LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS

GRADE: 3 QUARTER: 4 WEEK: 1 DAY: 1

COMPETENCY & The learner visualizes, represents, and converts time measure
OBJECTIVES :  Visualizes, represents, and converts time measure from
seconds to minutes, minutes to hours and vice versa.
CONTENT : Converts Time Measure ( Seconds/Minutes/Hours)

PROCEDURE : A. Preparation

What thing tells us time?

B. Motivation
What time is it? Game Time

Why is time important?

C. Presentation
Let pupils observe a clock.
Ask: What are the parts of the clock?
How many hands does a clock have? Let them identify the names
of the different hands of a clock.
D.Discussion/Abstraction

Ask which is the hour hand, minute hand, second hand?

What does each hand tell us. Let pupils observe the second and

The minute hand move. (As much as possible, each group of

should have a real clock. Which hand moves faster, second hand or

minute hand?
Guide the pupils in counting the number of ticks the
second hand moves before the minute hand moves. Ask How
many seconds are there in one minute. If t h r e e m i n u t e s h a v e
p a s s e d , h o w m a n y s e c o n d s i s that?
Let pupils observe the minute and hour hands move.
When a second hand moves in 1 complete revolution it is equal to
60 seconds.

Discuss the time measures:

 Hour
 Minute
 Second

Let pupils study the time conversions.

1 day = 24 hours
1 hour = 60 minutes
1 minute = 60 seconds

Remember: To convert smaller time measure to larger time measures we

will use division.
Example:
180 seconds = _______ minutes
Since, 1 minute is equal to 60 seconds, then, we divide 180 by 60 and the
answer is 3.
Therefore : 180 seconds = 3 minutes

Remember: To convert larger time mesures to smaller time measures, we

use multiplication.
Example:
5 days = _______ hours
Since, 1 day is equal to 24 hours, then we multiply 5 by 24 and the
answer is 120.
Therefore: 5 days = 120 hours
Another examples:
2 hours = 120 minutes (2 x 60 = 120)
2 minutes = 120 seconds (2 x 60 =120)
120 minutes = 2 hours (120 ÷ 60= 2)
180 seconds = 3 minutes (180 ÷ 60= 3)
E. Exercises
Board work
_____ days = 240 hours
600 seconds = _____ minutes
7 hours =______ minutes
F. Generalization
Remember: To convert larger time mesures to smaller time measures, we
use multiplication.

Remember: To convert smaller time measure to larger time measures we

will use division.

1 day = 24 hours
1 hour = 60 minutes
1 minute = 60 seconds
G. Application
Let them do this by pair.
10 days = _______ hours
6 minutes =_______ seconds
7 hours =_______ minutes

H. Evaluation
Match the time conversions in Column A with Column B
A B
1. 4 days a. 4 minutes
2. 240 second b. 96 hours
3. 120 hours c. 600 seconds
4. 10 minutes d. 5 days
I. Agreement/Assignment
Convert to the following time measures.
1) 600 seconds =______ minutes
2) _____seconds = 5 minutes
3) 6 hours =______minutes
4) 2 days =______ hours

Review: Lets complete the table below.

Time Measure
1 day _____ hours
1 hour _____minutes
1 minute _____ seconds

If there are 120 minutes, how many hours are there?

If there are 5 minutes, how many seconds are there?
I. Motivation
How many hours do you sleep at night?
How many hours do you spend in school?
Look at the picture.

How many hours is 1 day?

J. Presentation
This morning, we will learn about converting hours to days and vice versa.

K. Discussion/Abstraction
How many hours are there in 1 day?
1 day = 24 hours
The 12-hour system divides the 24 hours of a day into two periods lasting 12
hours each. The first 12-hour period is designated as am. It runs from
midnight to noon. The second period, marked pm, covers the 12 hours from
noon to midnight.

The abbreviations am and pm derive from Latin:

 AM = Ante meridiem: Before noon

 PM = Post meridiem: After noon

Remember: To convert larger time mesures to smaller time measures, we

use multiplication.
Example :
2 days= __48___ hours ( 2 x 24 = 48 )
10 days= __240__ hours ( 10 x 24 = 240 )
Remember: To convert larder smaller time measures to larger one, we use
division.
Example:
72 hours = 3 days ( 72 / 24 = 3 )
240 hours = __10__ days ( 240 / 24 = 10 )

L. Exercises
Board work:
_____ days = 240 hours
