In figure 8, the sources are organized by source: journal articles, popular press articles, and theses
and dissertations. This way you gain an overview and deeper understanding for each article step-by-
step. Old-fashioned data management practices persist for a number of reasons but are becoming
increasingly cumbersome as PDFs dominate as the preferred digital format for publishing texts. 24.
Clicking on each quotation will make it appear in the context of the full source so it can be reviewed
for additional insights. What counts as recent differs by field; start by looking for research published
within the last three years and gradually expand to older research when you need to collect more
articles for your review. Unfortunately, at the moment, QDAS programs do not have a “cite as you
write” feature, so reference lists cannot be generated in the same way they are in a CMS. This makes
it necessary to use both a CMS and a QDAS program for an ideal paperless workflow. I dated and
kept track of my memos in a similar way. Mobile devices also allow the text to be enlarged for
visibility and to focus on the most meaningful segments of the source for deeper engagement. Such
codes can be created before the sources are reviewed in QDAS or created along the way. You can
either create textual reports or numerical reports. I decided to take the plunge and download the trial
version of the Computer Aided Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS) Atlas.ti. Having
watched several useful videos explaining the features, I thought the best way to try it out would be
to read a paper, link it in the system and record the useful quotations that I found. In figure 14, some
initial thoughts about “criteria for success” of crowdfunding campaigns are captured in a memo
while looking at a section of one of the sources. You will have 30 days of unlimited access to all the
training contents, so you can follow your own schedule and pace. For example, figure 3 shows
Zotero, which shares a split screen with the web browser. One of the essential goals of a literature
review is to persuade readers that you have analyzed a representative segment of the research you
are reviewing. In the spring of 2015 I met with Dr. Paulus and she taught me the basics of ATLAS.ti
so I could begin my literature review with the program. They can then analyze the collected studies
by finding and identifying patterns or themes that occur frequently. Journals tend to look favorably
on systematic reviews that include articles they have published. We recommend naming files by
author and publication date, for example, “Smith 2016,” so that files can be sorted alphabetically for
fast retrieval. A literature review, as a section of a more extensive research article, summarizes the
current state of the research to justify the primary research described in the paper. This step is
important because ATLAS.ti serves as a management tool for the important points in the literature,
which in turn helps tremendously with the review process. Sources within the crowdfunding folder
appear in the middle pane and can be sorted by author, title, year, journal name, etc. For the empirical
literature regarding dialogue I found that many studies discuss how participants learn about
themselves and others in dialogue, the potential for perspective transformation, and what factors
impact the outcomes of interfaith dialogue. For example, QSR NVivo supports the importation of
entire citation manager libraries, including both bibliographic metadata and the associated annotated
PDFs. The notes field can support more substantial annotations and memos, upwards of several pages
in length. Any paper-based sources or any digital formats that are not in optical character recognition
(OCR) format may be reformatted and added to this workflow. As with my codes, I kept a dated
record of my memos as well as when I added to or edited them. Conduct a deep systematic literature
review and get the insights you need with a comprehensive toolset built specifically for your research
projects. With your help I am now able to use ATLAS.ti easier to finish my dissertation. This feature
allows for showing the frequency of the codes across documents or document groups based on two
indicators, either the quotation count or the word count.
In figure 14, some initial thoughts about “criteria for success” of crowdfunding campaigns are
captured in a memo while looking at a section of one of the sources. Good news! ATLAS.ti Desktop
supports the importing of references from reference managers. These challenges are not limited to
CMS and include: developing and maintaining requisite technology skills, 29 staying organized and
avoiding information overload, 30 adapting to changing file formats, 31 choosing from a multiplicity
of storage options, 32 overcoming the familiarity bias of manual bibliographies, 33 and managing
discipline-specific concerns. 34. I am otherwise working for the European Commission (at the
Executive Agency for Education, Audiovisual and Culture) where I am currently the Interim
Director as well as being the Head of Department for the Lifelong Learning Programme. To review
all the literature that was coded as “criteria for success,” the code is clicked and a window appears
with all the quotations on that topic across the literature sources. Families can also be used to group
Primary Documents together according to their shared characteristics. Sources within the
crowdfunding folder appear in the middle pane and can be sorted by author, title, year, journal name,
etc. Otherwise, collecting research articles from restricted journals usually requires access from an
institution such as a university or a library. It is possible to write entire sections of the literature
review by using the memo tool, before bringing it back into word processing software to ready it for
publication. The memo function was my primary tool for managing my preliminary analysis. This is
significant especially when you are generating the textual report later. MICROSCOPES. Light
Microscope Electron Microscope (1940’s). You can download the paper by clicking the button above.
