How to complete your learning plan

1. Reflect on your practice

Refer to CNO’s Practice Reflection questions to help you think about your experiences and identify areas
of your practice that need professional development.

2. Identify your learning needs

What are the most important areas in your nursing practice that need improvement?
Consider the following:

Talking with a peer(s) or colleague(s) from any practice setting about your learning needs.

How will addressing your learning needs help you improve your nursing practice?

3. Develop two learning goals

Based on your areas of practice needing further development, what are your learning goals?
When defining your learning goals, consider the following:

What specific areas of your nursing practice are you going to address with this goal?

How do you hope to enhance or improve your nursing practice?

How will you benefit from these changes?

Who else might benefit from these changes (e.g. clients, peers or other health care team
members you interact with)?

When do you hope to see results?

Learning goal 1

Identify your learning needs, define your learning goal and describe your learning activities. Provide a timeline for when
you intend to complete your learning activities.

Learning needs:
Becoming more assertive to become a better communicator. This need was identified by the clinical instructor in the
previous semester. The clinical instructor pointed out that assertiveness is important in the nursing profession because
being a clear and effective communicator allows a nurse to collaborate well with colleagues and clients. Currently, I am
working on cultural behavioral differences as well as the English language to feel more confident in communications at
placements.

Learning goal:
I will demonstrate clear and assertive communication at work by the end of the next placement timeline (the end of June
2024).

Learning activities and timelines:

Since this learning goal will take some time to develop, this time target is my first phase in which improved assertiveness
during communication is achieved. From there, I will continually work on this goal along with acquiring more nursing
knowledge, which should enhance my confidence in communication more since part of my current challenge is insufficient
confidence at work.

Learning goal 2

Identify your learning needs, define your learning goal and describe your learning activities. Provide a timeline for when
you intend to complete your learning activities.

Learning needs:
I want to improve my collaborative skills. Having come from a background of fairly small family size and having no
siblings, I have found myself not very great at supporting others while receiving support from them. This is compounded
by the fact that English is my second language for which I normally push myself one step harder in any team dynamics,
which makes it a little unsmooth in these team collaborations. In recent placement and lab opportunities, I have realized
this learning need strongly as the way I participate in these activities is by being prepared and able to answer questions,
but not oriented towards providing support for peer students so that I can be helpful.

Learning goal:
I will demonstrate an attitude of being helpful to peer students and taking good care of the connections with them by the
end of this acute placement and the chronic placement.

Learning activities and timelines:

This is not an easy task, however, having realized the need is my first step to move towards the goal. From now on, I will
strive to participate in team communication, acknowledge my mistakes, not be shy of asking questions, and think of how I
can help provide information for peer students. I would not like to set this goal strictly by the end of this acute placement
period since this will take time to develop.
