“Appreciating Modern and Contemporary Art”

I: INTRODUCTION
In the previous module, you have learned about the different characteristics of modern
and contemporary art, and how art can be a powerful tool in influencing social transformation in
the society. Moreover, we have explored the different ways as to how art can become an
important catalyst that synthesizes the life experiences and the ideologies of the people relative
to the status quo. As a diverse and complex manifestation of creativity and freedom, art has
indeed developed alongside life itself – reflecting both humankind’s triumphs and failures.

In this module you shall deepen your appreciation of modern and contemporary arts as
we dive deeper into its roots. This module shall also allow you to develop your creativity, artistic
expression, interpretation, analysis, and critical response through the different tasks and
activities provided.

II: LEARNING TARGETS:

A. OBJECTIVES:
Now that you had a glimpse of what you will learn in this module, let us now set the
goals and objectives you need to achieve. Throughout this module, you will be able to:

 identify the relevance of modern art and contemporary art in real life;
 classify given artworks as either modern or contemporary based on their characteristics;
 discuss materials and elements used in modern and contemporary art forms;
 analyze art elements, characteristics, and influences of modern and contemporary art;
and
 deepen your appreciation to modern art and contemporary art.

B. INSTRUCTIONS AND MATERIALS:

These are the things that you need to accomplish in this module:

 Your Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions textbook (for both online and offline
learners);
 An internet connection and a computer/laptop/smart phone to access the lessons,
activities and assessments in this module. (For online learners); and
 Short bond paper, writing and coloring materials for the art activities to be accomplished
in this module (for both online and offline learners);

Before you start with this module, please read the following reminders:

 For OFFLINE learners, copies of the power point and video files will be provided for
you. The assessment template are already included in this module;
 For ONLINE learners, you can directly encode/put your answers in the assessment
template included in this softcopy file of the module.
 For each part of the module, make sure that you are able to: read/access the necessary
information/learning materials provided; understand the concepts presented; and
accomplish all the tasks/activities before proceeding to the next section;
 Read and analyze the instructions carefully in every part of the module especially in the
different activities and assessments given;
 There are activities wherein you need to analyze artworks and watch videos related to
the topics. The URL of the videos are already embedded in this module;

 Analyzing Modern Art and Contemporary art
Hello learner! Let us now deepen your appreciation in modern and contemporary arts
through the different activities you need to accomplish. Read and access all the learning

What do you need to know?

This is the difference between ‘Modern’ and ‘Contemporary Art’

Even though most people are using ‘modern art’ and ‘contemporary art;
interchangeably when referring to modernized art, these two terms are not the same.
According to art historians, they do have a difference which is based on date ranges.
Critics consider ‘modern’ the art that was created between the 1870s and the 1960s,
we have the end of the modernism period as we get into the contemporary era. But beyond
that, we also have conceptual differences between the two ages.

MODERN ART
Modern art is called as such because it did not rely on previous teachings and styles
conventionally taught in the art academies. It started when artists started depicting scenes of
modern life but by not using traditional means. For example, they were using a paint brush to
draw their paints on canvas which led to different, more distinct and signature techniques
and a lot of experimentation. This created several movements (impressionism, surrealism,
abstract expressionism etc.) which were all based on drawing attention to the medium.

CONTEMPORARY ART
Contemporary art, is much more difficult to define. Yes, it’s the art made after the
1960s but it’s much more than that. Artists defined their work based on their personal quests,
something that created enormous styles and possibilities. One key difference between
‘contemporary’ and ‘modern’ art is the shift from aesthetic beauty to the concept of the art.
This is why, in contemporary art, the technique is not so important – the concept of the work
is of much more significance.

At present, artworks that possess both modern and contemporary characteristics
are scattered around us. (S) As an art analyst (R), you are tasked to search for and
analyze distinctive artifacts in your homes that portray modern and contemporary art
characteristics (G). As you search for evidences, you must analyze these art forms in
terms of its modern and contemporary art elements, characteristics, and influences (P).
Hence, you should be able to properly distinguish and classify your examples based on
our previous and present discussion of modern and contemporary art elements and
characteristics. Your output will be graded by your teacher according to: analysis of art
elements and principles; clarity of information; organization; and accuracy of chosen
example (S).

 Based on what you have learned about modern art and contemporary art, find an
example of an object, structure, or any art form in your home that incorporates modern
art and contemporary art characteristics/elements/influences. (1 for modern, and 1 for
contemporary)
 Analyze the two examples you have chosen and then defend your answer by elaborating
on the evident art characteristics and elements that are observable in your chosen
artifacts.
 Take a picture of the two examples you have chosen and paste it on the template
provided below. Afterwards, discuss the different art characteristics/elements/influences
that are evident in each example to defend why it is modern and why it is contemporary.
