TANKS FOR
UND STORAGE
FP.
FUTURE PIPE NOUSTRE
Complete Pipe System SolutionsFiberglass (GRP) storage tanks mean
lower total cost and greater dependabil-
ity over the life of your storage system.
Without maintenance.
There's one basic difference between
Future Pipe Fiberglass underground
tanks and tanks made from steel.
Fiberglass tanks won't corrode.
A Fiberglass underground tank will last
the life of most facilities without corro-
sion-caused leaks or failures.
Corrosion-caused replacement costs
are eliminated, as are periodic corrosion
testing procedures, and the additional
expense and concern over environmen-
tal problems due to leakage.

Long Life
Fiberglass underground GRP storage tanks can be used to store
gasoline, aviation fuel, gasohol (20% gasoline and 10% ethanol
mixture), jet fuel, diesel fuel, potable water or waste water
atambient underg ound temperature, orfuelcil at temperatures:
Not to excaed 150°F. Tanks to be used to store any other mate-
Fias should be cleared with Future Pipe Ind. before purchase
and installation.
Fiberglass tanks are impervious to the effects of extemal cor-
rosion, Because they will not leak due to corrosion, Fibergiass
underground tanks eliminate worries over pollution ang relatec
environmental problems.
Corrosion is caused by a direct current discharge from under-
{ground stee! tanks. There are two sources of corrosion of stee!
tarks: galvanic action and stray electrical currents,
Gavaric action is an electrical cell phenomeron-which pro-
ues current. It'S caused by such things as dissimilar metal
varying steel tank surface conditions and non-hemogenous
backfil, These conditions even vary within a single installation
so that when testing soil resistivity, several tests must be made
at different points of the same site over a petiod of time, to
make the resistivity test results vald and useful. Conditions
which indicate that corrasion wil oscur from galvanic action
include: soil resistivity, soil pH, differential oxygen (different
levels of oxygen enist at cifferent points around sieel tanks), new
steal added to installation with cld stee! tanks, and anaerobic
bacteria. Other variable factors, which may contribute to corro-
sion inolude: high water table, cindess, lancfil, salts, fertilizers
and septic tanks.
Stray electrical currents are man-made. Through grounding,
these man-made electrical curents retuin to their source, tak-
ing the path of least resistance. The current will tavel along
Underground steel tanks, taking metal ions from the tank as the
current discharges or leaves the tank, resulting in corrosion
Underground steel tanks are vulnerable to stray electrical cur
rent corrosion, even with wall-designed external protecton.
‘There is no steal tank protective system that's eifecive aganst
stray current corrosion,
Intemal corrosion, "contributing 16 many steel tank lecks and
failures, is also eliminated with Fiberglass underground tanks.
Extamal protection will do nothing ‘0 prevent internal corro-
sion. Factors which contribute 10 internal corrosion include:
condensation from the product, oxygen, formation and depos-
ition of sludge, climatic conditions, and the presence of bac-
teria
ie
\ \Maintenance Free
Because Fiberglass tanks are not susceptible to corrosion,
they're maintenance free. There's no need for periodic testing,
record keeping or replacement of cathodic protection sytems.
You save the difference in time, money and concern over the
service life of the tank and avoid potential financial liciltes.
Fiberglass underground tanks are made from polyester resins
reinforced with glass fiver. Petroleum products stored in
Fiberglass tanks may be easily changed, without affecting
either the tank, or the new product. Common additives in
stored products will not change or damage tanks.
Strong and Durable
Prooory instaled, Fibergass tarks ara strong enough to with-
stand constant traffic from the heaviest over-the-road vehicle
(H-20 axle loads - 14.500 Ke/axé).
Fiberglass underground tanks wore designed to meet specific
Performance criteria in dry or fully flooded holes when properiy
installed. An empty tank may be installed (with specified back-
fll Completely around tank) with 2 meters of water over the tank
top with a 2:1 safety factor against external hydrestatic pres-
sure,
All tanks must be vented, as tanks are designed for operation
at atmospheric pressure only, except for use with vapor recov-
fry systems provided the pressure or vacuum does not exceed
1 psi. Fiberglass tanks are designed for liquids with a specific
gravity up to 1:1
Safe for Drinking Water Storage
Future Pipe underground tanks are manufactured from Fiber-
glass (GRP) laminate certfied by the Water Research Council
(Wo) in the UK.
Economical
Fiberglass underground tanks offer incomparable performance
benefits combined with quick, easy installaton.
The performance of a Fiberglass underground tank means sub-
stantial savings over the life of the installation, compared to a
steel tank. Fiberglass tanks mean no corrosion, no mainte~
ance and no additional expense for tank replacement. In
short, Foerglass underground storage tanks are your lowest
cost tanks

