Task 1: Identifying, Measuring and Recording the Physical

Attributes
The objective of this exercise is to accurately identify, measure, and record the physical
dimensions of a candidate Cisco TelePresence room.

Activity Procedure
Complete these steps:
Step 1 Obtain any applicable floor plans and dimensions (verify that they are accurate and
up to date).

Step 2 Complete the first section of the RRA Worksheet by recording the customer and
contractor information in the appropriate fields of the form. Ask your instructor for
further information to record.

Step 3 Record the type of building (number of floors) in which the candidate room resides.

Step 4 Record the location of the candidate room.

Step 5 Begin recording the physical dimensions of the room. If you have obtained accurate
floor plans and dimensions containing the required measurements of this section,
simply record the information directly from the floor plans to the RRA Worksheet,
converting from inches to meters, as appropriate. Otherwise, continue the following
steps applicable to all information not available on the floor plans.

Example: Wall 1 measures 203 inches: 203 x .0254 = 5.16 meters (round to two
decimal places)

Step 6 Measure and record the length and height of the longest wall in the room (Wall 1).
This is the wall behind the Cisco TelePresence System 3000 display.

Step 7 Measure and record the length and height of the wall opposite Wall 1 (Wall 3). This
is the wall behind the participants.

process described in Steps 25 through 27.

Step 28 After successfully completing the measurement, record the Leq figure from the
SOUND meter on the RRA Worksheet for the appropriate register number.

Step 29 Repeat Steps 25 through 28 until average AUDIO readings have been measured and
recorded on the RRA worksheet for all HVAC registers.

Activity Verification
You have completed this task when you attain this result:
 You have measured and recorded accurate noise readings at a 1-meter distance from all
HVAC registers in the candidate Cisco TelePresence room.

Task 2: Measure and Record Ambient Audio Noise

Accurately measure the ambient SPL noise in all six zones of the candidate Cisco TelePresence
room.

Activity Procedure
Complete these steps:

Step 1 Divide the candidate Cisco TelePresence room floor plan into 6 equal sized zones.
You might want to simply modify a copy of the floor plan or a saved Visio
document.

Step 2 Divide the length of the candidate room (Wall 1 or 3) by 3. This will be the width of
one zone. Write the result here ____________.

Step 3 Divide the width of the candidate room (Wall 2 or 4) by 2. This will be the length of
one zone. Write the result here ____________.
Step 4 The dimensions of one rectangular zone are the length from Step 2 by the width
from Step 3. Thus, one zone will be __________ by __________.

Step 5 Now, record the borders of the rectangular zones on the floor plan or Visio drawing.
Simply inscribe six adjacent rectangles bearing the dimensions recorded in Step 4.

100 Implementing Cisco TelePresence Solutions (ITS) v1.1 © 2011 Cisco Systems, Inc.
Step 6 Starting in the upper left hand corner of your drawing (with the Wall 1 at the top and
Wall 2 on the right side), number these zones 1 through 6, in ascending order from
left to right, top to bottom. See this figure for an example.

Step 7 Starting with Zone 1, use a tape measure to position the microphone 1.2 meters (120
cm) above the floor at the center point of the zone.
Step 8 Measure the average ambient AUDIO noise over a 30-second interval and record the
measurement on the RRA Worksheet.

Step 9 Repeat Steps 7 and 8 for the remaining 5 zones.

Step 10 Return to Zone 5 for a C-Weighted ambient AUDIO noise measurement.

Step 11 Use the cursor to highlight the third field from the left on the menu bar, and then
press the Enter key.
Step 12 Use the cursor to choose the C-WTD option in the drop-down menu. Press the

Step 26 Keep your eyes on the Small Result field displaying the MAX SPL.

Step 27 If at any point the MAX SPL field exceeds 45 dB, stop scanning and record the
noise source and location in the candidate room on the RRA Worksheet.
Step 28 Repeat Steps 23 through 26 until you have identified and recorded all noise sources
that are louder than 45 dB.

Step 29 Calculate the mathematical average (mean) overall noise floor from the six zones.
The average (mean) is computed by dividing the sum of the recorded values of all
six zones by 6. This result is the Average Overall Noise Floor.

Step 30 Average = (zone1 + zone2 + zone3 + zone4 + zone5 + zone6) ÷ 6 = result

Step 31 Average = (_____ + _____ + _____ + _____ + _____ + _____) ÷ 6

Step 32 Average = (_____) ÷ 6 = ______ = Average Overall Noise Floor

Step 33 Record this Average Overall Noise Floor on the RRA Worksheet.

Activity Verification
You have completed this task when you attain these results:
 You have recorded all ambient AUDIO noise readings and the Average Overall Noise
Floor on the RRA Worksheet.
 You have identified and recorded any noise trouble spots that measure more than 45 dB of
sound pressure at a distance of 1 meter.

Task 3: Measure and Record Reverberation Time (RT60)

Accurately measure the reverberation time (RT60) characteristics of the candidate room.