This can best be done using the Text search and auto-coding function. When I had created my
themes by looking across my categories and codes for the empirical literature, I ran outputs of the
specific codes that were in each theme to bring up evidence to be included in my report. Factors to
consider include availability, cost, online storage capacity, collaboration features, and PDF
annotation support (important in Stage 2). QDAS developers themselves have taken up this
application of their software, with QSR NVivo, for example, partnering with Endnote and offering
webinars on how to conduct literature reviews. The table can be exported as Excel file and the
diagram as images. Librarians can also partner with academic departments or research technology
support operations who are vested in teaching research methods. Another section of the review
would discuss the criteria that make crowdfunding efforts successful. Finally, it is important to
ensure that the system is backed up, preferably in the cloud. Finally, in Stage 3, annotated sources
can be uploaded to a QDAS program to synthesize and begin writing the literature review. With
source materials coded in the software, it is possible to retrieve all the literature sections on the same
topic, reread them, and begin writing. As I was planning to begin my own research with my literature
review the next spring I was immediately attracted to the program and the thoughts of carrying out a
paperless literature review. Optionally you can also select words from a list of synonyms. Cell
Theory. All living things are composed of 1 or more cells. After loading it into Atlas.ti as a primary
document in a project that I had created for my literature review, I selected a few paragraphs that I
had identified as useful quotations (in green) and saved them in the Quotations manager - eg, there
was a reference made to the development of strong ties even in a short duration community, so I
saved this with the code Strong ties. Accountants presented business data such as item quantity, cost
and revenue in rows and columns on a large sheet of paper. Some of our software tools that are
effective for analyzing literature include. Mobile devices also allow the text to be enlarged for
visibility and to focus on the most meaningful segments of the source for deeper engagement.
These challenges are not limited to CMS and include: developing and maintaining requisite
technology skills, 29 staying organized and avoiding information overload, 30 adapting to changing
file formats, 31 choosing from a multiplicity of storage options, 32 overcoming the familiarity bias of
manual bibliographies, 33 and managing discipline-specific concerns. 34. If so, sources can be both
organized and annotated thoroughly within the CMS. If not, it may be better to opt for cloud storage
and then move to a digital reader on a mobile device in Stage 2 to annotate the sources. Uploading
all the annotated sources into a QDAS package not only allows quick clicking from one source to
the next for easy retrieval and review, but also provides tools and features to further organize the
sources by any criteria relevant to the literature review. In ATLAS.ti, for example, the “documents
family” feature allows grouping of sources according to characteristics such as the type of source it
came from, or whether it has been reviewed. We can get ATLAS.ti to run a word frequency check of
our literature, primarily so that we would be able to get a general overview of the words mainly used
in our literature. Using these techniques, librarians can become teachers and research partners
supporting the skill development of faculty and students. I used ATLAS.ti first in studies. Then I
used it for my work at the World Health Organization. It was the perfect solution, and we were
happy to learn that we could collaborate with researchers in any country or institution without
obtaining a special license. This sort of inquiry typically targets a particular phenomenon, population,
or even research method to examine how different studies have looked at the same thing differently.
Finally, it is important to ensure that the system is backed up, preferably in the cloud. A literature
review, then, should center the literature collection around that focus. In this way many of my
categories then became the major content areas I discussed when writing my literature review. This
way, when it is time to write, all the other sections of the sources related to that topic can be
retrieved at once. Tablets can make the transition to a paperless workflow less distressing because it
is possible to curl up with the readings, use a finger or stylus to annotate much like one would with a
highlighter or pen, and otherwise physically engage with the texts in similar ways as on paper.
