2021 Sda F5 June Test 1

Tshepo set up an experiment to investigate the expansion of gases. When he warms the flask with his hands, the level of water in the inverted capillary tube will rise. This is because warming the air in the flask causes it to expand, increasing the pressure and pushing the water up the tube. Thermal expansion has uses like in rivets to join metal sheets and allowing for gaps in railway tracks for the metal to expand on hot days.
