CUPP Calculator – V12

By Cesar Alonso (Cesaral Magic)

Introduction

The CUPP Calculator is another way in which the magician can control the CUPP for the Lotto
effect. The beauty of this tool is that it allows a hands free lotto presentation as the spectator
can do it all. You will just need to find a justification for using the calculator in the lotto
effect…, If the presentation is correct, then it will be difficult to associate the calculator App
with the fact of printing a lotto ticket.

The calculator is like the standard Android calculator so it will not look weird to the audience
member that uses it.

Install the App following the instructions given by Cesaral Magic and then run it by pressing the
icon:

Using the calculator

The calculator is like the standard calculator so you can use it as the normal one. If you slide
with your finger the vertical cyan slot to the left, then you will be able to access other
functions of the calculator. These functions will also appear if you place the mobile phone in
landscape mode.

Connecting the calculator to the CUPP

If you press with a finger for 3 seconds on the results

display (marked with a red ellipse in the picture at the
right) you will access the secret page.
-
You can also press the button “ “ three times in a row
to access the secret page.

Results display (marked in red)

Secret page
Being in the secret page, you can press the button “Look for CUPP” first…and after a few
seconds you will see a list of Bluetooth devices and you will need to select the one that says
“CUPP…”. If the connection is successful the calculator will appear again and a green dot will
appear at the upper left corner of the results window as show here:

If you go back to the secret page you will be able to monitor the signal strength and configure
some important aspects.

Being in the secret page, you can select the number of numbers that will be accumulated in the
capture buffer before the App sends to the CUPP the print order. By default this number is “6”
as most of the lottos of the world have 6 numbers, but you can change this number easily
touching the number. If you do this, a list will appear and you will be able to select other
values. The selection will be remembered by the App.

In the upper right corner of the secret page you can see a big point, which can be red or green.
The green point means that the App is connected to the CUPP, and the number inside is the
strength of the Bluetooth connection (from “1” to “10” which is the best number)

The number in blue under the green point is the “heart beat”. This is a running number that the
CUPP sends every second and allows the magician to know that both devices are exchanging
data successfully.

Being in the secret page, you can mark if you wish the “Auto print” check box. The calculator’s
App has two operation modes to control the CUPP: a Manual Mode and an Automatic Mode
(“Auto print” check box selected).

There are two more input fields in the secret page: The Force number field and the Trigger
number field. This calculator does more than controlling the CUPP!

The trigger input field has one number that when entered in the App will activate the result
force once the “=” button is pressed for the first time and a division operation is involved. The
force field stores the number to force.

Let’s see this how this works with an example:

The trigger input field has “1234”

The force field has “98765”. You can have any number of digits in this field, but normally you
will have 6 or less.
The result of one operation is 674
The magician ask the audience member to divide the result n the calculator by 1234 (the trigger
number)

The real division would be: 674/1234= 0,5461912

The number shown by the App will be 0,54698765

As you can see the five last numbers (only those ones) are really forced! The good thing of this
forcing method is that nobody will pay much attention to the accuracy of the last decimals. I
invented this force method back in 2002 with my Cesaral PC Mental Mind Calculator, and later I
added it to the Cesaral Ultimate Magic Calculator.

We will see later how to include this in a nice presentation.

CUPP control modes

The CUPP can be managed in two ways: in Manual Mode and in Automatic mode. You can select

this in the secret page with this check box:

In the Manual Mode the process is:

1) Some numbers are typed and added by an audience member.

2) The magician takes the App when those numbers have been added and access the
secret page pressing 3 seconds in the results display. You can also activate this screen pressing
the minus button three times in a row.

3) Now the magician can see the list of

selected numbers, can edit them if he needs to, and
can send the numbers to the CUPP pressing the
button “Send to CUPP”. You can see this secret page
in the picture at the right, once some numbers have
been captured.

Once the numbers have been printed by the

CUPP, the App will show the result if it was
successful.

The green point means that the App is

connected to the CUPP, and the number inside is
the strength of the Bluetooth connection (from “1”
to “10” which is the best number)

The number in blue under the green point is

the heart beat. This is a number that the CUPP
sends every second and allows the magician to know
that both devices are exchanging data successfully.

Pressing the gear blue icon you can access the

configuration parameters: working mode (manual or
auto), disconnect from the CUPP and connect to
another CUPP, change the force numbers, etc.

In the Automatic Mode (“Auto print” check box selected in the connection page) the process is:

1) Some numbers are typed and added by an audience member.

2) When the last number is typed and the spectator types a “+” or a “=” to get the
result, the App will send the numbers to the CUPP automatically. The number of numbers
captured before sending the print order automatically are selected in the “Lotto numbers”
field.

