Types of Charts

The document provides information on different types of charts and how to describe the data and key features in a chart. It discusses column/bar charts, pie charts, population pyramids, spider charts, line graphs, doughnut charts, and scatter charts. It provides guidance on introducing the chart topic and data source, identifying the x and y axes variables, and describing patterns and trends using descriptive verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.

Types of Charts

and How to
Describe The
Information
from It
What type of charts do you
usually encounter or know?
Types of Charts
Do you know what is the name of this chart?

Column or Bar Chart

How about this? What is the name of this chart?

Pie Chart
Population
Pyramids
Spider Chart
Line Graph
Doughnut Chart
Scatter Charts
So, how we describe the information
from the diagram that we have?
1. Introduce the Chart/Graph
Your first step should be to present the graph to your audience by covering high-level information
like:
1) Its title or topic
Example:
- This diagram is a visual representation of the wheel speed conversion chart
- This line graph describes the fluctuation sales on the automatic car

2) Data source
Example:
- This chart uses data from the Z Database
- The data of the graph is compiled from survey

3) Time frame
Example:
- from 2017 until 2021
- between January to September
- in the second quarter of 2023
2. Identify Key Features

From there, you can describe the key variables that make up the graph. Graphs and charts typically have an x-
and y-axis, which represent different variables. Describing these axes will help the audience understand how
the graph displays data.

Here are some helpful phrases for identifying these variables:

• The vertical axis shows…
• The horizontal axis represents…
• This curve illustrates…
• The solid line shows…
• The shaded area describes…
• This colored segment is for…
• The red bar…
3. Interpret the Diagram

When you use a graph or chart, try to describe the movement of the line by recognizing the main patterns,
trends, or relationships they show. Use these several words to describe the movement.

•Verbs: rise, increase, grow, go up to, climb, boom, peak, fall, decline, decrease, drop, dip, go down, reduce,
level up, remain stable, no change, remain steady, stay constant, stay, maintain the same level, crash, collapse
.
•Adjectives: sharp, rapid, huge, dramatic, substantial, considerable, significant, slight, small, minimal, massive.

•Adverbs: dramatically, rapidly, hugely, massive, sharply, steeply, considerably, substantially, significantly,
slightly, minimally, markedly, quickly, swiftly, suddenly, steadily, gradually, slowly.
