Getting Started
Welcome! And thank you for downloading the Sentient Approach Starter Pack.

My name is David Hickson. I expect that we will get to know each other well as you
embark upon this exciting journey toward achieving consistent and profitable trading
and investing.

I have a wealth of information, knowledge, and experience to share with you. It can
seem a little overwhelming at the outset, which is why I created this starter pack.

In your starter pack you will find seven documents:

1) This Read Me First document


2) An Introduction to the Sentient Approach
3) Sentient Approach – Know yourself
4) Sentient Approach – Act on your knowledge
5) A White Paper about Hurst Cycles
6) The 10 Core Concepts of Hurst Cycles

You can read the documents in any order you wish, but I recommend that you read
them in the order presented above.

Starting at the finish line


Let’s get straight to the point, shall we? You’re here because you would like to make
profitable trades (or investments if you are looking at the longer term). You are not here
to learn about an arcane theory or sit through a long history lesson (or waste time
looking up the word arcane, which is admittedly not a word used often in relation to
trading the markets).

So can this approach help you achieve that?

Yes, it can.

I am not going to promise you profits – that would be dishonest. But I can tell you about
others that I have worked with:

Does it work?
Here are a couple of examples of the traders I have worked with:

A man who attended one of JM Hurst’s original workshops in the early 1970s.
When I asked whether Hurst’s methods had worked for him over the years, he
replied with a laugh and a question of his own: “Would you consider 2 billion
dollars working?”

An ex-floor trader from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, who has been
“trading the cycles” for over 40 years. He successfully converted his trading
skills from the frenetic floor of the exchange to the tranquility of his private
trading room (a basement floor with six computers and 35 monitors), where he
continues to grow his substantial fortune of almost a billion dollars by trading
the cycles.

And in case you think this only applies to those who have been trading for 50 years, I will
let Geoff, a novice trader who attended one of my workshops, tell his own story:

That’s great … BUT… (you knew there would be some buts, didn’t you?)

You should be aware that even though I am going to provide some short cuts to
mastering this approach, those who have preceded you and achieved these results all,
without exception, invested time and energy in learning both the arcane theory and also
the lessons contained in the history.

If you are willing to invest time and energy into learning this approach (and I hope you
are), then let’s not waste any more time.

What each document contains:

The Sentient Approach (3 documents)


These documents introduce the Sentient Approach. Our approach to the financial
markets has several aspects:

• our understanding of the way in which the markets really work,


• performing a cycle analysis on the price movement,
• knowing ourselves and our trading psychology (tolerance of risk for instance)
• and making sensible trading or investing decisions based on that cycle analysis.

It is the collection of all these aspects that together we call the Sentient Approach.

I recommend reading the first of these document next.

White Paper on Hurst cycles


JM Hurst was an aeronautical engineer who used mainframe computers to discover the
secrets behind the price movements of the US stock market over 50 years ago. He
discovered that price movements are influenced by a combination of multiple cycles. He
published several works, which have become classics, but the sheer magnitude of his
work has made it difficult to grasp in today’s quick-fix, is-there-an-app-for-that? world.

And so, the White Paper provides a good introduction to Hurst Cycles, which are at the
core of the Sentient Approach. It provides a starting point for understanding what the
cycles are all about.

The 10 core concepts of Hurst cycles


This document delves a little deeper into the world of Hurst Cycles. I have been teaching
people the Sentient Approach, and how to trade or invest based on a Hurst cycles analysis
for almost 15 years. I quickly discovered that when I presented people who are new to
these ideas with a list of the eight Principles, (all with obscure names such as
synchronicity, commonality and harmonicity), their eyes started glazing over and they
began wondering what the options were going to be for lunch. (Yes, I started teaching
this material in the days when we used to meet in person at a workshop venue).

So instead, this document presents:

• 10 simple concepts that provide an excellent starting point for truly


understanding Hurst cycles,
• the implications of an analysis based upon the cycles, and
• initial ideas for making trading decisions upon those cycles.

I have done my best to keep each document short because I know how important your
time is. If you are particularly short on time, I would recommend that you read (or skim)
the first Introduction to the Sentient Approach document now and return to the other
documents later when you feel they would be of benefit to your expanding knowledge.

I do hope this proves to be the start of a truly profitable journey for you and wish you
profitable – and consistent – trading results.
