IME Micro Project

This document provides details about a project on types of pressure being conducted by engineering students. It discusses different types of pressure measurements including absolute pressure, gauge pressure, vacuum pressure and atmospheric pressure. The project aims to make pressure measurement easy and simple. The proposed methodology involves understanding how absolute pressure, gauge pressure and differential pressure are defined. The output will be gaining knowledge about pressure measurements that can be used across industries for manufacturing processes and quality control.

PART A –Micro-Project Proposal

“TYPES OF PRESSURE ”

1.0. Brief Introduction

Introduction to pressure measurement. Pressure is defined as the force per area that can
be exerted by a liquid, gas or vapor etc. on a given surface. The applied pressure can be
measured as absolute, gauge or differential pressure.

2.0. Micro project Aim

In addition to directly measuring pressure values, pressure measurements can be used to
determine or infer flow rates, fluid levels, product density, and other parameters.

3.0 Intended Course Outcomes

Across various industries, measuring the pressure of a substance is an integral part of the
manufacturing process. Obtaining accurate and meaningful data is vital in determining the
quality and consistency of the product. For these reasons, accurate sensors are critical in
receiving this information.

4.0 Literature Review

Guage pressure :
The gauge pressure is defined as the difference between an absolute pressure (Pabs) and the
prevailing atmospheric pressure (Pamb).

Absolute pressure:
Absolute pressure is a pressure that is relative to the zero pressure in the empty, air-free space of the
universe. This reference pressure is the ideal or absolute vacuum. It is denoted with the subscript
“abs”: Pabs.

Vaccum pressure:
Vacuum is simply a pressure that is less than the surrounding atmospheric pressure. Essentially it is
a difference in pressure, or differential, that can be used to do work. Since vacuum is by
definition a negative pressure, the common terminology of high-vacuum and low-vacuum can
be confusing.
Atmospheric pressure:
The air around you has weight, and it presses against everything it touches. That pressure is called
atmospheric pressure, or air pressure. It is the force exerted on a surface by the air above it as gravity
pulls it to Earth. Atmospheric pressure is commonly measured with a barometer.

5.0. Proposed Methodology

1. Absolute pressure is zero-referenced against a perfect vacuum, using an absolute scale, so it is

equal to gauge pressure plus atmospheric pressure.
2. Gauge pressure is zero-referenced against ambient air pressure, so it is equal to absolute
pressure minus atmospheric pressure.
3. Differential pressure is the difference in pressure between two points.

6.0. Outputs of Micro-Project

1. It make pressure measurement easy and simple.

7.0 Conclusion
. A pressure gauge is a method for measuring fluid, gas, water, or steam intensity in a pressure
powered machine to ensure there are no leaks or pressure changes that would affect the
performance of the systems