Conduct a deep systematic literature review and get the insights you need with a comprehensive
toolset built specifically for your research projects. In addition, it provides analytical and
visualization tools designed to open new interpretative views on the material. Since I worked on this
project for over a year (and used one of my earlier HUs to help me with my comprehensive exams) I
do not believe I would have been able to be as organized or as easily keep track of my thoughts and
developing analysis if I had not used ATLAS.ti. In the future, if I have students or anyone training to
do qualitative research I will strongly recommend that they learn to use some sort of QDA while
ATLAS.ti is my software of choice. In such a situation, you can opt for an inductive coding
approach for those emergent ideas. When a new source is added to the library, a brief annotation
about when and where the item was located, how the item will be used in the research project, and so
on can be included, which helps ensure methodical tracking. Such codes can be created before the
sources are reviewed in QDAS or created along the way. To select a QDAS program we recommend
checking which ones are supported at your institution with site licenses and training, as well as
which ones are being used by colleagues. In other words, the beginnings of the argument might
already be crystallizing. However, they do not necessarily provide the most robust tools for literature
reviews. Born-digital publications readily synchronize with this process. This feature allows for
showing the frequency of the codes across documents or document groups based on two indicators,
either the quotation count or the word count. Finally, in Stage 3, annotated sources can be uploaded
to a QDAS program to synthesize and begin writing the literature review. See Full PDF Download

Sobur Setiaman Atlas.ti is designed to be flexible and allow you to record your thoughts at any time

framework, illustrated with concrete tips and advice for storing and organizing, reading and
annotating, and analyzing and writing. Families can also be used to group Primary Documents
together according to their shared characteristics. I have a BA in Religion and graduated with an MA
in Religion with a specialization in Islam in 2009. As Bjarnason has noted, the “physical filing
cabinet for paper journal articles has been replaced by an online repository of marked up PDFs.” 50
This repository can be either the CMS or a collection of sources in cloud storage.
The colors served as indicators of the code families when I was looking over primary documents and
the colors matched the highlighting and tabs I used to mark relevant information in any printed
books I used for the literature review. Marilyn Leask from the University of Bedfordshire and Dr.
Don Passey from the University of Lancaster, for their valuable advice. I used the comment field for
each primary document to manage the citation and abstract for the journal article within the project.
At the end of the training, you will receive an official ATLAS.ti Academy certificate. Over the
course of a year and a half I read and analyzed these articles in ATLAS.ti to develop a working
literature review, which is still a work in progress as I aim to stay up on current scholarship. By using
the network view, the argument of the literature review is visible. This is significant especially when
you are generating the textual report later. To illustrate these workflows and concepts, we focus
solely on the literature review, proposing paperless workflows which are not dependent on specific
tools or platforms. We illustrate the process with the tools we use in our own work as well as
describing innovative, open source alternatives, proposing models for librarians and researchers alike.
Clicking on the journal articles family will immediately display only those sources for further review.
Librarians can also partner with academic departments or research technology support operations
who are vested in teaching research methods. Old-fashioned data management practices persist for a
number of reasons but are becoming increasingly cumbersome as PDFs dominate as the preferred
digital format for publishing texts. 24. This way, when it is time to write, all the other sections of the
sources related to that topic can be retrieved at once. In a collaborative project, this step of the
process also allows any member of the team to pull down a source, create an annotated version, and
easily return the file to the cloud for others on the team to read and view annotations and notes.
