New Engine Features
ECM
The B Gas Plus engine has a CM556B ECM that replaces the CM420 ECM used
on the B5.9G engine. This new controller offers more processing power and
provides additional diagnostic capability and functionality. The CM556B is a poly-
bend design similar to other Cummins engine platforms.

Throttle Actuator
A new throttle actuator is used on this engine. The throttle actuator takes the
place of the mechanical throttle plate, idle bypass, and external throttle position
sensor. This actuator is not compatible with the present C Gas Plus, C8.3G, or
L10G engine.

Fuel Pressure/Temperature Sensor, Secondary

This is a new sensor, located in the fuel mixer, which measures the pressure and
temperature of the fuel entering the engine.

Fuel Pressure Sensor, Primary

This sensor measures the pressure of the OEM fuel supply as it enters the
engine fuel system. It is located in the low-pressure regulator housing.

6
Intake Manifold Absolute Pressure/Temperature Sensor
This sensor replaces the separate pressure and temperature sensors used on
the B5.9G engine. It is located in the intake manifold after the throttle actuator.

Exhaust Back Pressure Sensor

The exhaust back pressure sensor is remote-mounted on the intake manifold.
This sensor measures the exhaust back pressure next to the oxygen sensor by
use of a pipe and fittings from the exhaust outlet adapter to the sensor. This
sensor allows improved fuel system control for the engine.

Knock Sensors
Two knock sensors are utilized on the B Gas Plus engine. One is mounted on the
intake manifold cover and the other on the cylinder block. These sensors can
detect combustion detonation (knock) to allow improved engine protection and
control of the fuel system. Each sensor monitors three cylinders and each
cylinder carries separate fault codes for ease of diagnostics.

Oil Pressure/Temperature Sensor

The oil pressure/temperature sensor is new for the B Gas Plus engine and is
located in the cylinder block, below the ECM mounting bracket. The sensor
allows the ECM to measure engine oil pressure and temperature, which
enhances engine protection.

Engine Wiring Harness

An engine-mounted wiring harness with OEM interface connection is supplied.
The OEM interface connection is a 23-pin Deutsch connector and 31-pin Deutsch
connector.

Malfunction Indicator Lamps

The wiring harness contains connections for three OEM-mounted indicator
lamps. The lamps represent stop engine (red), check engine (yellow), and
low fuel pressure (green). The lamps need to be visible to the equipment
operator.

The lamps will illuminate or flash if a malfunction has been detected. The check
engine lamp circuit is 12 VDC with a 200-mA maximum driver. A momentary
toggle switch can be installed with the check engine lamp to provide simple in-
cab diagnostics.

Power Supply Requirement

Power supply to the engine is limited to 14.5 VDC. Using the B Gas Plus engine
with a 24-VDC system will require the use of a voltage converter. Power to the
ECM and the ignition system must be controlled by a relay wired to the key
switch. The ECM also requires a permanent 14.5-VDC supply.

7
Engine Protection Package
The engine is equipped with an engine protection package. Power and speed
derates will occur if an engine protection parameter is out of specification. The
equipment owner has the option to enable engine protection shutdown. When
enabled, the engine will shut down after a 30 second warning period (Note: The
default setting for engine protection shutdown is disabled).

NOTE: All pressure sensors used on the B Gas Plus are absolute pressure
sensors. When measuring pressures using a gauge, atmospheric pressure must
be added to the measured pressure to allow comparison with the readings in
INSITE (Future versions of INSITE will convert atmospheric pressure to a gauge
reading).

Engine Lubricating Oil

oi800v32
General Information

Cummins natural gas engines require a special oil

that is available from major oil suppliers. Careful
attention must be paid to engine oil specifications
because natural gas engine oil has different
properties than diesel engine oil.

The oil specification for the B5.9G, B Gas Plus,

B5.9LPG, B LPG Plus, C8.3G, and C Gas Plus
engines is not the same as the L10G engine
lubricating oil specification.

