This study aimed to develop and use teacher made instructional materials otherwise
known as Strategic Intervention Materials (SIMs) and investigated the impact of
these intervention materials in teaching the identified least mastered concepts in
Science IX namely, Circulatory System and Respiratory System. The study was
designed to investigate the effectiveness of using Warriors of the Body as
instructional material at the same time as an intervention material in teaching
Circulatory and Respiratory systems of 217 Grade 9 students in Bernardo Lirio
National High School, SY 2022-2023. The study utilized the single-group pretest-
post-test design. This design was utilized to determine the level of mastery of the
learners in Circulatory and Respiratory system before and after the using the
instructional material. The study also utilized the survey questions to determine the
insights and reflections of the learners in using Warriors of the Body as instructional
materials in learning the Circulatory and Respiratory system. It was revealed that
there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test performance of
the students. The findings of the study have significantly increased the performance
of the learners. Thus, the use of the Warriors of the Body proved very effective and
favorable approach in teaching and learning Circulatory and Respiratory Systems.
The utilization of the SIMs is an effective instruction and intervention that made
students obtained better scores in the posttest.
II. AKNOWLEDGMENT
The researcher would like to acknowledge and express her sincerest appreciation
and heartfelt gratitude to Dr. , the Schools Division Superintendent, to Dr. Rogelio F.
Opulencia, the former Schools Division Superintendent of the Division of Tanauan
City, to Dr. Dennis B. Masangcay, the Education Program Supervisor for Science, to
Mrs. Ma. Liza M. Faustino, the Senior Education Program Specialist-Research and
Planning, to Dr. Jocelyn D. Castillo, the Public Schools District Supervisor-Cluster I,
to the schools’ principal Lilibeth L. Cabrera.
Sincerest gratitude is likewise expressed to Mary Jacqueline C. Gilles, the
Coordinator in Science Department and to all Science teachers at Bernardo Lirio
National High School.
Appreciation was also expressed to Grade 9 learners for their participation in this
study in taking the pre-test and post-test and their insights on Warriors of the Body.
And above all, the researcher expressed gratitude to the Almighty God for providing
the researcher with the knowledge and wisdom to explore ideas and for the provision
of resources to finish the study.
Phase 3. Final Phase. The students will use the SIM in remediation and after
completing the tasks in SIM; the students will answer the same 24-item
teacher-made test to determine whether there is an increase or none in their
performance after using the SIM.
c. Data Analysis Plan
This research will conduct the collection of quantitative data collection using
pretest, posttest, and periodic test, followed by a qualitative data collection and
analysis. It is quantitative because data are collected and interpreted before and
after using the SIM. It is also qualitative which measures the students’ perception on
the effectiveness in using the SIM and its impact on their studies.
The table above presents the mean score of pre-test and post-test and the corresponding
percentage of the Grade 9 students in the Circulatory and Respiratory Systems using the
instructional material “Warriors of the Body” in delivering the lesson. Table reveals that
students’ performance at post-test is higher than the performance at pre-test with a total gain
of 6.75 with the total percentage of 78.55% where it reached the target of at least 75%
performance level of the students after the evaluation. Moreover, the table reveals that the
difference between pre-test and post-test is extremely statistically significant. Therefore, it
can be concluded that the instructional material “Warriors of the Body” was effective and that
the students gain more knowledge after using the material.
b. Insights and thoughts of the learners in using Warriors of the Body as
instructional materials in learning Circulatory and Respiratory Systems
To identify the insights and thoughts of learners in utilizing “warriors of the Body” as
instructional material in teaching Circulatory and Respiratory Systems, a survey was
also conducted. This provides a valuable opportunity to validate the result of the pre-
test and post-test which will help to interpret data more intensively.
The following are noted as significant insights and thoughts from the learners in
using Warriors of the Body.
Learners’ Reflection on Warriors of the Body
How learners felt using Warriors of the Body
“I was happy because I enjoyed answering while I am learning”
“I was amazed because “Warriors of the Body” used superheroes where students
are very familiar with.”
“I was inspired, because there was a thrill and I enjoyed learning the different parts
of the body because of the characters in the “Warriors of the Body.”
“I was amazed and goosebumps, because the masterpiece helps my imagination
and enjoyable to answer.”
How learners learned in using Warriors of the Body
“I understood the topic more easily because it is inspiring and enjoying while
answering the activities.”
“I understood it easily because its pressure-free because I’m just reading a comic
while learning.”
“It is easier to answer and inspiring to learn because of the superheroes made me
enjoy the activities.”
“It is easy to understand the topic using Warriors of the Body.”
“It is easy to understand because in every mission, there are activities that can
easily to understand and answer.”
“I learned to answer the activities on my own, because it’s easy to understand, so
my performance in Science increased.”
“It's easy for me to answer because it's more fun in learning.”
What other suggestions they want their academic performance in Science?
“ Create more instructional like this because it really help students learn while
enjoying.”
“Make more materials that can boost the students’ performance and participation
in class.”
“Publish in books, so more students can read and learn to gain more knowledge in
Science.”
c. Learning theories/approaches considered in crafting the
strategies/techniques in the implementation of this SIM.
The following are the learning theories/approaches considered in crafting the
Strategies/techniques in the implementation of the SIM.
The study is anchored on the theories and principles of Constructivist Theory. The
Constructivist Theory of Jerome Bruner defines learning as an active process in
which learners construct new ideas or concepts based upon their current/past
knowledge. The learner selects and transforms information, construct hypotheses,
and makes decisions, relying on the cognitive structure. Cognitive structure (i.e.,
schema, mental models) provides meaning and organization to experiences and
allows the individual to “go beyond the information given”. Bruner emphasized three
major principles: readiness, spiral organization and extrapolation.
The different parts of the Strategic Intervention Materials fit perfectly in this theory.
The Guide Card on the SIMs provides the preview of what the students will learn,
what task needs to be accomplished and what concept to learn. It also contains
images and specific information needed by the students to complete the activities
found in the Activity Card. The Activity Card provides all the activity starting with the
easiest to increasing level of complexity. Lastly, the third principle applies to the
Enrichment Card that provides opportunities for the students to apply what they have
learned to other subject areas or new contexts.
In the study of Dahar (2011) entitled "Effect of the Availability and the Use of
Instructional Material on Academic Performance of Students in Punjab Pakistan" he
state that instructional materials play a very important role in the teaching - learning
process. He's study revealed that instructional materials has a strong STRATEGIC
INTERVENTION MATERIALS impact in the academic performance of the students,
furthermore, making it available to the students every time contributes to successful
learning.
d. Personal action plan may be proposed to sustain the positive
impact of the SIM toward student learning outcomes
1. utilize Warriors of the Body in teaching and learning the Respiratory and
Circulatory Systems in Grade 9 students not only in our school but also in the
district, division, and region;
2. use strategic instructional material to improve students’ academic
performance in the science curriculum; and
1. The study revealed that the use of Strategic Intervention Material (SIM)
particularly the “Warriors of the Body” , enhances the academic performance
of the students in Science.
2. The Warriors of the Body had a positive impact on meaningful and enjoyable
learning experiences of the learners in enhancing their academic performance
in Science.
4. Utilize Warriors of the Body in teaching and learning the Respiratory and
Circulatory Systems.
6. Future researchers may use this study as a reference for further study on
Strategic Intervention/Instructional Material that were not explored in this
study.