The calculator behaves as a normal calculator until the “+” button is pressed three times in a
row. When the magician does this, a black box will appear at the upper left corner of the
results display as shown in the red circle:

When this happens the calculator enters the capture mode in which the numbers added are also
captured for the set of numbers that will be sent later (manually or automatically according to
the status of the mentioned check box) to the CUPP. When the numbers are sent to the CUPP,
this capture mode is released and you will need to type again three “+” in a row to activate it
again (which is unlikely to happen in a real performance).

The capture mode allows the magician to activate the data capture when needed…for example
after the calculator has been examined (in my opinion this is not necessary, but just in case…).
Also, when the capture mode is active, the buffer of captured numbers is cleared and gets
ready to receive new numbers.

Once the numbers have been printed successfully the

black dot at the upper left corner will turn green and
the magician can be sure that the printing was done
successfully.

If you access the secret page, there will be a text that

says “OK Lotto printed”

Working routine example

How to justify the use of the Android Calculator App? Here is my take on this: First a good but
weaker effect, and to finish the Lotto effect! The order is important…leave the strongest part
until the end.

1) First effect presentation:

The magician shows a big board and tells that there is a numeric prediction on the other side.
He leaves the board apart so that nobody can access it. He tells that it is really difficult to
name a random number because the one that names it is always conditioned by his age,
thoughts, moment, etc. But the magician knows a method to reach a truly random number, and
he will experiment with it. He also shows a little box with a present for the audience member.
The magician gives a calculator (in an Android device) to an audience member and asks him to
select randomly 6 more audience members. He will have to use the calculator to add 6 numbers
(from 1 to 50) from those random selected audience members. Once the numbers are named
and added by the audience member that has the calculator (at this moment the CUPP has
received the numbers and printed the Lotto ticket in the auto working mode was selected), the
magician says “This is quite a random number but not so random as the numbers named are
between 1 and 50. Let’s reach a truly random number based on the result. Divide please the
result by….for example….”34215”. You agree with me that the result will be really random this
time. Let’s see the result…oh it is a big number with decimals…so lets take just the last 5
decimals of the result. Is there any doubt? What was the result? Please draw the result in the
front part of the board in which I wrote my prediction.“ When this has been done, the
magician ask the audience member to turn over the board, and both numbers match!

2) Second effect presentation:

The magician says “is there any doubt that the numbers were really random and we even tried
to get a more weird result? Please open that box and reach inside. You will find a
paper…something that I would like you to take and describe”. The audience member takes the
paper and says that it is a lotto ticket. “Could you please name in a loud voice the numbers of
the ticket?” The numbers are named and they match the numbers selected in the first effect!!!

The process could be this:

Before the effect starts:

1) Start the calculator and access the secret page pressing the results display for 3 seconds
2) Select the lotto numbers to capture, trigger number, force number, and working mode.
This data will remain in the memory for future uses.
3) Connect to the CUPP and check the connection signal strength. Select the proper position
and distance to the CUPP

The effect starts (if the automatic working mode was selected):

1) Let the spectator try the calculator and be familiarized with it

2) Take back the calculator and press “+” three times in a row to activate the capture mode
3) Press “x” the times in a row to activate the force
4) Give the calculator to the spectator and as him to add 6 numbers and to get the result
5) Have a look at the calculator and check that the upper left corner dot turned green (the
print in the CUPP was done!)
6) Now tell the story about how to get a more random number and as the spectator to
divide the number in the display by the trigger number. The calculator will force the
result and the black dot at the lower left corner will disappear.

The effect starts (if the manual mode was selected):

1) Let the spectator try the calculator and be familiarized with it

2) Take back the calculator and press “+” three times in a row to activate the capture mode
3) Press “x” the times in a row to activate the force
4) Give the calculator to the spectator and as him to add 6 numbers and to get the result
5) Take the calculator and access the secret page. Check the numbers and send them to the
CUPP. You will get the message that the numbers were printed.
6) Go back to the calculator display pressing the button “Go back” and give the calculator
to the audience member.
7) Now tell the story about how to get a more random number and as the spectator to
divide the number in the display by the trigger number. The calculator will force the
result and the black dot at the lower left corner will disappear.

Summary of commands
1) Access to secret page: press with a finger for 3 seconds on the results display or press the
-
button “ “ three times in a row.

2) Enter the lotto capture mode pressing the calculator’s “+” button three times in a row

3) Enter the partial force mode pressing the calculator’s “X” button three times in a row. You
can use this calculator as a force calculator…
