Galileo Galilei

Galileo Galilei was an Italian astronomer, physicist and engineer born in 1564 in Pisa, Italy. He made crucial contributions to the sciences by inventing an improved telescope and using it to observe the skies, discovering moons orbiting Jupiter and that the Earth orbits the Sun. His findings contradicted the widely-held belief at the time that the Earth was the center of the universe, landing him in trouble, but ultimately changed scientific thinking.

Galileo Galilei

About Galileo
Galileo Galilei was born in 1564, in
Italy. His father was a famous
musician and Galileo was very
musical too.

He loved to invent things. He made a

telescope that let him see as far as
other planets. He was going to
become a doctor but chose to work
on maths instead.

He was often in trouble because he said things that people

didn’t agree with. He believed in different things to some
people, such as the Earth moving around the Sun.

His ideas changed the way scientists worked and he is

possibly the world’s most famous astronomer.

About Galileo
Galileo Galilei was born in Pisa,
which is in Italy. He was born in
1564 and was the oldest of six
children. His father was a famous
musician who played an instrument
called a lute, which is like a guitar.
Galileo became a good musician too.
When he wanted to choose what job
to have, he had lots of choices. He
thought he might become a priest or
a doctor but in the end, decided to
become a mathematician.

He used maths to also become a very successful scientist. He

invented a telescope that was much better than anyone had
made before. This meant that he was able to spot objects
around distant planets. He was the first to see moons orbiting
(going around) Jupiter. These moons are known as the Galilean
satellites after Galileo.

He had some ideas that made him unpopular because they

were different to what other people believed. For a long time,
people had believed the Sun orbited the Earth but Galileo said
that it was the Earth that went around the Sun, like the other
planets. Many people disagreed with him but he was proven to
be correct.
Galileo Galilei
One of the most important scientists
in history, Galileo Galilei was born
in Pisa, Italy in 1564. He came from
a large family, being the oldest of
six children. His family moved to
Florence when he was eight but he
stayed in Pisa and went to school at
a monastery. This is a place where
monks live, work and pray. Having
been educated by monks, Galileo
thought about becoming a priest but
he chose a different direction.
He started to study medicine in order to become a doctor but
he was naturally curious about the world and space and chose
to become an astronomer and a scientist. He was a frequent
inventor, making telescopes, thermometers and a new kind of
compass. Of these, the telescope was probably most important
to his career.

He had some ideas that made him unpopular because they

were different to what other people believed. When looking at
Jupiter, he saw four objects orbiting the planet. He announced
that they were moons but most people didn’t believe him as
they believed they were stars. He decided they must be moons
travelling around Jupiter as they disappeared regularly and
stars wouldn’t do that. Perhaps his most important idea was
that the Earth went around the Sun, as did the other planets.
Many people disagreed with him, arguing it was the Sun that
went around the Earth but he was proven to be correct by later
scientists.
