M500 How To Initialize Without Losing ABS Home Position

This document provides instructions for reinitializing a Mitsubishi M500 control without losing the absolute home positions that are present on dogless machines. The procedure involves: 1) Backing up all memory boards using a flash ROM copy tool. 2) Disconnecting the SH21 cable during reinitialization. 3) Dumping the backed up memory back into the control after reinitialization is complete. 4) Power cycling and reconnecting the SH21 cable to restore the home positions.

Subject: Reinitializing a 500 series control without losing the absolute
home position settings, which are present on dogless type
machines.

Use the following procedure to ensure that you won’t lose your home
position settings when reinitializing a control:

1) Use the flash ROM copy tool to copy all the memory boards in the
NC. (Flash ROM memory backup)

2) Power off.

3) Pull off the SH21 cable going into the MCU board of the NC.

4) Perform the normal reinitialization procedure for a 500 series control.

5) When you are finished reinitializing and are ready to get the machine
back up to normal, perform the following:

1) Flip dip switch 2 on (E2ROM block).

2) Dump all of the Flash ROM saved memory back into the NC.
3) Once all memory has been loaded back into the NC, set the base
spec parameter eerom to a 0.
4) Power off. Set dip switch 2 back to off and re-connect the SH21
cable. Power on.

Note: It has been documented that for some reason, MHI machines with 4th
axis rotary tables, no matter what will lose their home position after a
reinitialization. These are the only ways that the home positions can be lost
in the 1st place:
1) disconnecting the encoder from the motor long enough for the super cap
in the encoder to discharge
2) disconnecting the abs. pos. battery backup module from the nc/amplifier
daisy chain
3) setting zeros to the abson parameter, and
4) swapping out the encoder
5) reinitializing.