Activity Procedure
Complete these steps:

Note Although hearing protection is not mandatory, you should consider wearing it during the
parts of this test that involve generating pink noise.

© 2011 Cisco Systems, Inc. Lab Guide 103

Note If the ambient SPL is greater than 42 dBA, generating adequate pink noise to accurately test
for reverberation characteristics might not be possible. Ensure that HVAC and any other
devices that introduce noise into the room are disabled for the duration of the test.

Step 1 Position the Fostex 6301D on a table in the candidate room so that it is pointing into
a corner of the room (make sure that it does not point toward the microphone when
taking measurements).

Step 2 Set up and power on the Fostex 6301D Digital Personal Monitor and AL1
Acoustilyzer.

Step 3 Turn the volume knob of the Fostex 6301D to its lowest setting.

Step 4 Put the NTI Acoustilyzer Audio Test Signals v1.0 CD into a CD player and connect
to the Analog Input of the Fostex 6301D via a 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch audio cable.

If using the NTI Minirator MR1, connect to the Analog Input of the Fostex 6301D
via the RCA to 1/4-inch audio cable.)

Note Do not connect the MR1 to the digital input of the Fostex 6301D.

Step 5 Prepare the AL1 for reverberation measurements.

Step 8 Choose the graph option in the drop-down menu, and then press the Enter key.

Step 9 If you have a tripod available, mount the AL1 on it with the Microphone stand
adapter 1.2 meters from the floor. Place the AL1 in the center of the candidate room.

Step 10 If you do not have a tripod available, you will need to hold the AL1 and
Microphone, as steadily as you can, 1.2 meters from the floor and in the center of the
room throughout the measuring process.

Note If no tripod is available, work with a partner to obtain accurate readings.

Note Make sure that you stay quiet for the remainder of the exercise because any unexpected
noise can interfere with the calibrations and measurements. Turn off the HVAC and any
equipment that is producing noise. The goal is not to test ambient noise but to check for
reverberation.

Step 11 Use the cursor to choose the RANGE field on the left side of the screen, and then
press the Enter key.

© 2011 Cisco Systems, Inc. Lab Guide 105

Step 12 The SET RANGE dialog box should appear. Use the cursor to click OK, and press
the Enter key.

Step 13 Use the cursor to choose the Play field, and press the Enter key.

Step 14 Verify that the STAT field reads “ARMED.”

Step 15 Put on any hearing protection you desire now.

Note It may not be possible to generate pink noise at a high enough Db/SPL to perform a
successful test. Alternately, each frequency 4 kHz through 125 Hz, can be tested individually
with a greater chance of success.

Step 16 If you are using the NTI Minirator MR1, make sure that it is currently in “P.Noise”
mode.
Step 17 If you are using the NTI Acoustilyzer Audio Test Signals v1.0 CD, skip to Step 21.

106 Implementing Cisco TelePresence Solutions (ITS) v1.1 © 2011 Cisco Systems, Inc.
Step 18 Use the Mode button to highlight the “signal” field (the “s” will flash when it is
properly selected.)

Step 19 Use the cursor keys to choose P.Noise from the signal options.

Step 20 Use the Mode button to highlight the Amplification field (the “A” will be flashing
when it is properly selected.)

Step 21 Adjust the level to “-10dBu.”

Step 22 If using the NTI Acoustilyzer Audio Test Signals v1.0 CD, begin playing track 15
“RT60: Pink Noise, on/off 10s/10s, 32x” on the CD.

Slowly increase the volume control on the FOSTEX 6301D until all bars on the AL1
display extend past the indicator marks.

Step 23 Once you pass these marks, sustain the pink noise for five or more seconds.
Step 24 Stop playback on CD player or if using the NTI Minirator MR1 unplug the RCA
connector.

© 2011 Cisco Systems, Inc. Lab Guide 107

Step 25 Verify that check marks appear in the RANGE column and that the AVRG field
value has increased by 1. If this did not happen, check your settings and try again.

Step 26 Repeat this test at least two times to obtain an accurate average.

Step 27 Use the cursor to choose the display field in the menu bar (second from left), and
then press the Enter key.

Step 28 Use the cursor to choose the seconds view, and then press Enter.

Step 29 Record the times displayed in the “Pass 1” fields of the RRA Worksheet.

Note You might not get a reading for 125 Hz under some conditions.

Step 30 Reposition the FOSTEX 6301D to another location.

Step 31 Repeat this test for the new speaker location.

Activity Verification
You have completed this task when you attain this result:
 You have measured and recorded reverberation characteristics of the candidate room for
two separate locations of the speaker.

108 Implementing Cisco TelePresence Solutions (ITS) v1.1 © 2011 Cisco Systems, Inc.
Task 4: Measure and Record Room Illumination
Accurately measure the illumination characteristics in all nine zones of the candidate Cisco
TelePresence room.

Activity Procedure
Complete these steps:

Step 1 Identify the types of fixtures used for lighting:_________________________