Alternately, Docear and F1000Workspace provide CMS features, some limited analysis of sources
through memos, and reference list generation. For example, figure 3 shows Zotero, which shares a
split screen with the web browser. This provides rich insights of the literature in your review. A
researcher can also use ATLAS.ti's global filters to narrow analysis to a particular set of studies and
gain insights about a smaller set of literature. There are also free webinars and video tutorials online
for most of the programs. Then I recorded some of my highlighting in the pdf file using the tool
PDF-XChange viewer; I find this useful for future reference, though if I could ever get use to
working directly online it would be quicker. Librarians can develop the skills, create the training, and
foster collaborations required to become more fully embedded in the research process. From that
analysis, a literature review can suggest new inquiries to pursue. It examined how the community
influences the development of teachers’ competence in online collaboration and discourse, and it
considered the contribution of social aspects and online moderation. We can easily scan and convert
them into any of the supported soft copy formats for the purpose of importing them into ATLAS.ti. If
you have a lot of codes, you can work with global code filters. This can best be done using the Text
search and auto-coding function. QDAS keeps track of how often each code has been used so that it
becomes clear which topics are being discussed most often in the literature. Librarians and the
educators they serve see that many of today’s students are already paperless in how they interact
with the published literature. Since I worked on this project for over a year (and used one of my
earlier HUs to help me with my comprehensive exams) I do not believe I would have been able to be
as organized or as easily keep track of my thoughts and developing analysis if I had not used
ATLAS.ti. In the future, if I have students or anyone training to do qualitative research I will
strongly recommend that they learn to use some sort of QDA while ATLAS.ti is my software of
choice. Within projects, you can use document groups to separate studies into different categories for
easier and faster analysis. Stage 1 begins with selecting a digital tool to store and organize
sources—either a CMS or a cloud storage device.
After loading it into Atlas.ti as a primary document in a project that I had created for my literature
review, I selected a few paragraphs that I had identified as useful quotations (in green) and saved
them in the Quotations manager - eg, there was a reference made to the development of strong ties
even in a short duration community, so I saved this with the code Strong ties. The GoodReader App
(iOS) is one such digital reader; others include iAnnotate (iOS), Mac Preview (Mac), or Adobe
Acrobat PDF Reader (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Windows Phone). The table can be exported as
Excel file and the diagram as images. I find this more relaxing for the eyes and certainly more
portable. This provides an initial idea of how much support there is in the literature for each topic to
be covered in the review. PART 4: FAMILIES. What is a Family? A Family is a way of grouping
Codes to reveal links between Codes, as in a Coding Frame. Specifically, my dissertation is a
qualitative case study working with a grassroots dialogue organization of Jewish, Christian, and
Muslim adults who, since 2001, have been participating in interfaith dialogue every four to six
weeks. Please see my latest posting on doing lit review with Atlas.ti and let me know what you
think. Thanks. Reply Delete Replies Reply Unknown 12 November 2012 at 23:08 Hi. I am very
grateful to my supervisor, Dr. Julie-Ann Sime from Lancaster University, and to my eTwinning
soulmate, Tiina Sarisalmi, for their invaluable support. This feature allows you to examine the
document which contains the most (or least) frequency of the codes. Document families can also be
used to organize sources by the major themes of literature review. In this way many of my categories
then became the major content areas I discussed when writing my literature review. Any paper-based
sources or any digital formats that are not in optical character recognition (OCR) format may be
reformatted and added to this workflow. In the Mac version, you find this option under the Analysis
menu. My supervisor was Dr. Julie-Ann Sime (contact via the CSALT link below). Call me old-
fashioned, but my first step involved a paper printout and a highlighter pen. To review all the
literature that was coded as “criteria for success,” the code is clicked and a window appears with all
the quotations on that topic across the literature sources. The latter requires that you use a reference
manager like Citavi, Evernote, Zotero, Mendeley, etc. As I was planning to begin my own research
with my literature review the next spring I was immediately attracted to the program and the
thoughts of carrying out a paperless literature review. It is possible to write entire sections of the
literature review by using the memo tool, before bringing it back into word processing software to
ready it for publication. The traditional set operators union, intersection, difference, and Cartesian
product. 2. The special relational operators restrict, project, join, and divide. (See Fig. 7.1). 7.2
Closure Revisited. A CMS serves as a personal database of resources which can be organized,
searched and shared. Nowadays qualitative researchers have the option of using the powerful
functionalities of qualitative data analysis (QDA) software to assist in their data analysis. For
librarians working at institutions that lack this level of institution-wide research support, learning
more about the technologies used in each step of the research process and then stepping in to fill the
need for research methods support could be an opportunity for outreach to academic departments or
individual patrons that demonstrates the library’s worth and adds value to the institution. Once the
source is ready for further analysis in QDAS or by other research collaborators, the app provides the
option to send the PDF with all annotations “flattened.” Flattening saves the annotations within the
PDF, ensuring they are readable on other devices and in other applications, such as QDAS
introduced in Stage 3. Research outputs, most commonly in the form of PDFs, are readily accessible
online via Open Access or a library’s collections. While mid- to late-career scholars may find the idea
of going paperless daunting, this may be less true of those early in their careers. MICROSCOPES.
