Chapter 1

The Problem

Introduction

Home Economics and Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) curriculum,

encompasses a diverse of practical skills aimed at equipping students with essential life skills

(Department of Education, 2017). Central to this domain is the adherence to safety protocols,

which serve as the cornerstone of responsible and professional cookery practice. The

importance of safety protocols in culinary education cannot be overstated. Beyond mitigating

the risk of accidents, adherence to safety measures fosters a culture of responsibility and

professionalism among students (Smith & Johnson, 2020). It is within this context that the

level of awareness among cooking students regarding safety protocols becomes a topic of

inquiry.

Despite the recognized significance of safety protocols, there remains a gap in

understanding the extent to which cookery students are aware of these measures. Furthermore,

the relationship between students' awareness of safety protocols and their academic

performance in TLE remains relatively unexplored. Understanding this correlation is crucial

for educators and policymakers seeking to optimize curriculum design and instructional

strategies in home economics education (Brown & White, 2019). This study seeks to address

these gaps by examining the level of awareness of safety protocols among cookery students

and its association with their academic performance in TLE. The research aims to inform

educational practices and contribute to the ongoing discourse on the integration of safety

protocols in cookery academic.

SAN ISIDRO COLLEGE-INTEGRATED BASIC EDUCATION
The field of Home Economics, as part of the TLE curriculum, encompasses various

practical skills essential for daily living. Cookery, a prominent component of home economics,

involves tasks that require careful attention to safety protocols to prevent accidents and

promote a safe learning environment (Department of Education, 2017). However, the extent

of awareness among cookery students regarding these safety protocols remains underexplored.

Ensuring a safe environment in cookery not only mitigates the risk of accidents but also fosters

a culture of responsibility and professionalism among students (Smith & Johnson, 2020).

Home Economics and Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) curriculum

emphasizes practical skills crucial for everyday life, with safety protocols being fundamental,

particularly in cookery. Despite their importance, there exists a gap in understanding the level

of awareness among cookery students regarding safety measures. Additionally, the correlation

between students' awareness of safety protocols and their academic performance in TLE

remains underexplored. This study aims to address these gaps by examining the awareness of

safety protocols among cookery students and its association with their academic performance.

Through this research, insights can be gained to enhance curriculum design and instructional

strategies in home economics education, ultimately contributing to a safer and more effective

learning environment.
SAN ISIDRO COLLEGE-INTEGRATED BASIC EDUCATION
Statement of the Problem

The study determines the level of awareness among cookery students regarding safety

protocols remains a significant concern. Despite the essential role of safety measures in

cookery, the extent to which students prioritize and internalize these protocols in relation to

their academic performance in TLE remains underexplored. The problem at hand

encompasses several key inquiries:

Specifically, the study answered the following questions:

1. What is the level of awareness among cookery students regarding safety

protocols in Home Economics education within the TLE curriculum?

2. What is the academic performance of cookery students in TLE, and how does

it relate to their awareness of safety protocols?

3. Does the level of awareness of safety protocols among students significantly

influence their academic performance?

Hypothesis of the Study

The following is the hypothesis of the study.

H0: There is no significant correlation between the level of awareness of safety

protocols among cookery students and their academic performance in Technology and

Livelihood Education (TLE).

SAN ISIDRO COLLEGE-INTEGRATED BASIC EDUCATION
Theoretical Framework

This study draws upon Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) (Bandura, 1986) and

Vygotsky's Socio-Cultural Theory (Vygotsky, 1978). These theories offer valuable insights

into the social and cognitive factors influencing individuals' behavior and learning processes.

Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the reciprocal interaction between

individuals, their behavior, and the environment. According to SCT, individuals learn through

observation, imitation, and modeling, wherein the behavior of others serves as a significant

source of learning. In the context of cookery students, their awareness of safety protocols may

be influenced by observing and imitating the safety practices modeled by instructors, peers,

and the broader culinary community.

Furthermore, Vygotsky's Socio-Cultural Theory underscores the role of social

interactions and cultural contexts in shaping individuals' cognitive development. Within the

educational setting, interactions with instructors, peers, and the learning environment play a

pivotal role in students' acquisition of knowledge and skills. In the context of cookery

education, students' awareness of safety protocols is influenced by the instructional practices,

cultural norms, and social dynamics prevalent within the culinary domain.

By integrating these theoretical perspectives, the study aims to explore how social

interactions, observational learning, and cultural contexts contribute to cookery students'

awareness of safety protocols and its implications for their academic performance in

Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) within the Home Economics curriculum.