CAUTION
Do not use L10G engine oil in the B5.9G, B Gas Plus, B5.9LPG, B LPG Plus,
C8.3G, and C Gas Plus engines. If L10G engine lubricating oil is used,
failure of the tappets and camshaft will occur.
CAUTION
Do not use diesel engine oil in a natural gas engine. If diesel engine oil is
used, valve torching, piston scuffing, and reduction of spark plug life will
occur.
CAUTION
A sulfated ash limit of 0.6 percent has been placed on all engine lubricating
oils recommended for use in Cummins natural gas engines. Higher ash oils
can cause valve and/or piston damage and lead to excessive oil
consumption and degradation of the catalyst.

8
B5.9G, B Gas Plus, B5.9LPG, B LPG Plus, Modify oi800v32 to show CES20074 on
C8.3G, and C Gas Plus engines must use the label instead of API-CD, SAE 15W40…
oil that conforms to Cummins Engineering
Standard (CES) 20074. This standard will
be identified on the supplier’s oil
packaging. If in doubt whether the oil
meets the Cummins specification, contact
the supplier to obtain a copy of the
Cummins registration letter that certifies
the oil meets the specification.

For easy identification, the packaging of

the oil will show CES20074 upon it.

For further assistance contact an

authorized Cummins repair location, which
can supply information regarding oil brands
that comply with Cummins specifications.

Correct engine lubricating oil and filter

change intervals must be maintained for
each specific Cummins engine model. A
sharp increase in component wear and
damage can occur if lubricating oil and
filter maintenance intervals are not

Special “break-in” engine lubricating oils are not recommended for new or rebuilt
Cummins natural gas engines. During the “break-in”, use the same lubricating oil
that will be used in normal engine operation.

9
As the engine oil becomes contaminated, oi8guvb
essential oil additives are depleted.
Lubricating oils protect the engine as long
as these additives are functioning properly.
Progressive contamination of the oil
between oil and filter change intervals is
normal. The amount of contamination will
vary depending on the operation of the
engine, distance on the oil, fuel consumed,
and new oil added.

NOTE: Natural gas engine oil does not

darken and look dirty as diesel engine oil
does. Use the maintenance schedule in
Section 2 to determine the engine oil
change interval requirement, not the
engine oil’s appearance.

Additional information regarding lubricating oil availability throughout the world is

available in the E.M.A. Lubricating Oils Data Book for Heavy-Duty Automotive
and Industrial Engines. The data book can be ordered from the following:

Fuel Specifications
Cummins natural gas engines provide a low emission alternative for various
applications. In order for the engines to continually provide extremely low
emission levels and provide the best durability and reliability, Cummins has
developed several fuel standards. Cummins Engineering Standard (CES) 14604,
Natural Gas Fuel; and CES 14608 Wide Range Natural Gas Fuel define some of
the natural gas specifications. Operators of Cummins natural gas engines
should refer the standard or specification to the potential fuel suppliers and
request confirmation as to local availability.

10
For CES 14604, the methane number based on SAE 922359 must not be below
80 and the higher heating value must not be below 975 BTU/Standard Cubic
Feet. This standard applies for the B5.9G, B Gas Plus, C8.3G, and C Gas Plus
engines.

B Gas Plus and C Gas Plus engines include knock sensing and control with
Cummins' CORE hardware based control architecture (currently CM556B ECM).
For approved ratings of the B Gas Plus and C Gas Plus engines, CES 14608 can
be used. The methane number based on SAE 922359 must not be below 65
and the lower heating value must not be below 18,800 BTU/lbm.

These specifications apply to fuel as it is delivered to the engine, regardless of

whether its origin was liquid or gaseous. Liquid natural gas (LNG) is an
acceptable fuel provided the on-board fuel storage and supply system delivers
proper pressure, temperature, and complete vaporization to the engine fuel
system inlet. These specifications are not intended to cover certification
requirements. Landfill gas and gas with chlorine additives are not permitted. The
fuel must not contain water, dust, sand, dirt, oils, or any other substance or
component in an amount that is detrimental to the operation of the engine. More
specifications and test methods are detailed in these standards.

