02. IMPORT
SOLUTIONS
Import documentary collections

A documentary collection (D/C) is a transaction

whereby the exporter entrusts the collection of
payment to the exporter’s bank (remitting bank),
which sends documents to the importer’s bank
(collecting bank), along with instructions for
payment.
Import documentary collections

HSBC offers two common documentary

collection methods. They include:
Documents against Payment (D/P)
Documents against Acceptance (D/A)
Benefits

A cost-effective and secure way to trade

internationally

Documentary Collection against Acceptance

(D/A) enables you to receive goods before
payment

Eliminates the need for credit facilities if no bank

finance is required on payment
Benefits

A simpler alternative to Documentary Credits (DCs)

Manages payment risk for your supplier at

minimal cost to you

Gives you access to goods without delay

Suppliers are paid as soon as your account is

debited with no hidden interest or payment
delays
Shipping guarantees

Shipping Guarantees (SGs) are issued to

enable our customers (buyers) to obtain
release of goods from the carrier
without the submission of the original
Bills of Lading

Enables you to take possession of goods without the

Avoids unnecessary delays and missed business
opportunities

You don't have to pay storage fees or

demurrage charges

Credits (DCs) and Documentary Collections

accept quick payment terms
Import documentary credits
(letters of credit)

A documentary credit (DC), which is also

often referred to as a Letter of Credit (LC)
benefits both sellers and buyers.
For sellers
DCs guarantee that payment for goods or services will
be made by a bank, on behalf of the buyer, upon
presentation of commercial documents that are
compliant with the terms and conditions of the DC

For buyers
DCs give confidence that imported goods will be as
specified and delivered at the agreed time and
place, and that payment will only be made by the
bank after shipment, and against compliant
documents in line with the DC terms
How DCs work

Payment terms are at sight or usance

The seller presents commercial documents to the DC
issuing bank
Payment to the seller is assured by the DC issuing bank
upon confirmation that documents are compliant
The DC issuing bank then releases the documents to
the buyer
How DCs work

The buyer has an obligation to make the payment

against the DC, to the DC issuing bank
HSBC handles DCs in accordance with the Uniform
Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits (UCP
600), a set of international standards for the handling of
Documentary Credits through financial institutions.
These rules are published by the International Chamber
of Commerce (ICC)
BENEFITS FOR IMPORTERS

Security around payments which are only made upon

presentation of compliant documents providing evidence
that the DC terms are met
Negotiate better terms: a DC issued by HSBC provides
suppliers with payment assurance, giving buyers extra
leverage to negotiate better pricing or payment terms
BENEFITS FOR IMPORTERS

Improved cash flow: Using DCs instead of deposits and/or

advance payments can help accelerate cash flows
New market opportunities: DCs can help buyers minimize
the risks of working with new suppliers in new territories
as payment is only made once all terms and conditions are
met
Greater control: DCs give buyers greater control over the
details of a transaction by stipulating certain conditions
Export documentary collections
HSBC’s Export Documentary Collection Solution is a simple, cost-
effective and secure means of trading internationally – reducing the risk
of non-payment by your buyer while giving you the ability to maintain
control over commercial documents.
Product features
Documents and payment processing
under international rules.

Documents handled via banks.

Benefits

Control title to goods and payment terms

Negotiate better terms and prices

Work with a trusted partner in new markets.

Export documentary
credits

To help you expand to new markets with greater

confidence, HSBC also offers an array of trade
finance solutions that support our DCs. With an
Export DC Confirmation, we add a conditional
undertaking to any export DC to pay you upon
presentation of compliant documents even if
your buyer cannot.
Documentary Collection versus DC
While a collection can provide more protection when compared to trading under
open account terms, it can involve more risk than a DC transaction.
However, collection:
• Your bank and your buyer’s bank do not guarantee payment.
• Only reputable transport companies should be used for shipment of goods.
TRADE FINANCE - EXPORT LETTERS
OF CREDIT APIS
HSBC’s Export Letters of Credit enables clients (sellers) to
seamlessly enquire about the latest status of one or more
Documentary Credits (DC). Additionally, clients can check
the details such as outstanding amount, related bills,
presentation status and payment due date in real-time.
