CHAPTER ONE
1. Where does Carol live? And before that? She lives in England.
2. What did her parents do? Her father was a businessman and her mother was a secretary.
3. How many years did they live in Hong Kong? She lived in Hong Kong for seven years.
4. What type of music did she use to listen to? She used to listen to rock music.
5. What happened to her favourite singer? He died in a car accident.
6. Why did her father go to Australia? He went to Australia on business / for work.
7. What happened when he was coming back? His plane crashed and he died.
8. How did she hear about the crash? She heard about the crash on the news.
9. Where was her mother at the time of the crash? She was working.
10. How did her life change after that? She was always sad and she started to go out with new friends.
11. Why did her mother decide to go to England? Because Carol needed a new beginning.
12. What did she say about life in London? It was exciting.
13. Why did they look in the newspaper that day? Because Carol’s mother was looking for a job.
14. What was the job about? They needed a secretary in a private island in Scotland.
15. What was Carol going to do while
her mother worked? She could help in the garden and the farm.
16. What was Greta Ross like? She was elegant and beautiful.
17. What was she studying at college? She was studying farming.
18. Where did they live before Hong Kong? They lived in India.

CHAPTER 2
1. How did they travel to Scotland? They travelled by plane, by train and then by boat.
2. What was Carol’s mother job? She worked as Mr Ross’s secretary.
3. What do you know about Greta’s husband? He never left the island and he didn’t like visitors.
4. What did he do for a living? He was an investor. He worked with people from other countries.
5. Who did they meet in the boat? They met Tony.
6. What was the island like? It had beaches and cliffs.
7. Why couldn’t many people go near the island? Because there were dangerous rocks under the water.
8. Who was Mrs Duncan? She was the housekeeper.
9. What could Carol see from the window of the room? She could see the gardens and the sea from her window.
10. What did Carol think about the island? She thought it was beautiful.
11. What happened to the last secretary? She was in hospital.
12. What did Greta Ross do in her free time? She liked painting in her free time.
13. What can you tell me about Mr Ross? He was around 30 years old, he had a moustache, short dark hair
and he wore glasses.
14. Who was he talking to? He was talking to a business friend in New York.
15. What was the office like? There were a lot of papers and books, three telephones and a
computer.
16. Why would she have to work late? Because of the time differences with New York and Tokio.
17. What could Carol do in the island? She could help in the garden and the farm and ride a horse called
Smoke.
18. What animals did they have? They had sheep, cows and chickens.
19. What did they grow? They grew fruits and vegetables.
CHAPTER 3
1. What was the weather like? It was hot and sunny.
2. How often did she see Greta? She sometimes saw her.
3. What did she do? She took her painting things to the beach or to the hills.
4. Who were the farmers in the house? They were Dan and Stella Parks.
5. What did she do in the farm? She helped with the cows, the chicken and the sheep.
6. Who was Smoke? It was the horse of the island. It was big, friendly and lazy.
7. What did she see in one of the windows? She saw a face in one of the windows, but she didn’t know who
that was.
8. Did her mother work a lot? Yes, she did. She worked all day, sometimes even until very late at
night.
9. What did her mother tell her about Mr Ross’s job? She told her that he invested money in companies and countries,
but that it was actually his wife’s money.
10. Who did the island belong to? It belonged to Mrs Ross.
11. What called Carol’s attention about Mr Ross? That despite having a comfortable life he looked unhappy and she
didn’t understand why he never left the island.
12. What did Carol do in the sea? She sometimes went for a swim.
13. What did she take photos of? She took photos of the birds on the cliffs.
14. Why didn’t boats stop in their island? Because in that island there were dangerous rocks.
15. What happened when she took a photo of She saw Mr Ross was coming out of the house and Mr Duncan ran
the house? to her and took the film off the camera.
16. What did Mr Duncan tell her? He said that Mr Ross didn’t like to appear in photos.
17. What was Carol doing in her room one evening? She was reading a book.
18. What was the weather like that day? It was rainy.
19. What could she see from her window? She could see the grey sea and the sea behind the rocks.
20. Why did she leave her room? Because she was tired of reading.
21. What could she see at the end of the passage? She could see a door at the end of a corridor.
22. Could she enter the room? Why? No, she couldn’t because the door was locked.
23. Why was the door locked? Because it was a private room.
CHAPTER 4
1. What was the weather like? It was hot, windy and stormy.
2. Why couldn’t she sleep? Because the rain made a loud noise on her window.
3. What could she see when she opened the window? She saw a light in one of the windows.
4. Was anybody awake? Yes, there was someone awake in the locked room.
5. Where was she going? To see what was happening in the locked room.
6. What happened in that moment? Someone opemed the door and came out of the room.
7. Who left the room? It was Mr Ross.
8. Where did he put the key? He put it in the plant pot next to the door.
9. Why was she afraid? Because Mr Ross knew she saw him going out of the locked room.
10. What was the weather like the next morning? It was raining.
11. What was everybody doing that morning? Mr Ross was talking on the phone, her mother was working, Mrs
Duncan was working in the kitchen and her husband in the
garden.
12. Where was Mrs Ross? She was going to the boat with Tony.
13. What did she decide to do? She decided to go and see what there was in the locked room.
CHAPTER 5
1. What could she see in the room? She could see guitars, photographs, pictures, coloured shirts and
suits.
2. Who was Jake Rosso? He was his favourite singer as a teenager.
3. What did she discover? That Mr Ross was actually Jake Rosso.
4. Why did he look different? Because now he had short hair, a moustache and he wore glasses.
5. Why was Mr Ross afraid? Because she had discovered his secret.
6. Why did he get angry? Because he thought that she wouldn’t recognize him as she came
From Hong Kong.
7. Who were the other people in the island? They were his family. Mr and Mrs Duncan were his parents, Tony
his brother, his sister-in-law his secretary and the Parks were his
uncle and aunt.
8. What did Mr Ross say about his life as a star? That he took drugs, alcohol, that it was a crazy life but he couldn’t
stop.
9. What can you tell me about the accident? That one night he was drunk and he killed a girl with his car.
10. Did anybody know he was alive? Just his family.
11. Why did he fake a car crash? Because after killing the girl he knew that Jake had to disappear.
12. How did Greta help him? She got all his money, took a new name and through her he could
continue working.
13. Why did he always look so sad? Because he could never forget the fact that he killed a girl.
14. Why did he keep all his things? To remember what he did.
15. Why did Carol understand him? Because she had also done some things she regretted.
16. Did she ever tell anyone about their secret? No, she didn’t.
17. What does she do now? She works on a farm in England.