Light Microscope Electron Microscope (1940’s). Figure 2 shows the Mendeley interface, with
organization tools in the left-hand pane, including search and filtering tools, organizational folders,

This way the original, clean copy of the source is retained and a second, annotated copy is stored in
GoodReader. Librarians can also partner with academic departments or research technology support
operations who are vested in teaching research methods. However, they do not necessarily provide
the most robust tools for literature reviews. For the empirical literature regarding dialogue I found
that many studies discuss how participants learn about themselves and others in dialogue, the
potential for perspective transformation, and what factors impact the outcomes of interfaith
dialogue. This would no doubt be important to mention in the literature review. Librarians can teach
practical skills and offer advice regarding technologies that leverage the potential within electronic
collections, within analytical software applications, and within composition and publication tools to
create effective literature reviews. This provides rich insights of the literature in your review. In that
case, the researcher can argue that further study can address this research gap. Librarians have an
opportunity to leverage the technical affordances of born-digital composition, data management, and
publishing to support the creation and use of wholly digital literature review processes by scholars in
all phases of their careers. It was the perfect solution, and we were happy to learn that we could
collaborate with researchers in any country or institution without obtaining a special license. One
way to choose between CMS tools is to compare how well each one performs metadata extraction.
When a new source is added to the library, a brief annotation about when and where the item was
located, how the item will be used in the research project, and so on can be included, which helps
ensure methodical tracking. Librarians can build upon their expertise and experience with collecting
literature and move beyond just helping scholars create the corpus of literature for review. Optionally
you can also select words from a list of synonyms. Memos enable you to document your review
process, and keep all the notes and ideas relating to the project in one central location for easy
retrieval upon demand. In other words, the beginnings of the argument might already be
crystallizing. The researcher used network links to show that the literature review would begin by
defining “crowdfunding” and that this definition would include a discussion of its history, how it
works, and which fields are using it. To browse Academia.edu and the wider internet faster and more
securely, please take a few seconds to upgrade your browser. QDAS keeps track of how often each
code has been used so that it becomes clear which topics are being discussed most often in the
literature. The codes you apply to your literature collection allow for analysis through many powerful
tools in ATLAS.ti. You can now go through and code each results individually, or you can auto code
all results with a selected code. One of the essential goals of a literature review is to persuade
readers that you have analyzed a representative segment of the research you are reviewing. This way
you gain an overview and deeper understanding for each article step-by-step. Specifically, my
dissertation is a qualitative case study working with a grassroots dialogue organization of Jewish,
Christian, and Muslim adults who, since 2001, have been participating in interfaith dialogue every
four to six weeks. You should consider expanding your search to junior high school and university
contexts only when there are not enough studies that match your focus. Families can also be used to
group Primary Documents together according to their shared characteristics. What counts as recent
differs by field; start by looking for research published within the last three years and gradually
expand to older research when you need to collect more articles for your review. I find this more
relaxing for the eyes and certainly more portable. Students, scholars, and the librarians who support
them must adopt and refine practices to convert from paper-full to paperless literature review. In this
way many of my categories then became the major content areas I discussed when writing my
literature review.