GRP underground Storage Tank:
Fiberglass underground tanks must be installed according to
ese instructions end NFPA 30 and 31. Loca codes may apply
and should be consulted. Failure to folow these installation
instructions will void the warranty ang may resultin tank failure.
Proper installation of Fiberglass underground tanks is required
to prevent tank damage and to insure long-term corrosion
resistant service. Itis imparativo te road, understandand folow
the instructions below.
‘The presence of a Future Pipe representative at the job site
does not relieve the contractor of his responsbilty to flow the
published instalation instructions, Any variances to the pub-
ished instalation instruction must be approved by Future Pipe
in woting prior to the tank insiallation
1) Handling
Liting Tanks
While iting tanks use suitable nylon straps equaly spaced
along the length of the tank. Guide the tanks with guide ropes.
(D0 NOT STAND ON TANK WHILE TANK IS BEING LIFTED,
00 NOT ROLL OR DROP TANK. Only us lifting equipment to
move tanks, Capacity of iting equipment must be checked
before moving tanks. Set tanks on smooth ground, free of
rocks and foreign cbjects and recheck
2) Bed and Backfill

7.1 for quality and soundness. The backfill should not have
‘more than 3% passing a # 8 sieve, The dry gravel density must
be a minimum of 95 pounds per cubic foot
Note: You should require your backfil supplier to certify that
the backfill meets ths spectfication
3) Visual Air/Soap Testing
Before installing tanks, remove fing plugs, appy pipe dope
and then tighten fitng plugs. Pressure test 1600 mm through
2800 mm diameter tanks to5 psi. Soap the entire tank and ft-
tings. The air tests is of Ite value without soaping ard a care-
ful visual inspection for bubbles. Test at least 30 minutes to
tenaure there are no leaks es indicates by soap buboles or @
drop in pressure. Do not approach endcaps or manways while
tanks are under pressure, Before backfilling to grade, FPI rex
commends a § psi ai/soap test on all nisted piping conned
tions end unusec fittings
4) Hole Size
Stable walls (all size tanks)
In stable soil conditions the
hole must de large enough to
allow a minimum of 450 mm
600 mm preferred) between
adjacent tanks and 450 mm
600 mm preferred) between
the tank sides and ends ard
the banks of the hole.
Unstable walls (all size tanks)
In muck, bog, peat, swamp or
landill type areas where the
soil is soft, a larger hole is
required to support tanks. In
these types of conditions the
holes must be large enough to
allow a minimum of 1/2 the
tank diameter from ends and
sides of tanks to hole wals.
Unstable soils are defined as those soils having less than 0.37,
Kgicm® cohesion as calculated from an unconfined compres-
sion test; or soils with an ultimate bearing capacity of ess than
Unstable soils may require a reinforced concrete slab under
tank for support.
For unstable soils with less than 0.12 Kg/cm? cohesion or with
an ultimate bearing capecity of less than 0.25 Ka/cm, a filter
fabric hole liner is recommended to prevent backfill migration.
Refer to Section 6,5) Burial Depth and Cover
‘The tank hole must be deep enough to allow a minimum of 300,
mm required beckfil bed over the hole bottom or concrete
slab,
It the total burial depth from tank top is greater then 60% of the
tank diameter, anchoring the tanks is not required. (ee Sec:

6) Filter Fabric - Wet Hole Liner
It ig the responsibilty of the tank owner or his technical repre:
sentative to determine i fiter fabric is appropriate for a specific
tank instalation. Our experience indicates that if all the other
instalation insituctions are carelully folowed, the use of filter
fabric is not essential
Filter fabric prevents the migration of pea gravel with native
soil it helps to maintain the integrity ane stability of the backfil
material. Future Pipe recommends the use of fier fabric for tha
following types of installations:
1. Tidel conditions o: areas subjected to frequent changing
ground water ives.
2. Unstable soils (muck or landfills)
3. Water conditions with sity soi
Suitable brand name fiter fabrics are itemized below.
Manufacturer DuPont
Product TYPAR 3401 or TYPAR 3341
Marufacturer Hoechst Fibers
Product TREVIRA $1120 (hde depth less than 3m}
TREVIR $1127 (Mole depth greater than 3m)
Manufacturer Exon Geotex Tiles
Product TERRAN
Polyethylene is not considered an effective material to prevent
migration of pea gravel and natives soil; it tears and wil
degrade in 2 wet hole environment.
Installation Procedure: Line the excavation sides and bottom
with filter fabric. Overlap adjoining fabric pane's at least
300mm. Place some backtil on top of the filter faoric in anc
around the excavation permieter to hold the fabric in place.
In wet hole installation, backfil ballast is necessary to sink ano
hold the filter fabric to the bottom of the excavation.7) Installation Procedure - Dry Hole
Bed
Provide a mnimum of 300 mm level approved backfill bed (see
‘Section 1) over hole bottom or concrete slab. Set tanks on bed.
DO NOT PLACE TANKS DIRECTLY ON CONCRETE SLAB,
TiwSERS, BEAMS OR CRADLES.

