Tsunami Survivor
On 11 March, 2011, a big earthquake hit Japan and shook the ground for 6 minutes. Buildings and bridges fell down, but
no one believed another terrible event to follow after what happened. The earthquake sent high waves of water from the sea
to the coast of Tōhoku – it was a tsunami. Hashimoto is one of the survivors. Here is what he wrote in his journal about
that day…
I was on my way home when I felt the ground shaking. The earthquake lasted about 6 minutes, and luckily I wasn’t injured
and was still very far from home. Soon after, I saw a huge wave coming right towards the coast. It was moving so quickly!
I started running up the mountain and felt very frightened and nervous. The tsunami was up to 40 metres high! A few hours
later, the natural disaster stopped. I was relieved to be alive but I couldn’t believe what I saw. Water covered the whole
town! It was a terrible tragedy.
