tradition from prehistoric to present times

● create artworks showing the characteristic elements of the arts of South, West,
and Central Asia
● exhibit completed artworks for appreciation and critiquing

LEARNING COMPETENCIES

● analyzes elements and principles of art in the production of arts and crafts
inspired by the cultures of South Asia, West Asia, and Central Asia. (A8EL-IIIb-
1)
● identifies characteristics of arts and crafts in specific countries in South, West, and
Central Asia: India (rangoli, katak, mendhi, diwali); Saudi Arabia (carpet design);
Pakistan (truck art); and Tibet (mandala), etc. (A8EL-IIa-2)

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
1. Identify art elements and principles of Indian art; Diwali;
2. Create an art form that is made during Diwali Festival;
3. Appreciate Diwali Festival by expressing their creativity, passion, and
enthusiasm through their outputs.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

III. PROCEDURE

B. Lesson Proper

a. Activity “Diwali Puzzle”


 The teacher will assign 5 groups of students.
 The teacher will hand out puzzle pieces to each group that form pictures
of Taj Mahal, Goddess Lakshmi, Diya Lamps, and a Hindu family, and
Hindu community celebrating Diwali.
 The students will stick their puzzle pieces onto an illustration board given
to them.
 They will only be given 5 minutes to complete their puzzle
 The first group of students to complete their puzzle will acquire the
highest score of 10 points, 9 points to the second group, 8 points for the
third group, and 7 points for both fourth and fifth group.
C. Analysis
The teacher will ask the following questions:
a. How did you find the activity?
b. Can anyone describe the pictures that are revealed by the puzzle?
c. Are you familiar with the pictures being revealed?
d. What do you think is our topic for today?

D. Abstraction
The teacher will discuss:
● Diwali Festival (Hindu festival of Lights)
○ Diwali or Deepavali, is a Sanskrit word meaning “rows of lighted lamps”
and also known as the “festival of lights” a Hindu-originated festival in
India.
■ It is a celebration of colors and lights and about prosperity and
abundance.
■ Its light symbolizes knowledge and wisdom and darkness is for
all negative forces.
■ All the lights represent the triumph of light over dark and the
power of good over evil.
■ Diwali is celebrated with a prayer to the Goddess Lakshmi,
Hindu goddess of wealth, good fortune, youth, and beauty.
■ After which families spend the evening together lighting fireworks
and sharing a special feast.
○ Diwali is the most important festival of the year in India — and for Hindus
in particular. It is celebrated across faiths by more than a billion people in
the world's most populous nation.
○ The five-day holiday is centered around the New Moon and occurs in the
Hindu month of Kartik. On the Gregorian calendar, this falls in October or
November.
b. Diya Lamps
● Diya Lamps are oil lamps lit during the festival of Diwali. They are small pots
made from clay and could be described as 'thumb pots' as they are made by
pressing the thumb into a ball of clay and shaping it.
