The document discusses a research proposal that aims to clarify the impact of social media use on students' academic performance. It will survey 50 students to understand their social media habits and perceptions of how social media affects collaboration, knowledge sharing, study time, and academic performance. The literature review discusses previous findings that link higher social media use to lower GPAs and issues like poor writing and late assignments.

Group members: 04

Word count: …………… words

1.INTRODUCTION
1.1. Rationale
The development of social media has had a great influence on the
lives of the entire society in recent years, especially the young
generation all over the world. Besides the many benefits that social
media bring to users: fast and continuously updated information, many
other entertainment utilities, the ability to connect people... In the era
of "The World is Flat" (Friedman, 2005), no one can deny the benefits of
social media. However, many students are spending a significant
amount of time on social media, which negatively affects student
learning. Therefore, more research is needed on the impact of social
media on student learning.

1.2. Aims and objectives

1.2.1 Aims
Clarifying the impact of using social media on students' learning today
to provide some solutions to help improve the effectiveness of social
media use.

1.2.2 Objectives
Describe the current status of students' use of social networks (purpose
of use, duration of use, time of use, frequency of use...)
Draw some suggestions and recommendations to help promote
positive effects and limit negative effects of using social networks on
student learning.

1.3. Research questions

-Positive influences:
· How does social media help students connect with classmates,
teachers, and other educational communities?
· Can social media platforms be used to create collaborative learning
environments and promote knowledge sharing among students?
-Negative influences:
· How does excessive social media use impact students' academic
performance and study habits?
· Can social media use contribute to feelings of anxiety, depression,
and social isolation among students?
2.LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1. Theoretical background

Social media can be defined in various ways, depending on the
context and perspective. According to Junco al et (2010), social media
are a gaggle of internet websites, services, and practices that support
collaboration, community building, participation, and sharing”. Social
media refers to online platforms and digital channels where users can
create, share, and exchange content, ideas, and information. These
platforms enable users to connect with others, build networks,
communicate, share content, and interact in various ways. Social media
serves as communication tools, content sharing platforms, networking
spaces, and channels for information dissemination. It also facilitates
marketing, branding, community building, and data analysis. Overall,
social media forms a technological ecosystem that fosters connectivity,
engagement, and interaction among individuals and communities in
virtual spaces.
Due to the increased popularity of it, economists and professors are
questioning whether grades of scholars aren't being suffering from
what proportion time is spend on these sites (Choney, 2010).

2.2. Literature review

Over the years many studies have shown that social media has
several negative effects on the academic performance of the students.
According to Khan (2009), facebook users often time experience poor
performance academically. Furthermore, Paul, Baker and Cochran
(2012) suggested that a negative relationship exists between time spent
by students on social networking sites and their academic
performance.

All the same, Mingle and Adams (2015) asserted that majority of
respondents experienced negative effects i.e. poor grammar and
spelling, late submission of assignment, less study time and poor
academic performance because of too much use of social media
networks. Moreover, addiction toward using social media among
students was high. Eke, Omekwu and Odoh (2014) described some
dangers associated with social networking sites such as Ecrime, Internet
addiction, laziness, standard crime like, fraud, murder, kidnapping;
immoral act like, pornography, prostitution, cyber-bullying where
identified.

Moreover, Heffner and Tara (2016) conducted a study among

undergraduates at Rowan University of the USA. The study results
described that social media do not have a positive effect on the
students' academic achievements. Because the student GPA decreased
as much as they were engaged in social media. The study suggested the
undergraduate students should manage and monitor their time spent
using social media such as Facebook. In another study, Mushtaq (2015)
discovered social media as a factor in the lacking of habits of reading
newspaper among students and it may cause them to lose much
advantageous information consist of the newspaper.
Further research is needed to explore effective strategies to address
these challenges and foster a healthy relationship between social media
and academic success.

3.RESEARCH DESIGN
3.1. Sample and Sampling technique
The participants will be selected by random sampling, especially
this will be simple random sampling. According to (Thompson, 2012),
simple random sampling is a sampling design in which k distinct items
are selected from the n items in the population in such a way
that every possible combination of k items is equally likely to be the
sample
selected. The researcher will need to make a list of from a population of
the
second- year students at UFLS by name, then number them in the list.
The
next step, we will use the random method which is to use the random
function
of the computer to select the population into 50 samples.

3.2 Instruments
To achieve the goals of the study, we will use one instrument in the
study: a questionnaire. Students will be asked to report on their
understanding of the impact of social media on academic
performance.The questionnaire for
this study will contain four parts. Regarding the type of questions, we
will use closed-ended questions. The questionnaire will have 10
questions that will be included in likert scales, semantic differential
scales, multiple-choice items. The first part will be related to general
background information about idioms which will include 2 questions.

The second part will be answered for the first research question that
will
have 3 questions. The third part will be used to answer the second
research question consisting of 3 questions. The final part will be
related to the third research question which will consist of 2 questions.
Especially, the researcher will promise that the participants in this study
are voluntary and all their information will be kept confidential and
used for the only purpose of research.

3.3 Provisional procedure of data collection

The questionnaire was examined. The whole questionnaire was
distributed to
50 education students at the University of the Foreign Language
Studies-The
University of Danang who were not part of the study's participants.
They are
asked to assess the comprehension level and consistency of questions
in the
questionnaire and give feedback. As a result, the group will ensure the
relevance
of the questionnaire and measure what it is supposed to aim at.
