INF001 - GM CM Programming For Repeater Operation

This document provides instructions for programming Motorola GM and CM series mobile radios to be used in a repeater system. It outlines the necessary codeplug configuration changes including setting the transmit and receive frequencies and channels to match the repeater, disabling encryption and audio processing features, and configuring accessory port settings for repeater control integration. Hardware connections between the radios and repeater controller are also briefly discussed.

MOTOROLA CGISS APPLICATION NOTE AN0001

PROGRAMMING THE GM & CM3XX FOR USE IN A REPEATER

REV. O ISSUED 13.01.2004

1. PREFACE

This application note applies to all Professional and Commercial Series mobile radios with
model number MXXXXX9ANXXX and with serial numbers beginning with 103 and 018.

Note that due to the physical size, the Professional Series (GM3XX and GM1XX) cannot fit
into the GR300 housing and hence should only be used with the GR500 housing.

Since the Professional Series radios use ‘electronic on-off’ an electrical connection must be
made between DC supply and pin 10 of the accessory connector of both the RX and TX
radio. This is to ensure the radio turns on after a power outage. This does not apply to the
Commercial Series as they use a ‘mechanical on-off’.

2. MATERIALS

2.1 Repeater Controller (such as Zetron ZR310 or RICK) and hardware (such as GR500)
2.2 Miscellaneous hardware for the above (such as cables etc.)
2.3 Laptop or desktop PC.
2.4 Professional or Commercial Series CPS loaded on the above PC
2.5 RIBless programming cable or programming cable plus RIB.
2.6 Two GM series or CM series mobile radios.

3. PROGRAMMING

3.1 Start the CPS and read the codeplug from the radio or from a matching file.
3.2 In the codeplug, go to Per Radio, Miscellaneous and select the Global tab.

3.3 Change RX audio (accessory connector) to flat squelched – See Section 5

3.4 Tick Ignition sense.
3.5 Select the Microphone tab.

3.10 Choose the repeater controller you are using from the Accessory Package list – if the
repeater controller you are using is listed here skip the next step.
3.11 Or set the accessory pins to the function you require. Note that you will only need PTT,
Carrier Detect or PL Detect. Also ensure that active level matches the repeater controllers’
output. Do not follow this step if you have chosen a controller in step 3.10.
3.12 Once you have done this, click close.

3.13 Go to Per Channel, Per Channel 1 and select the TX/RX tab.
3.14 If this radio is the transmitting radio, enter the repeater TX frequency in the TX Frequency
field.

3.15 Enter the same frequency in the RX Frequency field.

3.16 Set the Channel Spacing field to that which is stated on the repeaters radio licence.
3.17 Set Power Level to high.
3.18 Select the PL/DPL tab, ensure Encode PL type and Decode PL type are both disabled.

3.19 Click Close.

3.20 Go to Per Personality, Per Personality 1 and select the TX/RX tab.
3.21 Set TX time-out timer to non-Cumulative.

3.22 Select the Audio tab.

3.23 Voice Pre-emphasis/De-emphasis, Signalling Pre-emphasis/De-emphasis, XPAND and Low
Level Expansion must all be un-ticked (i.e. disabled) – See Section 5.

3.24 Click Close.
3.25 Write the information to the radio or save the codeplug as a file.
3.26 In the codeplug, go to Per Channel, Per Channel 1 and select the TX/RX tab. This radio is
the opposite of the radio in step therefore enter the repeater RX frequency in the RX
Frequency field if the radio is the RX radio or visa versa.
3.27 Click Close.
3.28 Remove the programming cable from the radio and connect it to the other radio.
3.29 Write the information to the other radio or save the codeplug as another file.

4. HARDWARE CONNECTION

4.1 The Professional series radio has a 20 pin and the Commercial Series a 16-pin connector on
the back. This allows these radios to be connected to external devices such as repeater
controllers.

4.2 For further information on the pin configuration of these radios, refer to the respective
mobile installation manual and repeater controller manual.

5 EXPLAINATION

5.1 RX audio - The purpose of changing the RX audio to flat squelched is to ensure that the
audio output from the accessory connector is ‘flat’ and the squelch is applied.

5.2 Ignition sense – The purpose of enabling ignition sense is to make the radio monitor pin 10
for an input.

5.3 Voice & Signalling Pre-emphasis/De-emphasis, Pre-emphasis/De-emphasis are disabled

because the audio passing through the repeater must not be shaped in any way.

5.4 XPAND and Low Level Expansion must all be disabled because this will cause distortion if
enabled.

5.5 Flat audio means that the audio is passed through the repeater (or radio) without any
frequency shaping. If ‘flat’ audio is used, the only audio processing which is applied is a
single (6 kHz) low pass filter to prevent over-deviation. If ‘filtered audio is used, the receive
audio in the repeater is passed through a band-pass filter. This band-pass filter passes
frequencies between 300 and 3300Hz.
