETERS AND KEYSEAT DIMEN- SIONS, 5, THE EXACT OR APPROXIMATE CENTER DIS- ‘TANCE REQUIRED. 6. OPERATING CONDITIONS OF DRIVE. ‘Atypical example, 1. The driver is a 7,SkW squirrel cage, AC electrical motor. High torque 2. The speed of the driver motor is 3000 rpm (2880 rpm. full load speed.) 3. A centrifugal pump is to be driven at 1960 rpm. 4, Both the motor shaft and pump shaft are 35 mm with standard keyseats. 5. The drive will require a 635,0mm to 685,8mm center distance. 6, The drive is operated intermittently with the full 7,5KW required, SELECTION PROCEDURE ‘Step 1— Determine the Design kW Power Refer to the service factor chart for the TYPE driven. ‘machine (page F-33). Check for any additional service fac- tor required for unusual conditions - such as continuous ‘operation andior use of an idler. (See page F-33). Example: In the service factor chart, a centrifugal pump ‘shows to have a service factor of 1,6. We deduct 0.2 for intermittent service. Thus, the service factor is 1,4 ‘The design kW powers found by multiplying the full load kW Power by the service factor. Ths is the KW power for Which you are going to select the drive. Thus, design kW power = 7,5 x 1.4 of 10,5 design kW power. ‘Step 2— Choose the Belt Pitch Locate the RPM of the faster shaft from Table 3, Page F- 35. Follow this ine to the point where the design kW ‘selected in Step 1 intersects this speed. The point at which the lines intersect indicates the recommended belt pitch for your drive. Example: The table indicates that a % inch (12,7mm) pitch (H) belt should be selected. ‘Step 3— Select the Drive Pulley combination, belt length and center distance. ‘A. Tumto the Center Distance Tables (pages F-38 thru F-71) for the bett pitch selected in Step 2. Exampla: Since Step 2 indicated a Y6 inch (12,7mm) pitch belt, we refer to H (1/2 inch) pitch. Stock Drive Selection B. Calculate the speed ratio by dividing the rpm of the faster shaft by the rpm of the slower shat. In the Center Distance Tables, refer tothe column headed speed ratio. Locate the speed ratio nearest to your requirements. Example: Driver is listed as 2880 rpm. And the driven as 11980. Ratio: 2880/1960 = 1,47. ._Forthe speed ratio selected, note the number of {grooves and the pitch diameter of each pulley. If there are ‘several combinations close to your requirements, you may want to consider more than one combination in your drive selection, Example: We find that we have a choice of two drives, a 30 groove DriveR with a 44 groove DriveN, or a 19 {groove DriveR with a 28 groove DriveN, D._ Read across to the right for shaft centers nearest 10 those you require. We find the 30 tooth and 44 tooth ‘meet this requirement The belt size is shown at the top of the center distance column, Example: We find a center distance of 653,4mm which is within the desired range. Reading up this column, we find the belt designated as 700H. E. Calculate the RIM speed. RIM speed equals: Pitch (mm) x Nx RPM ” 60,000 N= Number of grooves in drive RPM = RPM of drive Example: The pitch of our example pulley (30H) is 12,7mm ‘and is operating at 2880 rpm. 12,7 x30 x 2880 Va 2TRSOR20— 18,2000 60,000 “ RIM speed exceeds 33 mis consult Matin. ‘Step 4 — Determine Drive Width ‘A. Tuto the basic kilowatt rating table forthe belt pitch selected. Read down the left hand column to find the rpm Cf your faster shaft and then across to the right and the kw rating per mm of belt width will be found under the ‘column headed by the pulley size you have selected. Interpolate for sizes not shown, Example: By interpolating the H Kw Rating Table we find that our example pulley (2880 rpm forthe fastest shaft, ‘with 30 teeth inthe pulley) 2880 has 10,31 KW rating per mm of belt width. B. Find the number of teeth in mesh, 60(0-4) ‘Arc of Contact = 180- ——— c ‘Arc of Contact xn Teeth in Mesh= | ———_—— 360 F3t Stock Drive Selection ‘SELECTION PROCEDURE ‘Step 4 — Determine Drive Width (Cont.) ‘n= Number of teeth in small puley. Example: The number of teeth in mesh for this application: 0 (282,98 - 121,28) _ ‘c= 100- 92(282.98-121.28) 465,159 653.4 ™ = 13,76 Tim Factor Bormore 700 TEETHIN 5 80 MESH FACTOR 4 ‘60 3 40 2ormore 20 Ifthe numberof teeth in meshis 5 or less, multiply the klo- ‘att per mm of belt width by the TIM factor. Thi isthe cor- rected kW per mm of belt with, Example: No TIM factor correction is necessary for ur exarn ple, since the mutiple of 6 or more teeth in mesh is 1,00. C. Divide the design kilowatt power found in step 1 by the corrected kilowatt power per mm of bett width found in steps 6a and 6b to find the nominal belt width. Ifthe answer contains a fraction, use the next largest stock width, Example: 105 70:31 ,018 nominal width or 1" wide belt ‘Step 5 —Find Belt Length and Center Distance ‘A. To calculate belt length when center distance is known: (0-4? Le2c+1570+a)+ -S= Correct centers by adding to (if standard belt is longer) or Subtracting from (if standard belts shorter) one-half the difference between the calculated belt length and standard belt length, F322 Example: Calculating the belt length on an example drive Using a 610mm center distance, and a 29 tooth and 40, tooth XH pulley: L= 2(610) + 1,57 (282,98 + 205,16) + 2 (282,98 - 205,16) 4 (610) From Stock Selection tables standard pitch length is 770XH ‘ 1955,8mm; therefore, the correct answer to find adjust- e¢ center distance: = 1988.8, 239 30-280 - 2 610mm - 16,5mm = 593,5mm Center Distance with TTOXH Belt. 1988.8 - 1955, 165 B. Tocaleulate centers when belt length is known: b+SP-22 (0-67 6 Calculating our example center distance using a standard ‘TTOXH pitch length bet: c 4 (1955.8) - 6 28318 (282,96 + 205,16) = 4,756,13 4,756.13 + S (6756 137 ~ 32 (282,98 -205,16" ———rorer 4 59455 VALUES: C= Center Distance L= Belt Pitch Length 1D = Pitch Diameter Large Pulley d= Pitch Diameter Small Pulley b=4l -6,28318 (D+ a) NOTE: Use these formulas only when you have adjust- ‘ment available on centers, For fixed center applications, where exact centers are required, consult Martin.
