Epic Egg Drop 2019

Technological design Saves Lives!! summarizes the technological design process used to develop solutions to problems. It provides an example of students designing Extreme Gravity Game devices to safely allow skydiving without injury. The document outlines the 4 steps of the process: 1) identifying the problem, 2) designing solutions while considering limiting factors, 3) implementing a design through building and testing, and 4) evaluating if the solution worked and identifying areas for improvement. The assignment requires students to follow these steps to develop their own EGG devices for protecting eggs dropped from heights.

Technological design Saves Lives!!

What do shovels, cell phones, and heart monitors all have in common?
They are inventions created to make our lives better and easier! See, people invent
things to solve our problems. The process of designing objects or processes for our
benefit is called TECHNICAL DESIGN. This is a four-step process.

Problem
Solution Design Implementation Evaluation
Identification

Me and my peeps want to find a safe way to go sky diving. Why should we be excluded
from extreme sports? We need your help to design some Extreme Gravity Game
(E.G.G.) devices so that we can sky dive without getting scrambled! Let’s go through
the process of technological design so that we come up with a way to help me and my
peeps safely sky dive.

STEP 1: PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

So what’s the problem?

STEP 2: SOLUTION DESIGN

Here we have to think of possible designs to solve our problem. Before we do that, we
have to know the factors that we have to consider. So here they are!!

_________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________
Objective: Construct a device that is the lightest mass possible, YET durable enough to
protect an egg dropped from an 8ft ladder.

Materials: You may use any materials you have at your house (recycled items). You are
NOT required to purchase materials. Please no Styrofoam.

Rules:

1. Device can be any shape NO LARGER than a 6 in. by 6 in.

2. Leave an opening in the device to insert the egg in class (teacher provides
eggs)
3. Name and Block must be visible on the project at all times
4. No Food Products of any sort!!! No Styrofoam!!
5. No ready-made containers (Cardboard Box, Tupperware, Ziploc, Glad)!

Instructions: Discuss ideas for an E.G.G. device prototype

What are your ideas about a solution to this problem?

_______________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________

Make a sketch of your top 2 models for your device in the space below. Include
materials you are using, how much of these materials, and location for egg in model.
Ok. Time to build your model! Remember to build the lightest model possible while following all of the rules!
Test your model at home. TO PROTECT YOUR PRODUCT, PLACE THE RAW EGG IN A PLASTIC BAGGIE IN CASE IT
BREAKS DURING YOUR TEST AT HOME. Use adult supervision. Follow the chart below.

Now that you are done with constructing your model, are there any problems with the design of your model?

School-wide Competition: Your device will be dropped from an 8 ft. ladder.

1. What is the mass of your device? __________________________
2. Rank the success of your device (Grade A, B, or C - refer to the chart above). __________
STEP 4: EVALUATION
Here we have to decide if your EGG product solves the problem! Will
your device help me and my buddies not crack our melons on the
concrete as we sky dive off an 8ft ladder? To make sure, I have some
questions for you.
1. Does the EGG design solve the problem? EXPLAIN!!
_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
2. What are 2 good (positive) and 2 bad (negative) things about the
design?
_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
3. How can your design be improved? If not, why??
_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
Now that we have gone through the process of technological design, it’s
time to put our product on the market!! But wait…What were the steps
of technological design again? List them below.

REFLECTION (2 paragraphs minimum)
1. Reflect (think) about the process of Technological Design.
Describe how your egg drop project followed the steps of the
Technological Design process. Comment about which steps
were most difficult to do. Please be specific!
2. Discuss your feelings about this project (did you enjoy it or not)
and any suggestions to improve.

TECHNOLOGICAL DESIGN PROCESS PROJECT

Science is the process of learning about the natural world by asking questions and trying to find the answers to those
questions. Technology applies scientific knowledge in order to develop a solution to a problem or create a product to help meet
human needs. Technology (this is anything that make life easier) is usually developed because there is a need or a problem that
needs to be solved. We will be reviewing these steps over the next 5 days. Steps in the technological design process include:

1. Identifying a problem or need (10 Points)

 Research and gather information on what is already known about the problem or need

2. Designing a solution or a product (35 Points)

 Generate ideas on possible solutions or products (At least 2 designs and pick the best one)
 Evaluate the factors that will limit or restrict the solution or product design (on both designs)
 Determine the trade-offs of the solutions or products (what must be given up in order to create the solution or product)
on both designs.
3. Implementing the design (35 Points)
 Build and test (at home!) the solution or product
 Identify any problems with the solution or product
 If necessary, redesign the solution or product to eliminate any problems in the design
 Conduct a final test at school in the lab

4. Evaluating the solution or the product (20 Points) (this part will be done in class as a lab)
 Determine if the solution or product solved the problem
 Identify the pros and cons of the solution or product

***Your assignment
– You will be designing an Extreme Gravity Game (E.G.G.) device that’s purpose is to allow us to sky dive without getting
scrambled!
– You will follow the Technological design Process in all steps (steps 1-2, and first ½ of 3 at home) and you will test and
evaluate your results for your product (second half of step 3-all of 4 inside the classroom).
– Please remember cost, environmental impact, and availability of materials is very important when designing your
product (this is a money making business venture!)
– Be constructed from available raw materials rather than be a readymade container
– Cannot be larger than a 6in. by 6in.
– Follow safety guidelines
– Turn in your project early and gain an extra 5 points!

I am aware of the project my child has been assigned for science class and the due date for this project.
______ My child has chosen to work independently on this project
______ I understand this is an at-home project
