1. A bank reconciliation explains the difference between a bank balance and the company's records, helps identify cash errors, and should be done by someone not involved with cash handling. 2. If the bank balance is more than the company's records, there must be deposits in transit, outstanding checks, or bank charges not recorded by the company. 3. If the company's records show a higher balance than the bank, there must be deposits credited by the bank but not recorded by the company, deposits in transit, or outstanding checks.
