At the age of 24 he was appointed chief arranger for the National Broadcasting ‘Company’s ime musical program, THE RAIL- OAD HOUR, a position he held for six years. Barker has been associ- ated with 20th Century Fox, Metro Goldwyn-Mayer and Columbia ‘Studios as a composer-arranger-conductor for motion pic- tures and television, He has composed and conducted music {for more that thirty television series including seven years as composer-conductor for the highly rated comedy, series, “BEWITCHED.” The National Academy of Television Arts and ‘Sciences honored him in 1970 for his original music written for the award winning series, “MY WORLD AND WELCOME TOIT," based on the life of James Thurber. He was a mem- berof the arranging staff forthe Oscar winning motion picture "HELLO DOLLY.” He also served as conductor-arranger and recording artist for Warner Bros. and Capitol Records, His compositions and arrangements have been performed and recorded by a variety of musical artists from Frank Sinatra to the Hollywood Bowi and Cincinnati Pops Orchestras, He has received writing commissions from many outstanding music organizations including The United States Air Force Band, ‘The Royal Australian Navy, the Northshore Concert Band, and the Norwegian Army Staff Band. Barker is a member of the American Bandmasters Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fratemity, and Broadcast Music, Inc. Fanciful technological developments - like the automobile, radio, land sound motion pictures - were in their infancy and contributed to the excitement and jubilance of the day. Post-World War "return to normaley” was more of a call to stay out all night and party; for Americans were a people of few cares and great enthusiasms for wing-dings, carousing and mirthful sprees. Peter Finley Dunne’s Mr. Dooley philosophized about almost anything from behind the bar at his fictitious pub; and people flocked into movie houses to see - and hear - the first talki trol of Congress and “The Jazz Singer.” lent Cal" Coolidge occupied the White House, Americans were whooping it up with daffy abandon. While conservative Republicans retained con- it was the time of all-night speakeasies and the glistening new Empire State Building; the New York Yankees “Murderers Row” and the Algonquin Round Table; of Bessie Smith and Duke Ellington; of Clara Bow and Jimmy Cagney. Men in raccoon coats and baggy pants escorted omen in knee-length dresses with feather boas and cloche hats. The opening “ragtime” depicts the prosperous and care- free spiritof the times, “Blues” rapsodizes wistfully and whimsically in roaring twenties fashion, "Manhattan Mayhem’ clev- erly creates a typical busy street scene at a midtown intersection, perhaps at Fifth Avenue and Thirty-fourth street, as cars weave inand around, police whistles shriek in attempted jurisdiction, and a barrage of pedestrians scurry onward.
