Teaching Scenario: Describing Hobbies in Junior High School English Class

1. Introduction:

 Objective: Introduce the topic of hobbies, set the context for the lesson, and explain the
importance of being able to describe one's hobbies in English.
 Activity:
1. Gather materials: Prepare pictures or videos related to hobbies, flashcards or visuals
for key vocabulary, props related to hobbies (optional), and role-playing cards (optional).
2. Pre-teach vocabulary: Introduce key vocabulary and phrases related to hobbies using
flashcards, games, or interactive activities.
3. Prepare sentence starters and prompts: Create a list of sentence starters and prompts
like "In my free time, I like to..." or "One of my hobbies is..." to support students during
discussions.
4. Begin with a class discussion about hobbies. Ask students if they have any hobbies,
then ask them to tell about their hobbies, and then direct their friends to respond.
- Ask student to discuss why hobbies are important for personal development and
relaxation.
- Introduce key vocabulary and phrases related to hobbies. For example: "I
enjoy," "I like," "My favorite hobby is," etc.
 Teacher's Role:0 The teacher serves as a facilitator, encouraging student participation and
guiding the discussion.

2. Presentation:

 Objective: Expose students to authentic language use and provide a model for discussing
hobbies in English.
 Activity:
1. Divide students into pairs.
2. Provide each pair with a discussion prompt card related to hobbies. Examples:
* "Tell your partner about your favorite hobby and why you enjoy it."
* "Ask your partner what they do to relax and listen to their experiences. Then, share
your own hobbies and preferences."
* Monitor the discussions and offer support if needed.
 Teacher's Role: Guide the students in identifying and understanding the language used in
authentic contexts.

3. Practice:

 Objective: Provide students with opportunities for controlled practice in a supportive


environment.
 Activity:
1. Divide the class into pairs or small groups.
2. Distribute sets of pictures or flashcards related to different hobbies (e.g., painting,
playing sports, reading).
3. Each group discusses and describes the hobbies depicted in the pictures using the
phrases introduced earlier.
4. Encourage students to use the vocabulary and expressions naturally in their
conversations.
5. Option 1: Hobby Gallery (groups of 3-4):
- Ask each group to create a simple poster or presentation about their shared
hobbies.
- Encourage them to include pictures, drawings, and short texts explaining what
they like about their hobbies.
- Provide time for each group to present their "Hobby Gallery" to the class.

Option 2: Role-playing (pairs):

- Distribute role-playing cards with different scenarios related to hobbies.


- Allow students time to prepare their roles and practice their lines.
- Have each pair perform their role-play for the class.
6. Theacher will analyze the correctness of the vocabulary spoken.

 Teacher's Role: Circulate among the groups, providing support, and offering language
assistance when needed.

4. Wrap-up and Reflection

 Objective: Apply language skills in a real-life context, promoting communication and


creativity.
 Activity:
- Facilitate a class discussion to summarize the importance of hobbies.
- Ask students to share their experiences and learnings from the activity.
- Have students write a short reflection paragraph using the target language,
describing their favorite hobby or the importance of hobbies.
 Teacher's Role: Monitor individual progress, offer guidance, and encourage students to
focus on effective communication.

5. Remember

- Throughout the activity, use clear and concise language when providing instructions or
explanations.
- Model correct language usage and correct any grammatical errors gently without
hindering communication.
- Encourage active participation and celebrate students' efforts to communicate in the
target language.

6. Differentiation

- Provide visual aids and sentence starters for students who need additional support.
- Offer more complex discussion prompts or role-playing scenarios for advanced learners.

7. Feedback and Reflection:

 Objective: Provide constructive feedback, reinforce learning, and encourage self-


reflection.
 Activity:
a. Allow students to share their conversations, presentations, or visual representations with
the class.
b. Provide positive feedback on effective language use and offer constructive suggestions
for improvement.
c. Facilitate a class discussion on what went well, challenges faced, and strategies for
improvement.
 Teacher's Role: Guide the discussion, highlight successful communication, and
encourage a supportive learning environment.
