Functional description
The bag is attached manually after which the outer jaw can be activated by means of a two-hand safety
control. This secures the bag between the outer jaw and bag grip rubber. Operation is monitored by the
bag holder switch which is mounted on the clamp stop. This ensures that bag filling does not commence
until the attached and is firmly clamped.
When the bag is in position, the bag holder limit switch activates and signals “ready for discharge” to the
weigher controller. After a delay (Clamps Timer), the clamp opens automatically when the bag is full.
Control elements
Once the bag has been inserted in the clamp, the outer jaw can be opened with the two-handed safety
control by operating the two limit switches (shown as item [1] in the drawing below) at the same time.

Operation
Initial start-up
1. Ensure that an air supply of approximately 6 bar is available.
2. Check that the manual override controls on the solenoid control valves are in the OFF
position and the screw slot is horizontal.
3. If a pneumatic option is fitted, set its air pressure regulator to between 5 and 6 bar.
4. Switch on the power to the weighing system. This will activate the bag holder air supply
solenoid valve which will pressurize the bag holder pneumatic system.
Attaching a bag
1. Place a bag accurately on the clamp and simultaneously activate the two bag holder limit
switches (items [1] on the diagram below) with both hands.
2. Check that the clamp jaws extend to grip the bag on the inside.
3. Once this has been done, the bag holder limit switch will detect that a bag is clamped in
the correct position and will signal “ready for discharge” to the weigher controller.
4. After a [programmable] delay the clamp jaws retract releasing the bag which will drop onto
the conveyor.

19
For the most-part, it is not necessary to disassemble parts during maintenance inspections and work.
General cleaning
The machine should be cleaned on a regular basis with the appropriate materials – brush, dry cloth,
compressed air, etc.
During general cleaning critical parts of the machine should be checked for indications of potential
problems – for example signs of air leakage from the air cylinder, etc.
Remember to also clean the floor areas around the machine to prevent people and equipment from
slipping causing injury or damage.
Rod ends
All rod ends must be greased with a Li-saponified grease whenever necessary.
Pneumatic cylinders
In principle, all pneumatic cylinders are maintenance-free.
However, a visual check for leakage especially of the rod gasket should be carried out regularly.
(Leakages can often be detected by listening for “leakage whistles”). If necessary, replace the gasket or
the whole cylinder (especially necessary for cylinders of 25mm diameter).
Maintenance schedule
It is important that a maintenance scheduled be programmed, and the following schedule is
recommended as a minimum maintenance schedule:

FAULT DIAGNOSIS
___________________________________________________________________________________
Version #1 – February 2012
21
Fault diagnosis
Although the NBB Bag Holder is a relatively simple machine, faults may arise from time to time and
some guidance on fault diagnosis is useful. The most common areas to check are as follows:
Additional checks
Air cylinder
If the air cylinder continues to exhaust air while the piston is at either end of its stroke (that is, with the
bag clamps open or closed) it will be necessary to replace the piston cup or seal at the end from which
the leak occurs.
Generally, this type of air leak can be heard and the position of the leak can be confirmed by holding a
finger over the exhaust port on the foot valve and feeling the stream of air.
Since replacement will require the dismantling of the cylinder, it is recommended that all seals on the air
cylinder are replaced at the same time.
Hand switches
If the bag clamps do not open or close, check the two hand switches for correct operation. Check that
the necessary electrical connections make proper contact.. If the switches are faulty it will be necessary
to replace them.
WARNING!
In the case of faulty electrical contact, ensure that the equipment cannot start to
operate whilst a maintenance engineer is correcting the problem. Ensure that the air
supply is SWITCHED OFF to prevent problems.
If the pressure reading at the regulator drops and there is no leakage in the system, the regulator should
be replaced.
If the regulator is operating correctly but there is still a lack of air in the system, the filter should be
removed, examined and either cleaned or replaced as appropriate.
Dirty air near the input of the compressor will result in dirt entering the filter system which could become
blocked quickly. The compressor inlet should have access to clean air at all times.
General
Hoses, clamps, pipe fillings etc should all be checked at regular intervals for damage and loosening and
should be replaced or retightened as appropriate.
