1. Some elements of group II of the periodic table are Be, Mg, Ca and Ba
(a) Write electronic configurations for the elements (4m)
(b) Explain how the following factors vary within these elements
(i) First ionisation energy
(ii) Electropositivity
(iii) Atomic radius (9m)

(c) Name a reagent that can be used to distinguish between the following pairs of
lens. In each case, state what is observed if each ion is separately treated
with the reagent.
(i) Zn2+ and Pb2+
(ii) Cl – and SO42 – (7m)

2. The table below gives the first four ionisation energies for four elements in the
same short period in kJmol – 1

analysis and has to be standardised
(a) (i) What is meant by the term primary standard (3m)
(ii) State three characteristics of a primary standard (3m)
(iii) Explain why potassium manganate (VII) is not a primary standard (4m)