Cummins natural gas engines are designed and adjusted to meet performance
and emissions specifications with fuel meeting these specifications. The engine
may operate on a wide range of fuel properties, but performance and emissions
will be affected, and in extreme cases, fuel with characteristics out of these
specifications can cause engine reliability or durability issues. Cummins assumes
no responsibility for the use of fuels that do not meet this specification. Engine
damage caused by fuel not meeting this specification is not covered under
warranty.

Operators must be alert for sudden changes in engine operation, power levels,
or pre-ignition. Each of these can be a sign of substandard fuel. If you suspect an
issue related to fuel quality, ask your fuel supplier to sample and analyze the fuel
in the vehicle. Contact your local Cummins Authorized Repair Location for
information regarding calculating methane number, higher heating value, and
lower heating values.

For further details and discussion of fuels for Cummins engines, refer to Bulletin
No. 3379001, Fuels for Cummins Engines.

Reference Document INSITE 101-007 4021317.doc for edit marks.
INSITE Parameter Explanations

INSITE™ is the only Cummins supplied electronic service tool for Gas Plus
Engines. Standard J1587 scan tools can be used to read fault codes and monitor
some parameters, but INSITE™ is required to adjust parameters and monitor all
parameters, among other things. For more information, refer to INSITE™ User
Manuals, Bulletin 3666203.

On-line Help and the INSITE™ User Manual:

This part of INSITE™ contains information on how to use the INSITE™
application. All of the information in the user’s manual can be found in the on-line
help system. This system provides context-specific help through the help button
in the INSITE™ application dialog boxes.

INSITE™ Security:
To communicate with an engine, INSITE™ must have security installed. This can
be installed when INSITE™ is installed or later. For more information on security,
refer to INSITE™ System Administrator’s Manual, Bulletin 3885787.

These Parameter Descriptions are for Gas Plus engines only.

Accelerator Pedal Position:

Position of the accelerator pedal. Measured in percentage 0-100.

Battery Voltage:
Actual voltage supplied to the ECM. Please note the throttle actuator, heated
oxygen sensor, and ignition control module are supplied from a switched power
source. This supply voltage is not detected by the ECM.

Camshaft Position Sync Counts:

There are six evenly spaced pickups (one for each cylinder) and one unevenly
spaced pickup (shows that the next pickup is for cylinder 1) on the cam gear.
Sync counts are the number of pickups on the cam gear that pass by the engine
position sensor before the seventh irregularly spaced pickup passes by it during
cranking. This value should not be over 7 for one attempt at starting. If the
vehicle dies or does not start on the first crank, the key switch must be shut off
(power to ECM cut) to reset the value to zero.

Closed Loop Operation:

After the first minute of operation (after the engine is started), the system should
go to and remain in closed loop mode during steady state operation (idling, top of
stall test, full throttle and constant load dyno test). The engine will drop out of
closed loop mode when motoring (decelerating without the accelerator pedal
depressed). Also, when motoring, the fuel control valve will go to 0 percent. The

20
engine will go back into closed loop mode as soon as the accelerator pedal is
depressed or when the vehicle comes to a stop.

Coolant Temperature:
The temperature of the engine coolant.

Engine Fuel Shutoff Command:

Open/Closed. This is the commanded position of the fuel shutoff (not
necessarily the actual mechanical position). The valve needs at least 9.5 Volts to
open. When the ignition is turned on, the valve will open for 2 seconds and then
close until engine speed is detected.

Engine Oil Pressure:

Pressure measured in the oil rifle. Please note, this sensor measures the
pressure in an absolute value. With no pressure applied to the sensor, it will read
atmospheric pressure (14.7 PSI at sea level).

Engine Speed:
This is the speed of the engine as sensed by the ECM. The ECM uses the speed
read from the camshaft gear by the engine position sensor.

Exhaust Back Pressure:

Pressure measured at the exhaust outlet connection. Please note, the sensor
measures the pressure in an absolute value. With no pressure applied to the
sensor, it will read atmospheric pressure (14.7 PSI at sea level).

Fuel Control Valve:

Percent open (not percent duty cycle) commanded to the fuel control valve. Zero
percent open means the valve is closed for conditions such as over speed
shutoff or motoring.

Fuel Pressure – Primary:

Fuel pressure measured at the inlet to the low-pressure regulator housing. This is
the pressure supplied by the high-pressure regulator. The sensor measures the
pressure in an absolute value.

