DRRR - PETA 1:
Preventing Dis-HOUSE-ter: Designing a Hazard-Proof House

I. Introduction

A 2-dimensional floor plan is a scaled diagram or drawing showing the layout of a room, a home, or a building
viewed from above. It may show an entire house or building or a single room. A floor plan may also illustrate the
location and size of walls, windows, doors, and stairs, as well as fixed installations such as bathroom fixtures, kitchen
cabinetry, and appliances. It is also critical for creating furniture layouts so that you know what items will fit and
which won’t. This will save you time and effort when moving or setting up a new home or office space, and it can
help you to avoid making expensive mistakes. A floor plan includes outdoor spaces like a garden, patio, garage, etc.
On the other hand, 3-dimensional modeling is an expansion of the 2D floor plans. They are created using 3D
modeling software such as AutoCAD, SketchUP, Floorplanner, and various others. It can also be created using
materials such as foam, cardboard, wood, and other materials that can represent the proposed house design in scale.
It helps engineers and architects to clearly understand the conditions of their design, like spatial qualities, aesthetics
of the design, and how the structure fits into the site. It can also be used during presentations to communicate
design ideas.
Given that the Philippines is prone to many hazards, designing a floor plan with features that protect the soon-
to-be occupants is a must. Thus, the challenge of this task is to exhibit the Disaster Risk Reduction Management
(DRRM) Plan of the Filipino community by proposing feasible floorplans that would be appropriate for the living
conditions in the Philippines. As DRRM experts, you will create a floor plan and a 3D model of a house that is not
only naturally hazard-resistant but also safe for people to live in. Using today’s advanced technology and software,
use your creativity and out-of-this-world ideas to create your floor plan.
Your team will be showcasing in person the hazard-proof design in 2D and 3D of your proposed house while
incorporating the key concepts that you have learned in DRRR. The style and flow of the presentation would
depend on the decision of the team. Examples of these are (but are not limited to) brief infomercials, sales pitches,
or business meetings. Your team is also allowed to display the aesthetic characteristics of your floorplan design,
which would make your proposed house more pleasing to live in. If needed, citations of sources should be included
in your presentation.

STANDARDS FOR SUCCESS: The 2-dimensional floor plan and 3-dimensional model of your team will be
evaluated based on different categories. (see rubrics)

II. Learning Objectives:

After this activity, you should be able to:
1. Design and create a 2D floorplan and an interactive floorplan (3D-animated) of a house that is hazard-
resistant and safe using modeling software.
2. Create a 3-dimensional model of a hazard-proof house.
3. Explain the importance of floorplan designs in making a house ideal for real-life situations in the Philippines.
4. Leverage the DRRM resilience plan of the Filipino community by proposing feasible housing designs.

IV. Procedures:
1. Decide as a group about the location of your house. Give specific details: Town/Municipality, Province, and
Region.
2. List down all the possible hazards that your location can be prone to. Fire and Typhoon hazards must be
included.
3. Using your chosen apps, create a floor plan according to your group’s preferences. The design of your floorplan
must have features that will protect you and your family from the hazards present in your location.

Difference between 2D and 3D

2-dimensional floor plan 3-dimensional floor plan

4. The floorplan should be limited to 1 floor only but may include a basement and/or a rooftop.
5. Your floor plan must include the following:
• Important furniture and appliances
• Outdoor space (garden, patio, garage, swimming pool, etc.)
• Labels for the 2D floor plan (parts of the house and important features)

6. Floor plan blueprint submission will be on February 12-16, 2024.

7. The blueprint needs to be translated into a 3-dimensional model. The maximum lot area where the model will
be placed is 50 cm x 50 cm. The height of the model should not exceed 25 cm in height.

Final outputs:
Printed blueprint house and floor plan (A4-sized copy paper/s) and 3-dimensional model

Deadline for submission: February 26- March 1, 2024.
