1.2.PREPOSITIONS
preposition are words which are used to connect nouns, pronouns and phrases in any
sentences.

A, In front of: means further forward than someone or some something else.

Examples:

She started talking to the man in front of her.

The teacher stands in front of the students.

A band plays its music in front of an audience.


B. Behind: means at the back of something It is the opposite of in front of.

Examples

I hung my coat behind the door

Who is that person behind the door?

I slow down my car because there was a police car behind me.

C. Between: normally refers to something in the middle of two objects, thing, places and
persons.

Examples

There are mountains between the two towns.

Number 5 is between the number 4 and 6.

I put the pen between the book and the exercise book.

D. On: is used with days (e.g Friday) date (e.g June 31)

Examples

Are you happy on rainy days?

We will have a meeting on Thursday.

She visited us on June 12.

E, In: is used with a longer period of time. It can be used with months, years, morning,
evening…….

Example

Her grandfather died in February.

Seble visited Lalibela in 2011.

The man and his child go for a walk in the evening.


F. At: is used with holidays like Easter, Ramadan and Christmas. at is also used with:

At noon at Easter

At night at midnight

Hanna‟s First Day at Her New School

Hanna skips all the way home. Hanna sees her mother. She is sweeping the kitchen floor. Hanna
sits down at the table. Then she says. “I like my new school.‟‟ My teachers name is mr. Tesfaye.
My new friends are Derartu is from Hawassa, and Dina is from Shashemene.
Mother says,” Tell me about the school, please.” She says. The director‟s office is beside
the staff room. The teachers can go to the staffroom. Students can‟t go there.
Mother says,” Hanna, its important that you read. Is there a library at your school?
Hanna answers, “yes mother. I can go to the library to get books. The library is between two

Read the following passage carefully

Who gets more

Mesfin and Mekdes are brother and sister. For five days they pick up small stones on
their way home from school. They want to find out who can pick up more stones each day.

On Monday Mesfin picks up twenty small stones. On Tuesday Mesfin picks up eight
stones and Mekdes pick up ten stone.

On Wednesday Mesfin looks carefully. He wants to find many stones. He picks up thirty
nine small stones. Mekdes picks up some stones. But she does not get as many as Mesfin.
Mekdes picks up thirty two stones.

On Thursday Mesfin picks up twelve stones and mekdes picks up fourteen stones. On
Friday Mesfin picks up nineteen stones. Mekdes picks up as many small stones as Mesfin picks
on Friday.

Must: is used to express obligation

1.5 Telling The Time

Look at the following dialogue.

Saron: pardon me, what is the time?


Sami: It is almost nine o clock.
Saron: Can you tell me the exact time, please?
Sami: Yes, of course. It is ten minutes to nine.
Saron: Thank you, Sami.
Sami: It doesn‟t matter.
The common way to tell the time is to tell the minutes first, followed by the preposition „past or
to and then the hour.

Fifteen minutes past the hour is referred to as quarter past the hour.

Thirty minutes: past the hour is referred to as half past the hour.

Look at the clocks and study the questions and answers.

 A verb is a word that expresses an action or state of being.

Shure‟s Watch Tells the Time

Subject
 The subject part of a sentence consists of nouns, pronouns adjectives. This is also called
noun part.

Example

A. The fat man is drinking coffee.


B. Dawit plays the piano.
 In sentence ‟A‟ the subject “the fat man” the action of drinking coffee.
 In sentence „B‟ the subject “Dawit” perform the action of playing the piano.
 We can identify the subject by asking a wh –questions.

Predicate

 The predicate part of a sentence consists of verbs, compliment, adverb and modifiers.

The Farmer and his Animals

Ato sembeto is a farmer in a village near Addis Abeba he lives with his wife Kedija and their
five children, Maru, Marta ,Biritu, Jemal and Nigusse. Ato Sembeto has ten cows, three donkeys,
thirty chickens, and five bee hives. The family also has a dog and a cat.

The cat is the only animal that lives in the house the family. The other animals and the bees have
their own homes. The cows live in a barn, the chickens in a cage and the donkeys in a shed. The
dog lives in the compound outside the house. The bees live in hives on the trees in or near the
compound.

The dog does not sleep at night. It guards the animal and the family from harm. When the dog
hears strange sound or smells a wild animal, it barks to wake the farmer. The cat always stays in
the house and hunts for rats. When the cat sees a rat, it chases it, and eats it.

Ato Sembeto works all day on his farm. His wife milks the cow. The youngest daughter, Marta,
collects the eggs from their chickens, and the oldest son, Maru cuts honey from the bee hives.
The donkeys help the family to carry wood and other products to and from the market. They also
carry harvested crops such as teff, barley, and beans from Ato Sembeto‟s farm.