Fuel Pressure – Secondary:

Fuel pressure measured at the inlet to the mixer housing. This is the pressure
supplied by the low-pressure regulator. The sensor measures the pressure in an
absolute value.

Gas Mass Flow Compensation:

This is the amount of change (percentage duty cycle) to the fuel control valve
due to the mass sensor reading. This is the correcting function that occurs when
gas flow sensed does not equal gas flow commanded. This means that the gas
mass flow sensor reads a different amount of fuel flow than what is being
commanded.

21
• A (+) positive value indicates gas flow sensed (from gas mass sensor) is less
than commanded and the control system is “opening” the fuel control valve more
to compensate.

• A (–) negative value indicates gas flow sensed is more than commanded and
the control system is closing the
fuel control valve to compensate.

Gas Mass Flow Deviation:

This is the difference between gas mass flow sensed and gas mass flow
commanded. It is shown in pounds/hr. A (+) positive value indicates less gas flow
is being sensed than commanded. A (–) negative value indicates more gas flow
is being sensed than commanded. The value should remain around zero if the
control system is within its limits.

Heated Oxygen Sensor Compensation:

Percentage of fuel the heated oxygen sensor is adding/subtracting compared to
its limit. The control system will try to bring Lambda sensed (reading from the
heated oxygen sensor) closer to Lambda commanded (heated oxygen sensor
deviation close to zero) by adding or subtracting fuel. A (+) positive percentage
means the heated oxygen sensor is sensing a rich condition and the control
system is removing fuel (adding Lambda) to the gas flow commanded. A (–)
negative percentage means the heated oxygen sensor is sensing a lean
condition and is adding fuel (removing Lambda) from the gas flow commanded.

Heated Oxygen Sensor Deviation:

This is the difference between Lambda sensed and Lambda commanded. It is
shown in Lambda. A (+) positive value indicates a rich condition. A (–) negative
value indicates a lean condition. The value should remain around zero if the
control system is within its limits.

Idle Validation Status:

Idle/Off-Idle status from the idle validation switches at the accelerator pedal.

Intake Manifold Air Temperature:

This is the temperature of the air in the intake manifold.

Intake Manifold Pressure:

This is the pressure read by the intake manifold pressure sensor in the intake
manifold. Please note, the sensor measures the pressure in an absolute value.
With no pressure applied to the sensor, it will read atmospheric pressure (14.7
PSI at sea level).

Lambda:
This is the unit used to measure the partial pressure of oxygen in the exhaust
gas. Other Cummins natural gas engines use the term air/fuel ratio (e.g. how

22
much fuel to air in the mixture).. The higher the Lambda, the leaner the engine is
running.

Mixer Inlet (Boost) Pressure:

This is the pressure read by the mixer inlet pressure sensor at the air/fuel mixer
assembly. Please note, the sensor measures the pressure in an absolute value.
With no pressure applied to the sensor, it will read atmospheric pressure (14.7
PSI at sea level).

Mixer Inlet Pressure Limit:

The maximum boost level allowed by the ECM before the waste gate starts to
release boost pressure. Sustained boost pressures higher than the boost limit will
result in an over-boost fault code.

Throttle Position:
Position of the throttle plate. Measured in percentage 1-100.

Throttle Position Commanded:

Commanded position of the throttle plate from the ECM. This value should be
equal to the actual throttle position.

Waste gate Control Valve:

Percentage open (not percentage duty cycle) commanded to the waste gate
control valve. When the waste gate control valve is 100 percent open, the waste
gate itself should be completely closed.

Zero percent open means the control system wants to dump boost (the valve is a
normally closed valve = fail-safe for boost). Zero percent open means that the
control valve vent is closed, giving pressure to the waste gate actuator and
opening the
Waste gate to dump boost.

One hundred percent open means that the system wants to build boost by
closing the waste gate.

NOTE: At and near idle, the control valve should be approximately zero percent,
even though the waste gate is actually closed. This is because there is not
enough pressure from the intake manifold to properly actuate the waste gate
(about 8-12 PSI is required).
