9. WEATHER DATA
9.1. Introduction
The weather files distributed with TRNSYS 16 are organized in directories according to the data
sources. Currently there are two data sources:
• The US-TMY2 data sets from NREL (redistributed with NREL's permission). The dataset
includes 237 locations in the US (contiguous states + Alaska and Hawaii), and 2 files for
Puerto-Rico and Guam.
• Selected worldwide stations from Meteonorm (distributed under license from Meteotest).
More than 1000 locations are included, in more than 150 countries.
More details on the datasets and their owners are given in the next sections.
The TMY2 data sets for the US and their manual were produced by the
National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL's) Analytic Studies Division
under the Resource Assessment Program, which is funded and monitored by the
U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Solar Energy Conversion.
The use of weather files distributed with TRNSYS implies the acceptance of the above-mentioned
license agreement.

TRNSYS 16 – Weather Data
9.2.1. Introduction
The "Weather\US-TMY2" directory contains the data files for the typical meteorological year
(TMY) data sets derived from the 1961-1990 National Solar Radiation Data Base (NSRDB). The
data set is known as "TMY2" to distinguish it from the earlier TMY data set derived from the 1952-
1975 SOLMET/ERSATZ data base.
The TMY2s are data sets of hourly values of solar radiation and meteorological elements for a 1-
year period. Their intended use is for computer simulations of solar energy conversion systems
and building systems to facilitate performance comparisons of different system types,
configurations, and locations in the United States and its territories. Because they represent
typical rather than extreme conditions, they are not suited for designing systems to meet the
worst-case conditions occurring at a location.
The TMY2 data sets and manual were produced by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's
(NREL's) Analytic Studies Division under the Resource Assessment Program, which is funded
and monitored by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Solar Energy Conversion.
The TMY2 data are included in the TRNSYS 16 distribution with NREL's permission. They can
also be downloaded from NREL's Renewable Resource Data Center (http://rredc.nrel.gov). For
more information, TRNSYS users can check the references mentioned at the end of this chapter
(Marion, 1995; Marion and Urban, 1995a and 1995b).
With:
US The location is in the United States (all TMY 2 files from the NSRDB database are in
the US)
ST The 2-letter code for the State (e.g. WI = Wisconsin)
Location name of the city or weather station (e.g. Madison)
nnnnn Weather Bureau Army Navy (WBAN) Identification Number (e.g. 14837 for Madison,
WI)
.tm2 The files follow the TMY2 format which can be read by Type 89 and Type 109

9.3.1. Introduction
The data file distributed with TRNSYS 16 that were generated using Meteonorm are distributed
under license from Meteotest. All files were generated using default options in Meteonorm V
5.0.13. The "TMY2" output format is used because it is easily read by Type 89 and Type109.

TRNSYS 16 – Weather Data
• This directory includes all weather data files for Northern America (including Mexico).
Note that no weather data files are given for the US. Users should use the US-TMY2 data
files for locations in the US (contiguous states + Alaska), Puerto-Rico and Guam.
Available stations are listed in the following sections. The filenames have the following format:
With:
CC ISO-3266 2-letter country code
Note that some islands belonging to other countries have their own code (e.g. RE for
La Réunion) while others use the country code of the "mainland" (e.g. ES for the
Spanish island of Gran Canaria)
ST The 2-letter code for the State if relevant (Canada only)
Location name of the city or weather station (e.g. "Stuttgart", or " Abidjan-Airp")
nnnnn World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Identification Number of the location (if
relevant)
.tm2 The files follow the TMY2 format which can be read by Type 89 and Type 109
