Lesson
Planting and Propagating Tress
1 and Fruit-Bearing Trees

Let Us Study

Planting fruit trees can contribute much not only to the economy of our
country, but also to people’s health. Eating fresh fruits is important for everybody.
Vitamins and minerals that we get from this food group are necessary for our health.
This lesson will discuss the importance of planting and propagating trees and fruit-
bearing trees.

Planting and propagating trees and fruit –bearing trees is a source of livelihood
for many Filipino families. Nowadays, many people considered this as a source of
additional income for their daily needs. Fruit –bearing trees can be planted in your
backyard depending on several factors: the space in your backyard, the kind of soil,
and the type of climate in your own community.

Trees are important to the family as well as community for the products and
amenities they give such as food like fruits, vegetables, nuts and sugar. Woods are
used as fuel for cooking and heating. Trees provide construction materials which
include lumber, plywood and board; fiber for the production of paper and pulp; and
chemicals like resin, rubber and turpentine.

Trees, like animals, are part of our ecosystem. They help maintain what we
call an ecological balance. What is ecological balance? One example is this: Trees
give off oxygen and take in carbon dioxide, while man gives off carbon dioxide and
takes in oxygen. Here, you see a give and take relationship between tree and man.
Nothing goes to waste. Another example: waste of animals and plants like carabao
manure, chicken dung, and dead leaves and twigs mix with the soil to decompose
and become compost or organic fertilizer. This organic fertilizer sustains the plants
and trees with nutrients which they need to grow, to bear fruits, and to provide food
for man. Ecological balance allows every living in nature to survive for as long as we
take care of each other.

Why is there a need for plant propagation?

Plant propagation is the process of reproducing or creating a new plant or
seedling. It is an important part of gardening, whether outdoors or indoors. Plants
are living things that grow either through their roots, stems and leaves of their
flowers, fruits, and seeds. It is a method of growing new plants from seed or from
parts of existing plants.

5
Elements/ Factors to be Observed in Planting Trees and
Fruit-bearing Trees
The following are the elements/ factors to be observed when planting trees:

1. Find the best place for planting.

Trees and fruit trees need more space for growth than ornamental plants or
crops so that trees and fruit trees can grow tall and wide. There are trees that have
roots that may expand sideward and downward. Find a place where trees can grow
freely without obstruction and enough space allowance between trees and streets,
fences, or walls. The type of soil should be suitable and the amount of sunlight
should be considered, too.

2. Select the seeds that best suit the season and the soil.

Seeds must come from a good quality mother and are healthy, mature with no
damage or cuts, and of the right size and form. It must be ready before planting.
Preferably, planting should be done during the rainy season. Find a soil that can be
suited to the type of seeds to be planted.

3. Add sufficient fertilizers in the soil.

Before planting, make sure soil is ready. Clean its surrounding area and mix
with organic fertilizers. The organic fertilizers are safer and economical to use than
inorganic or commercial fertilizers because overuse can poison the soil. Remember,
plants need nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to grow healthy and make them
resistant to pests and diseases.

4. Always take care of the soil and the plants.

In caring the young trees, the grass and weeds around them must be removed
so they do not compete in getting the nutrients from the soil. During dry seasons,
regular watering is needed. When watering the plants, it must be done during
sunrise or after sunset to keep evaporation of water from the soil.

Market Demands for Fruits

Planting fruit trees is a profitable business if one puts full attention, and
technically knowledgeable and skilled in planting and need to be hardworking and
determined. Many people realized the importance of fruits in the diet, its demand in
the local and international market continues to be high. People across ages are
becoming more and more health conscious. They realized that good nutrition is
important in promoting good health. Fruits are rich in vitamins and minerals as well
as fiber. Many Filipinos and people across the world make it a part of their daily
intake that made the demand for fruits in the market remains high.