a (1600 mm - 2800 mm Dia)
Use same matoriais as bedding
Place first 300 mm lift evenly
arcund tanks. From the bank or
aclacent tank top, backfil must
bbe moved complstely baneath
tark bottom, between ribs and
under enccags to fil voids to
provide necessary support. A
long handled probe can be
used 10 penetrate backill and
move t between all rbs anc at
three points under endeaps.
The backfil may be shoveled
beneath the tank. Place
another 300 mm lift of backfill
evenly around tanks. Repeat
the probing of backfil from the
bank 2r adjacent tank too,
After completion of secon it
boackfil_ can be brought to top
Of fans or grade without addi-
tional hand work. (Compaction
may be required for slab sup-
port)
This method will not work in
tight areas in_straight-walled
holes. The angle necessary to
probe the backfll under the
tank can rot be made with the
long-handied probe. Straight-
walled holes in tight areas will
require a curved probe to back-
fil under the tanks.
The curved probe is a 1.2m
section of the long handled
aluminium probe bent on a
rads to match the tank curva-
ture. A leveraging action on the
long-handled orobe creates a
pushing action under the tank
bottom,
The following procedure is the
most effective for the curved
prove:
a. After setting the tank on the
gravel bed, probe the area
tank bottom and around the
fend caps,
b. Place the frst 300mm lift of
backfil
. Prove the entire tank bot-
tom and end caps again
4. Piace the second 300mm
lift of backil
e. Switch to. straight probe
section and probe. tank
again.
‘Note: TANKS INSTALLED WITH BACKFILL TO TOP OF TANK,
BUT WITHOUT BACKFILL TO GRADE SHOULD BE COM-
PLETELY FILLED WITH WATER OR PRODUCT AS BALLAST.
1DO_NOT PLACE WATER OR PRODUCT IN TANK UNTIL
BACKFILL IS EVEN WITH TANK TOP.8) Installation Procedure — Wet Hole
A fiter fabric separator may be appropriate to prevent gravel
migration. Refer to Section 6 for details. Water level should be
mantanec at lowest practical level by using pumps with or
without a well-point systems, Prepare bed as outlined in Sec
tion 7,
Ballast
Ifthe watar can not be lowered,
you will have to ballast tanks.
Piace tarks in the hole, adding
only enough ballast to. sink
them. Ballast level in tanks
must never exceed water level
in hole during nstallaton.
While adding ballast, use only
liting cable to Keo tanks in
positions. Tanks shouldbe free
to rol sightl,
Backiiling
Distribute backfil evenly
around tanks 2s outlined in
Section 7.
9) Anchoring
itis responsibly ofthe tank owner or his technical representa-
tive to Getermine if mechanical anchoring is required fora spe-
cific ob site. Al potential sources of water (underground water
table, rain water table, rain water run-off, etc.) should be con-
sidered,
If water could enter the tank hole, Future Pipe recommends the
tanks be mechanioally anchored urless tha minimum burial
depth from tank top is as follows
Tank Minimumburied depth when
Diameter Mechanical Anchoring is Not Required
Concrete Trafic
Sleb Thickness
oO mm 150 mm
1800 mm 980 mm 790mm
2000 mm 1140 mm 1070 mm
2400 mm 1970 mm 4900 mm
2800 mm 1750 mm 41880 mm
‘At the above burial depths, the overburden directly above the
tank weighs more than the buoyancy of the empty tark with
water to grade (safety factor equals 1.2)
For burial depths where mechanical anchoring is recom-
mended, either of two commen methods can be used: a con-
crete anchor ped or deadman anchors, Both methods include
the use of anchor straps,
Strapping
Use hold-down straps, Anchor
poirts should be spaced equal
to tank diameter plus 300 mm
each sie of tark, regardless of
tankdiemeter. Anchor points at
bottom of hole must be aligned
withlocationofstrans + 25mm.
Al anchor straps must be
uniformiy tightened with
tumbuckles or come-a-longs. Straos should be snug but
cause no tank deflection.
Deflection can be detected by checking tank diameter with a
gauge stick before and ater snugging straps.
Trigle clamp the wire rope.

2400 mm 300 mm 350mm
2800 mm 300 mm 450mm
* A round cross section can be substituted it the diameter
equals cr exceeds the deadman width.
When using deadman anchors in multiple tank installations
each tank wil raquire two deadmen. f one deacman is used for
adjacent tanks it must be doubled in width. A separate anchor
point hod down device) must be provided for each strap, Hod
down devices ate incorporated with their legs anchored under
the re-bar renforcement, Spacing for these holdcown devices
is determined by the number of anchor points shown on tank
drawings.
