Comparatives and Superlatives

Here are the basic spelling rules for comparative and superlative adjectives:
COMPARATIVES SUPERLATIVES
Rule 1 - One syllable adjectives
Simply add __er_______ Simply add _____est____
Examples: Examples:
 smart = smarter  smart = the smartest
 young = younger  young = the youngest
 fast = faster  fast = the fastest
Rule 1.1 - One syllable adjectives
If the adjective ends in a _consonat_, _vowel_, If the adjective ends in a _consonant_, _vowel_,
_consonant_, double the final _consonant_ and add _consonant_, double the final _consonant_ and add
an _er_. an _est_.
*Never with -q,-w,-x,-.y, and -z *Never with -q,-w,-x,-.y, and -z
Examples: Examples:
 wet = wetter  wet = the wettest
 big = bigger  big = the biggest
 sad = sadder  sad = the saddest
Rule 1.2 - One syllable adjectives
If an adjective ends in __e__, only add _r_. If an adjective ends in _e_, only add _st_.
Examples: Examples:
 Nice= Nicer  Nice=The nicest
 Brave= braver  Brave= The bravest
 Safe=safer  Safe= The safest
Rule 2 - Two syllable adjectives
Change the _y_to _i_ and add _er_. Change the _y_to _i_ and add _est_.
Don´t forget to add an extra syllable! Don't forget to use an extra syllable!
Examples: Examples:
 pretty = prettier  pretty = the prettiest
 happy = happier  happy = the happiest
 busy = busier  busy = the busiest

Rule 3 - Adjectives with 2 or more syllables (not ending in Y)


Simply add the word _more_ in front of the word. Simply add the words _most_ in front of the word.
Examples: Examples:
 famous = more famous  famous = the most famous
 interesting = more interesting  interesting = the most interesting
 boring = more boring  carefully = the most boring
Rule 4 – These adjectives are _irregular_. There is no rule here, so you'll just have to
memorize them. Fortunately, there aren´t many. Let´s take a look.
Examples: Examples:
 good = better  good = the best
 bad = worse  bad = the worst
 far = farther (further)  far = the farthest (the furthest)
 well = better  well = the best
 badly = worse  badly = the worst
 little/few = less  little/few = the least
● a lot (of) = more ● a lot (of) = the most
Each sentence is incorrect. Write it in its correct form.

1. The elephant is more larger then the giraffe.

___The elephant is larger than the giraffe.___

2. My house is biger than yours.

___My house is bigger than yours____

3. She is the most fastest runner in the competition.

___She is the fastest runner in the competition___

4. This book is more interestinger than the one I read last week.

___This book is more interesting than the one I read last weel_____

5. The red dress is more prettyer than the blue one.

___The red dress is prettier than the blue one____

6. He is the most tallest person in our class.

___He is the tallest person in our class___

7. The movie was excitinger than the last one.

___The movie was more exciting than the last one___

8. This pizza is gooder than the other one.

___This pizza is better than the other one___

9. Her painting is the most beautifulest in the gallery.

___Her painting is the most beautiful in the gallery___

10. The new car is more expensiver than the old one.

___The new car is more expensive than the old one___


SENTENCE STRUCTURE
COMPARATIVE:
A + VERB + COMPARATIVE ADJ. + THAN + B

A and B = Noun (or reference to a noun)


Example: The Apple / This one / the other one / etc…
Example: This book is better than that book.

SUPERLATIVE:
A + VERB + THE + SUPERLATIVE ADJ. ( + COMMON NOUN) + GROUP

A = Concrete Nouns (refers to a physical object) or Proper Nouns (refers to a specific noun; almost always
capitalised)
Example: Concrete noun – The cheetah
Example: Proper noun – Susan
Group = Prepositional phrase: Preposition + Noun (establishes a group)
Example: in the class / on the Earth / in existence / at the park

Follow the example and write three sentences with the same adjective.

Example: ADJECTIVE - FAST


1. Regular - Dogs are fast animals.
2. Comparative - Eagles are faster than dogs.
3. Superlative - The cheetah is the fastest land animal on the Earth.

1. ADJECTIVE – TALL
Mario’ sister is the tallest person in the party.
I think that dog is the tallest animal in my city.

2. ADJECTIVE – DANGEROUS
Wait! That place is the most dangerous place in Peru.
That district is more dangerous than 5 years ago.

3. ADJECTIVE – SPICY
I think ceviche is the spiciest meal in the world.
Food from that restaurant is spicier than the one that is near my house.

4. ADJECTIVE – FUNNY
My cat is the funniest friend I could ever have.
Your cat looks funnier than mine.

5. ADJECTIVE – BAD
O no! This is the worst day of my life.
Don’t get angry but your solution is worse than mine.

6. ADJECTIVE – GOOD
My favorite actor is the best comedian in this country.
That pencil durability is better than the one I bought Yesterday.
